  • There are a lot of ways to introduce the stars of this evening, the Irreverent Mr. Cook and Dudley Moore, but I this this antidote will suffice. There were on a television show where the question of Princess Anne's upcoming wedding was raised. Peter nodded and said, “yes she has her official opening the same night we do, I don't know if she's been giving previews as we have.”
    Good Night America: Season 1; # 10
    Episode: Stars Of Broadway
    Air Date: August 28th, 1974

As I'm from the U.K., I've never seen the interview before.
How natural, relaxed, and affable he seems.
I'll try to learn something about him.

Genius Cook's fast wit sees irony and satire in almost every word, every moment, every glance. Would have been exhausting at times, for himself, side-kick Moore, and others around. No wonder more reliance on the bottle in later days, and who couldn't sympathise?
This was the prelude to the brilliant and outrageous Derek and Clive, out and away their supreme collaborative work.
Life would never have been nearly as good without these two. Calling it comedy an injustice, it was social comment and a lot more, even better health to laugh so much.
Glad they got out when going was good, pre-laughter control, government censorship. These days both would have been dismissed/gagged/locked up, disowned for saying things they should, but shouldn't.

Geraldo, for a brief flash in time, was actually a well respected personality.

Weird that Geraldo SO clearly got and enjoyed the humor while the audience had clearly just been lobotomized.

Not lobotomised. Either stoned....or, most likely, just cool and enjoying the show without being pumped up by a floor manager.

Several people seem to have misjudged the audience as being lacklustre. This looks to me like a low key groovy programme from 1973. Mainstream chat shows would have floor managers pumping up audience reaction but this, to me, appears to be one of those where the audience are most probably all under 30, into Pink Floyd and Monty Python, and either 'high' or cool. Same thing would happen if an underground band would play in a studio. The kids would sit crosslegged on the floor, relaxed, unforced and just enjoying it without being demonstrative in return. Frankly I miss that kind of TV. It was cool.

Awful drudgy (overdressed) interviewer plus drab audience. I like Dudley's calm intelligent manner. I feel that Pete was mainly being serious, and seemed a tad anxious and bored. I think Dudley left to work in America mainly because of 1) his music 2) acting opportunities & 3) Pete's tedious overbearingness (like for instance, hardly letting him get a word in edgeways). I think Pete's a very funny and unique comedy artist, but I always got the feeling that Dudley was more multitalented than Pete and somewhat of a musical genius.

Worth reading the book 'One Leg Too Few'. That fleshes out who they were, what they were like and why they behaved as they did here....and elsewhere, for that matter. :)

It rarely is comfortable for Peter and Dudley on any chat show. So many issues, personally and professionally. Aggravated by searching questions by interviewers who don't realise what awkward ground they're treading on. The best ones are where they either talk frankly without the comedy or they don't get asked awkward questions and just do the comedy.

Sadly not as funny as their skits on English TV, as I remember. Loved Dudley always but only bits of Peter.
The interviewer was cringworthy. The audience just did not get their humour.

They were close to breaking up at that point in their career due to Peters drinking. Peter would often turn up drunk at the theatre ,forget his lines on stage , and generally drive Dudley round the bend . It was even worse when they took the show on tour across the country . They'd been working practically non stop for a long long period without a proper break at the time this interview was done . I'm surprised how relaxed they both are in this interview considering the problems they had at the time .

@digitalmediafan I suggest you read the excellent Peter Cook Biography by Harry Thompson. They were very close to breaking up at the time this interview was given, Peters drinking was out of control at that point and put a terrible strain on the partnership.

Clearly Geraldo has always been terrible at his job . What a tiresome bore he is . His interview style veers from hopelessly inept to practically non existent .
