Oops! What happened here is that I actually started this challenge without Hidden Power banned, but quickly realized how broken and boring that was. So I re-did the first 15-ish pokemon who had Hidden Power included in their movesets, and then didn't use it from then on. It seems like while I was gathering the clips, I accidentally used my first Pidgey run instead of the second, and then didn't realize it during my edit because I had it blurred. It's annoying that I used that clip, but rest assured I did beat Bruno with all of those pokemon without using Hidden Power. Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for pointing the mistake out!
In generation 3 there is a glitch where if ditto levels up when transformed, it gets its original stats back. So if you get ditto at lvl 99 and a couple exp. points away from lvl 100, you can just transform into onix, knock it out, level up and crush the rest of his team.
It would be really cool to do this challenge at level-cap. Almost any level 100 pokemon will be able to stop any level 50. Level even factors directly into the damage formula.
You absolutely should do this and please keep a spreadsheet going of it, I wanna see what Pokemon have the highest BQ overall after doing this a few times.
Really goes to show how smart Bruno is when he not only doesn't use all the Fighting types available, but chooses something weak to his own type. Twice
To put Bruno's onixes into perspective, in the sequel that adds heracross and hitmontop, Chuck is a gym leader with poliwrath and primeape exclusively.
I'm curious to see who could beat Bruno at a more reasonable level (probably 56 to match his Machamp, or 60 to match Lance's Dragonite since that is the level cap you'll enter Lorelei's chamber with).
I think you could probably get the Magikarp win a bit easier if you gave it a choice band, instead of hoping for 2 misses from each onyx you would only need one to miss for each onyx instead.
Great video! Some other trainers that I think could be interesting for this format: Norman: Because seeing what has the tools to exploit Slaking could be interesting RS Steven and E Wallace: To determine who the better champion is Clay: Infamous nuzlocke run killer GSC/HGSS Red Whitney: How hard is she, actually? The rival bridge gauntlet in X and Y: How bad are they, actually?
I'm all for this, but the format would have to be either changed or stuck to extremely closely. Bruno's BQ is on Kanto pokemon and only Kanto pokemon. There's no doubt in my mind that 99% of the rest of the pokemon would be able to beat him too, but for fairness, we'd either have to retest bruno with newer pokemon or only use Kanto pokemon for everyone else (alternatively, only use pokemon introduced in that game, IE only Gen 5 pokemon against Clay, or Gen 6 pokemon against the gen 6 rivals)
"I'm fighting Bruno with level 100 Pokemon" Every Elite 4 is going to loss with Level 100 Pokemon. If you really wanted to find out how shitty he was, you should form a "At what level can Bruno be solo'd" strategy video.
You might have been able to make the Magikarp fight more consistent with the pinch berry. (Forgot the name) Basically there are berry’s that get consumed once at 25% or less health that give you a stat boost, which could give you extra atk
this would have been a lot more interesting if you also tried to see just how jacked a mon has to be to beat bruno then you could have ranked them by how much you had to juice them
You should have used Double Kick with Jolteon. Both are physical, non stab, super effective against Onix and have 60 BP. But Double Kick doesn't take 2 turns and doesn't put you at risk of getting 2x damage from EQ.
I clicked on this and assumed it would be a vid with tens of thousands of views. Subbed too. This is the kind of higher quality content RUclips should be pushing
In a Gen 1 challenge run there are probably very few fully evolved Pokemon that'd have a hard time beating Bruno. Zapdos is one of the few but that's only because of Onix
Shocked you are under 2k subs. Awesome video, and great concept that I hope you continue with other trainers. Looking forward to more from your channel! 🎉
If Bruno has the worst BQ (at least when it comes to end-game trainers) then I feel like it's natural to want to see what his opposite would be. The trainer with the best BQ. And there's one obvious choice in my mind for who that might be. Red, on top of Mount Silver in Gen 2/Gen 2 Remakes. Let's see how well Red does with this challenge.
Wouldn't Struggle+Leftovers have been a better strategy for Magikarp? The Fighting types would be harder but you're not getting one-shot by every attack.
Love the concept for this video! Just wanted to mention a couple things. First of all, I noticed you have some of the normal types using Aerial Ace instead of Return. Even though it’s super effective, that only goes up to 120, while a STAB Return (w/ max friendship) is still way stronger at 151. Second, using a Focus Band for Magikarp would have cut down your resets considerably. An extra 10% chance to live every hit would be a huge time saver.
So I have no idea if this would work in FRLG, but in Pokemon Emerald, if Ditto transforms and then levels up mid-battle, then its stats will revert back to Ditto's original stats instead of that of the Pokemon it transformed into. If this does work in FRLG, then you could theoretically enter the battle at Lv. 99 with enough EXP to level up after beating the first Onix, then try to beat the rest of the team with the superior stats of a Lv. 100 Ditto. Again, no idea if it'd even work, and even if it did, it'd probably still be a "0.5" due to relying on a glitch, but at the very least, it'd be a hilarious way to overcome that barrier.
That's a good idea, especially if we try this type of challenge with lower leveled trainers! I'm still workshopping how this will go if, for example, I tried this challenge against someone like Brock. This may be a good solution
@@pokephenomenal yes it would be very interesting! You would end up having a lot more failures, but it would also require really pushing the limits of some Pokémon and using creative strategies. I subscribed! Excited to see what you do next
i think that this should also be redone in the generation 1 games, due to the lack of steel and dark types, and bruno's hitmonchan not having mach punch
Now that we've seen how high the BQ can go, I wanna see how low it can go. My best guess would be Cynthia, but I still can't imagine her going lower than 80% when all the Pokémon are level 100
Fun fact: compared to all the other trainers in the game Burno is still one of the strongest trainers in the game, it’s not a high bar but it’s still true
At 11:11 you say "our total rises by 11" and the counter goes up by 12. This confused me for a moment, but I checked the fire Pokémon you mention and there's actually 12 of them. Just pointing out for anyone else who might have gotten confused like me :) Anyways, great video, I'm subscribing in hopes of seeing other Bruno Quotient videos in the futue!
Thanks for pointing out the mistake! Although I wanna say that this was just a small error in the script, it could also very well be that I'm just bad enough at math that I messed up the count lol
😱 I forgot to include Porygon with the normal types! Tbh ever since I was a kid I've always filed Porygon in with the Psychic types because at that time Pink=Psychic to me (and pretty much all of the pink gen 1 pokemon could learn psychic). @@pokephenomenal Gotcha, short and sweet! 😂 Tbf when I didn't see Porygon in the normal types I had to check myself to see if it was actually normal and not psychic.
amazing concept! My only worry with future videos in this potential series is with trainers who have a lower general level than Bruno here, like Whitney which I saw suggested in another comment. I imagine Whitney is beatable with every pokemon if they are capped out simply because she is at level 20 with, admittedly a strong pokemon, but one who is being held back by its low level. The only way I can really think about combating that is something like a level cap, but what would be balanced isn't something I can really know. Maybe like, 2x the trainers ace or smthg?
I was thinking the same thing. Even here, I felt like it was a bit of a boring rule that the pokémon could be level 100. Maybe trainer's ace +10 or something would be great.
23:14 'these pokemon can only learn one attacking move, Tackle' he says, right after showing us the movesets where Weedle and Kakuna can very clearly learn Poison Sting. Sure it's weaker but, it can also poison as well. I have to wonder if a Shell Bell instead of Leftovers would have helped on the healing front for Caterpie, Weedle and Ditto simply on account of how much damage was being dealt. Unless it doesn't work for Struggle damage.
Yeah, I worded that very poorly and didn't really think about it afterwards, probably because poison sting is such a weak move. Sorry about that! I never tested the strategy, but it would be interesting to see just how effective using poison sting and banking on the poison damage would be. Edit: And as for the Shell Bell, I think it might have worked better. TBH it slipped my mind that you can get it in this game, since you have to trade it from RSE......as you can tell, I'm not the best at this lol
Choice band should turn the 3 hit ko on onix to a 2 hit ko at least instead of silk scarf because choice band is a 50% increase vs 10% from silk scarf in gen 3. Alternatively, struggle strategies with leftover could work.
Uh, thing is that, without Leftover, Ditto would last even less because Struggle would be dealing recoil damage (and deffense cannot decrese recoil damage). Bruno's Onix's stats are so low that the extra deffense is not enough.
It probably isn't fair to have level 100 pokemon even with some of the strongest mons, it would have been better with a modular system, better mons are at level 50 ish because bruno is on that level, and the weaker the mons having higher and higher levels to compensate for their lack of power
If you check out the most recent entry of the series, I've completely revamped the ruleset to make things more fair! The newest entry should be coming out in the next few weeks.
Will save states help Ditto win? Or is there absolutely no change at all? Did you try Magikarp with struggle? I was worried you forgot about it maybe it's horrible. But if struggle helped Caterpie and Weedle maybe it could help Magikarp..
A part of me wants Bruno to be even more humillated with the other 235 pokemon that, technically. could be used in Fire Red/Green Leaf The other part wants to prove, once time for all, who is the best Hoeen Champion (and the best Sootopolis City leader)
Can't blame you for save state-ing that magikarp fight. I'm gonna do some quick math here. Assuming you need the onixes to miss twice each, the first onix is equally likely to pick either iron tail or rock tomb, the second onix is equally likely to pick EQ, iron tail or sand tomb, and that the Hitmonchan is 25% to pick mach punch, there's only about a one-in-3,333 chance of things going right. That's comparable to your odds of getting a straight flush in a hand of Texas Hold'em.
This could be a tiered challenge. How many pokemon succeed at his max level? How many succeed at level 100? How many need level 100 + held item? How many need level 100 + held item + save states? Etc.
Haven't watched the video yet but I have a feeling doing that in gen 3 makes it a lot easier than in gen 1 despite bruno being even easier in gen 1. Simply because held items are a thing. I'd add magikarp having flail over tackle but realistically the main roadblocks in either version are going to be either weedle or caterpie, magikarp is stronger than them so if they can do it magikarp can do it. I honestly don't see the point in trying it with other pokemon beside those =p (I guess metapod and kakuna too since they aren't strictly better than their pre evolution).
12:23 “Pidgey used Hidden Power!” I thought that wasn’t allowed, or was this a clip from something else?

Haven't watched the video yet but I have a feeling doing that in gen 3 makes it a lot easier than in gen 1 despite bruno being even easier in gen 1. Simply because held items are a thing. I'd add magikarp having flail over tackle but realistically the main roadblocks in either version are going to be either weedle or caterpie, magikarp is stronger than them so if they can do it magikarp can do it.
I honestly don't see the point in trying it with other pokemon beside those =p (I guess metapod and kakuna too since they aren't strictly better than their pre evolution).
Cynthia as a notoriously hard boss would be interesting to see.
