#82 Planting Christmas Trees: Soil Prep & Planting [plus

- We had to plant more Christmas tree seedlings because we had heavy losses among our fir trees this past summer due to the drought.
The christmas trees planted today are 2-0 greenhouse plugs including 100/each of Norway Spruce, Concolor Fir, and Canaan Fir trees.
With this planting, we're trying several different tactics in hopes that we'll have better survival rates with this batch of tree seedlings:
1) We're using a subsoiler to dig deeper into the soil and to break up the hard clay that's just under the top soil.
2) The tree seedlings are dipped in planting gel which helps with moisture retention and also give nutrients to helps the roots grow
3) Fertilizer tablets are put in the ground near the seedling with hopes they'll feed the trees for the next 18-24 months.
4) For this planting, we're trying greenhouse plugs, which retain their soil from the greenhouse. We hope this helps with higher survival rates. Time will tell!
We're also impressed and pleased with the #teamtrees effort in response to MrBeast reaching 20 million subscribers. We encourage you to go to teamtrees.org/ and consider donating to help plant 20 million trees all over the world by 2020.

It’s nice now that you have enough ground clearance to drive over the trees that are still alive. That’ll be a pain once they get bigger. Hopefully you don’t lose anymore trees and don’t have to worry about it filling in gaps. Great video! Thanks for sharinf
That'll be when we need to invest in an auger. I don't have one for the 3point, but that might still fit in there. If not, will definitely get a handheld gas powered one.
I really like the message. I love growing trees.
Good stuff Phil. Enjoyed it.
Thanks Hank.
Such a well documented activity, warm attitude and a lovely setting! I really enjoyed how you pointed out differences between the species. Also I enjoyed how you described the activities you did while doing them, i find that very educational.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Have you tried planting a good cover crop between your rows? A good grass mix with legumes keeps Nitrogen readily available in your soil for development.
we have not. There's a lot of clover in our field already, but I wouldn't mind having more! Thanks for the comment.
I love real trees, the excitement of cutting and then the smell during the season just adds to the enjoyment of the Christmas season, thanks for sharing.
Yes. That's out favorite!
Have you noticed any difference using the gel and tablets this time compared to the previous planting?
Hard to tell. We lost so many our first year due to drought, then this year we kept up with watering through the dry spell and then we had 12 inches of rain in August and some drowned.
I need to subsoil. You confirmed a good idea I already had. Thanks Phil!
I should make the drive down sometime when your planting to see how you do it all.
Anytime! We'll be planting again last weekend of oct. The subsoilding and tilling will be done beforehand though.
@@WoodsTreeFarm ok, I'll try to make it down!
Hello guys . I enjoyed watching this and learning about Christmas tree planting. Cheers for now
Hey! thanks for watching and taking a minute to leave a comment.
Hello Phil! I’m a new friend stopping by to say hello! This is very interesting. Wow 300 seedlings. I love Christmas tree farms!
Hi! Thanks for watching
Great team work I'am sure things are going to be good for you great job .
Look at you GO!! Fun to watch the tilling in FF! Gosh...you all are just busier than ANY family we know!! Keep up the great work, and bless your hearts! Sounds like a GREAT cause!! How amazing... ATB, Lisa&Rick
Thanks Lisa & Rick! Yes, we're busy but still make time for the family commitments.
Nice job guys!
Thank you!
Hi Phil what a great job you did with that tiller. I think you have a good handle on the soil issue good luck the farm looks really good.
Thanks Russell! Onward and upward :)
Great updates and info on the Team Trees organization. We are definitely going to support that.
Rob
Excellent! Glad to hear it.
We are just ar the very beginning of doing a wee farm. What type and where did you get the fertilizer tablets?? Thanks a million.
We have used a couple brands, but they're all the same 20-10-5, 21gram (500 tablets per package), 2 year slow release tablets. There are links in my amazon store www.amazon.com/shop/woodstreefarm?listId=2TXL54WSIAU5U ... let me know if you have any other questions!
How many acres is the ranch? And can you make a video on how you maintain the kubota. How you grease it every 10 hours ?
We have 43 acres total. About 11 acres is open and the rest is wooded. DIY My Way recently posted a few videos on maintenance better than I could do. Here's the one on greasing: ruclips.net/video/NJ6m0b0QGNs/видео.html
my back hurts just watching you, great video.
best
Haha. Yeah, we hurt for half a day or so after this.
here is a mount that may help give viewers a better camera angle for detail work you can cut into videos

In the future, could you run to sub-soiler through first, then the tiller? It would just cut down one pass through with the tractor. But looks like a great day of work done! Good video!
I actually did the subsoiler first, then decided to do it again after tilling. But yes, to your point, I can absolutely do all the subsoiling first then come over with the tiller so I don't have to till twice. Thanks for your comment!
how are the trees growing this year? i'm working on doing the same but i'm having to clear land this year for hopefully planting next year.
Doing pretty good so far. We've had to water a lot to keep with it... Check more recent videos for updates ruclips.net/user/WoodsTreeFarmvideos see video 141, 144, 146, 151, 152 for example
I’m in the clearing stage as well. Looking forward to planting next year.
really enjoying your videos, I am catching up starting with 1 to the current.
I appreciate it. We're going live momentarily. Maybe you can join in and contribute to the chat?!
How'd this method work out for you? I'm planting 200 tomorrow. The tree nursery guy said to put the fertilizer tablet 6" or so away from the tree on the ground. Your way seems easier. I plan to add more tabs later, if needed. They came as a box of 1,000
you don't need the tabs with these trees. You can use liquid foliar fertilizer or granular after they're established. 1oz per foot of granular every 60-90 days March-Sept is what I do.
@@WoodsTreeFarm thank you for your response! I was surprised how quickly the planting went; about 6 hours for 190 trees by hand with a dibble bar.
Hi Phil! Greetings from Europe! I’m thinking about planting Christmas trees as well. Do you think that the subsoiler makes a big difference? (I don’t have any). Eventually do you think it’s better to use a cultivator or just to plant the trees into the soil without any preps? Thanks
Hello! and thanks for watching. The answer to your question probably depends on your soil type. Our soil has high clay content and its very compacted, so subsoiling helps loosen soil and improves drainage.
@@WoodsTreeFarm Thanks Phil. One other question here 😃 How often do you use fertilisers and what type do you use (and how do you apply them)?
Moving right along Phil, looking good!
Thanks Joe! Appreciate you watching and taking a second to comment. Take care
Made my back hurt watching you planting. Looks like a lot of work
LOL. Its not too bad - just really repetitive.
What Diehard dip are you using? Regular or the Ecto and why? Thanks
Ecto. Its says on the package it contains some kind of fungi beneficial for pine, fir, and spruce.
Great video
It looks like your tiller is doing good. If I remember correctly you got the 36" off of EBay or Craigslist, looks like you got a good buy. You mentioned being out there before sun up, have you thought about adding additional lights to the tractor? I'm contemplating that for my tractor right now, just trying to decide which way to go.
Yes! I would like to explore doing lights on the tractor, but its just not high on my list right now. I first put that tiller to use in video (link: ruclips.net/video/EumWbLGwmgk/видео.html ). It definitely gets the job done. The headlamp I've been using is pretty bright - bright enough to help with driving and working the tractor. This is it here (amazon affiliate link): amzn.to/31UKXeR
Looking good 👍
Thanks!
Awesome info and sources, Phil. I gotta ask. What is your recommended source of plugs and transplants?
I can't say I have a solid recommendation at this point. We've ordered from 3 different growers to try to figure out which do better at our farm. You'll also find big differences in tree size, consistency and shipping cost from one grower to another. We've ordered from flickingers, bosche's Countryview Nursery and Itasca greenhouse so far. No standout favorites. Itasca has the plugs, the others have bare root seedlings.
I’ve been ordering from Brooks Tree Farm for a couple of years, they have good trees. It’s been getting harder to find good wholesale nurseries that sell Douglas firs and other Christmas trees, imo.
Nice video
How wide is your tiller? Nice work!
I have a little 3ft tiller I use for the rows
You may want to consider a Meyers Spruce. It's much more heat and drought tolerant than other spruces and thrive all the way south to Zone 8. Here's some info: www.christmastrees.net/tree-seedling-favors/evergreen-descriptions/meyer-spruce-2/
We've come across those before but never ordered any. Might have to give it a shot. Thanks!
where do you get your plugs from?
We got this batch from Itasca Greenhouse.
10 Acres of weeds & Trees.... Who, what and where did you gain your knowledge and information for your practices on your farm ? You did mention an Ag agent, did you ever join your Local Christmas tree Association? It’s geared to your State and will steer your in a successful business experience. Go Organic!!!!!!! After 35 yrs growing trees I’m trying to go organic, Will see.
Hi there! Thanks for watching, and for the comment. We didn't have any prior ag experience, so we've had to learn it all on the fly. We've talked with other farmers, consumed just about every resource available from the VA and NC extension offices, joined our state assoc, and of course, over the past couple years doing videos getting others to share what they know here through comments.
Hi new friend here 🤗
