Hi, friend of the channel here. Do you think reckless is a better choice than Upstart? I've been playing mermails waiting for my upstarts to get in the mail and I've been forced to play reckless's and they have been playing well but I'm just wondering your thoughts?
I look at reckless as maining maxx c, turn one going first its a dead card. It doesnt advance your gamestate or put you in a better position, it's a card you have to wait to get any value out of it. This is especially true for reckless but maxx "c" is a good comparison. When I built my mermail deck one thing I focused most on was the ability to out pace my opponent. Because mermail relies on 2 sometimes 3 card interactions I wanted to keep a good flow of cards coming until I was ready to make my big push, using things like tidal and gorz to fall back on. In order to maintain this constant flow of cards I only wanted to play spells and traps that either advanced my game state or I needed to get around obsticles. The only way I was able to beat 3 shaddoll players was because every card in my deck was either a neccessary combo piece or gave me instant value (with the exception of gorz which gave me value to fall back on). Upstart allowed me to see cards early and move through my deck practically for free but with reckless you have to wait, it limits the number of things you can do turn one or if you're top decking or just low on cards in general. Reckless works in decks that have other means of drawing like spellbooks, darkworlds, etc, but locking yourself out of your own deck is a huge risk for a card you have to wait to use. So yes I think upstarts are much better than reckless in mermails. Hope this explanation helps
But what about the good points of reckless greed? opening multiples just puts you in such a leading position that your oponent most of the times won't have a good reaction to it, and with mermail you don't really need to wait until you see multiples because the deck can hold those 2 turns Though when you are running reckless your deck build must be different from this one (good bye salvage and welcome abyssturge)
Law Sanchez Monge You have to think about it in the long term though, every time you play 1 reckless greed you go -1, if you activate 2 at once you break even, it isn't until you flip three in one turn that It actually nets you a +1. Assuming that it isn't unrealistic to have two at once Obviously 4 cards now could be better than two cards over the next two turns, but if those four cards don't win you the game then you most likely have just lost it for yourself. Whether you win or lose off of the reckless, it is largely based upon luck and in a competitive scene you should try to limit the amount of luck that you depend on as much as you can. Upstart is a very safe card to run because you aren't actually chancing anything, you are instead giving your opponent a potential 3,000 life point handicap so that you can run 37 cards.
i was there he helped me alot with my mermail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ThankYou

Eric Wigginton Thanks that's actually really helpful advice on it. Would you play gorz this format still?
