    Rebecca is the very first novel i read in English. Then i read quite a few books by Thomas Hardy. French books: I love anything by Emile Zola, my favourite being The Earth.

    Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen book. Cried like a baby in that. Love it so much.

    I love Tenant of Wildfell Hall too! Such a wonderful story. And Little Princess is a forever favorite; I reread it all the time! I really need to reread Rebecca. I've only read it once, and it was so fantastic. It blew my mind over and over again! I still need to read I Capture the Castle. So many people talk about it, and I have it on my TBR.
    Happy Reading!

      Thank you! I'm so glad I discovered all those fantastic classics recently, and I'm sure you'll love I Capture the Castle when you get to it :)

    Persuasion is my favourite Austen and Tenant of Wildfell Hall is my favourite Bronte!!

    I loved what you said about The tenant of Wildfell Hall, it sounds fantastic! I read Agnes Grey last year and enjoyed it, but I suspect I'll like Wildfell Hall even more from hearing you talk about it. Booktube definitely made me read Rebecca too, loved it! I feel like I need to reread it soon.

      weird how that has become such a booktube favourite! But I'm not complaining, I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise :P

    So many books I love on here! A Little Princess was one of my favourite books for years when I was younger and I would pick it up every time I couldn't sleep and read it all through the night. Now I'm all nostalgic and I'll have to read read it again.

    I have read and loved all of these except I Capture the Castle, which is currently on hold with the library, and The Talented Mr Ripley, which was not at all on my radar. I probably should hate it when I watch a video where someone talks about books I've already read - except I do like hearing people gush over books I liked!

    I also love Persuasion and liked Rebecca. I have Howard's End on my TBR so looking forward to that one. I definitely want to get I Capture the Castle. I have been holding out for one of the beautiful cover editions!

    I need to read The Talented Mr. Ripley. I saw the movie several times, but against my habit I still haven't read the book! Persuasion is on my tbr and I plan on reading it in the beginning of next year, oh, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall of course. I Capture the Castle is also one of my favourites. Loved this video!

    great hot pink lipstick! (just kidding) lol manages to create life without getting pregnant! I really need to try an E.M. Forster and I capture the Castle really got my attention now. I LOVE LOVE A Little Princess....so much. It's so good! I tried out Daphne Du Maurier last year for the first time I started with Jamaica Inn, then Rebecca, but I Super fell in love with Frenchman's Creek, it was very escapist and it was what I needed at the time. I must confess I never heard of Patricia Highsmith or her novels before this video. Ahh...every time I watch something of yours my TBR grows and grows...

      Ever since you mentioned Frenchman's Creek, I've been trying to find it on my hunts through the charity shops. But I only ever see Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel... might have to get it online after all. I only knew of Patricia Highsmith's book because of the 90s film adaptation with Jude Law, which is also really good.

    If you like boarding school novels i would recommend you "Jakob von Gunten" by Robert Walser. It is really short and nothing less than "victorian" but unique in a good way and actually quite funny. I read it some years ago and still remember the caracters self-description: "Ich wollte nie etwas anderes sein im Leben als eine reizende kugelrunde Null".

    I adored I Capture the Castle! Just like you said I thought it could totally be marketed today as a YA contemporary.

    • @SpinstersLibrary
      @SpinstersLibrary  6 лет назад +2

      It's scary how much like YA this book is since it's from a time where that wasn't even a concept. And people think JK Rowling invented it :P

  • @SummersMovingBookshelf

    Yes to so many of these! I also pretty much have the same definition of a classic.
    I think I may be one of the few people that loves Secret Garden more than A Little Princess (which I still greatly love). I just found a copy of Tenant of Wildfell Hall yesterday, so I’m super excited to get to that, especially after loving Agnes Grey. Sometimes I feel like the only booktuber that hasn’t read Rebecca yet 😬 Since you love I Capture the Castle, I’d love to hear what you think of Smith’s 101 Dalmatians, that’s been one of my favorites this year!

    • @SpinstersLibrary
      @SpinstersLibrary  6 лет назад +2

      After reading I Capture the Castle, I really want to find 101 Dalmatians too but I've not seen that in charity shops yet :( I also really want to read The Secret Garden, I'm sure I'll love it if it's even half as good as A Little Princess. And Agnes Grey is patiently waiting on my TBR for me to get over this Victober hangover :D

    I didn't enjoy Frankenstein but I definitely agree that it's one of those classics where I read it and realized the basic premise really tells you nothing about the feeling/story of the book! I love to go into super-famous classics completely blind.
    Oooh hearing you talk about The Tenant of Wildfell Hall has me so excited to pick it up! Once I get a real copy that's not abridged to like 100 pages... -.-
    Haha love the surprise kitty tail just cruising by!
    I love this video, Claudia! No surprise there ;) You mentioned so many that I love (Rebecca, I Capture the Castle, etc.) or that are on my TBR! For recommendations, I can't remember if you've read Dracula yet? I really enjoyed that one, and that's one of those stories that is SO famous that I actually had no idea about the actual plot or characters, which was a really great part of the experience! Definitely a great cold-weather book. Has some great atmosphere and slow-building mystery/suspense like how you described Rebecca!
    Also: I sympathize with you about cameras changing lipstick colors! However, I still think the shade looks great on you:)

    • @SpinstersLibrary
      @SpinstersLibrary  6 лет назад

      Agree about going into classics blind! Where's the fun if you already know what's happening? I have not yet read Dracula, but it's a book that's intrigued me for a while. Another one where I know the very basics of the book (vampire dude in Transylvania) but nothing about the plot or the characters. Sounds like I would absolutely love it!

    Hello Claudia! I also liked the Tenant when I read it years ago as far as its content is concerned, though I remember having issues with the form, I had the feeling that it was kind of incomplete?!? As it has been all over booktube due to Victober and as you have pointed it out just now, it has definitely made it onto my re-read list. I share your thoughts on EM Forster, I also think Howards End is the best of his novels! My recommendation is To the Lighthouse or Jacob's Room. The former simply is next to perfect in all respects, the latter is dealing among other things (!) with men being allowed to enter university and women not having that privilege 100 years ago.

    The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of MY favorites, too. Did you know that it's the first of the Ripley Trilogy? I tried the second, but didn't bother finishing it. Not even close to being as good as TTMR. I am also a big fan of Persuasion, too. Have you read Forster's A Passage to India? Pretty dark, and I loved it (movie's good, too). Definitely want to read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Howard's End. Thanks for wonderful video (oh, and your lipstick is beautiful!).

      @SpinstersLibrary  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I was aware that there were more in the series, but never really bothered to continue with it, despite liking the first book so much. Sounds like I didn't miss out on much... I've not yet read A Passage to India, but I really want to read all of Forster's works - I've only read three so far. Got Where Angels Fear to Tread on my TBR.

    Persuasion is one I need to reread as I wasn’t as convinced as you but Howard’s End is top of my list for 2019. I actually think it’s hard to tell your taste as it’s so wide ranging but I shall have a think about one I could recommend.

    I loved A Little Princess when I read it earlier this year. The Secret Garden wasn't as good though. Peter Pan was one classic I didn't expect to love but I did. I don't remember if it was on your other list, but it's worth checking out.

    • @SpinstersLibrary

      I've not read Peter Pan or even seen the Disney film! Definitely a children's classic I need to read at some point. Same with The Secret Garden.

    My suggestion for a good classic read is 'Miss Marjoribanks' by Margaret Oliphant (1865), it's very funny and I think would appeal to Austen fans. Oliphant is a wonderful writer, and deserves much more attention than she gets.

    Totally off topic, but I wanted to ask how you feel about reading so much in a language that is not your first language? I have a shocking lack of interest in Welsh literature. Partly because I find it difficult to find novels with plots of interest, also I simply don't enjoy reading Welsh as much as I like to speak or listen to it.

    • @SpinstersLibrary
      @SpinstersLibrary  6 лет назад +2

      Interesting question... I used to read more German books when I actually lived in Germany, just because they were more accessible. Funnily enough I find most English books easier to read, there's something about how the German written language works that means you have to put a lot more thought into it. Maybe it's the grammar? Also, I would love to see you do a video on Welsh language literature, even if it's a discussion about why you find it more enjoyable to use spoken Welsh rather than reading it.

    • @Llinosm

      @@SpinstersLibrary Interesting, sounds like we find German and Welsh to be similar when it comes to reading. Yes, I have that video on my to-film list!

    I totally wanted Tom Ripley to succeed! It was very confusing and disturbing to be on his side.
