    Around 1990 I worked for a small firm that remodeled two of the apartments on the second and third floors of the Pulitzer house in Manhattan. The house had many of the sorts of problems one would expect of a house that is 80 years old. While the apartments were in fine condition the public spaces in the house like the entry hall and main stair were not well cared for.

    Great video Ken. I liked both of them, and I’m glad one still exists. It’s a shame that the one that Pulitzer died in wasn’t donated to the state at the time to become a park or something for the community.

    Also my grandmother lived in the "Rhode Island" house that was featured in the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was moved to Litzsinger Road in Ladue, Missouri . It is right by Tillis Park. It still stands but it is now painted blue with red trim and the wrap around verandas are gone as well as the stables, chicken coop. Can you do a video? We still have a drawing of the house and the history is wonderful. My family who lived there are the Reillys. Catherine and Lawrence Reilly bought the house.

    No-one should be forced by taxes to lose their house or forced to demolish it. How absurd. I don't believe in taxing a person's primary residence up to 1.5 million. Tax should be gotten from sales tax and income tax. People spend when they can afford it. Nobody in the U.S. truly owns their house because it can always be taken away due to unpaid taxes...and this just isn't right.

      The great forest fire of September 1947 which swept over Mt Desert Island, destroying most of the summer homes of the wealthy, would have consumed the Pulitzer residence as well. But it would have been entertaining to see Pulitzer's architectural hodge-podge go up in flames. Sort of like the burning of Atlanta in the movie version of Gone With The Wind.

    While I understand why the country estate, as I'm thinking of it, was demolished, it's a shame that it, too, couldn't have been repurposed as apartments for vacationers. It would've been quite something, I'm sure.

    If I understand the story, the Pulitzers built the Manhattan mansion after Pulitzer was already blind and super sensitive to sounds while he slept. One would have to ask why a bedroom wasn't designed in the center of the structure with no exterior walls. If it was on the top floor, it could have had a skylight for daytime illumination for Mrs. Pulitzer to see. Or, better yet, build the house somewhere NOT surrounded by city sounds at the time, like Long Island, Staten Island, or somewhere outside the city. They apparently had the money to do whatever they wanted. Knowing that, I can, therefore, assume that the house was built primarily for Kate, and I am not surprised that Joseph preferred to live out his days at Chatwold.

    • @bigredc222
      @bigredc222 2 года назад +1

      Yes, when he said they had it built my first thought was his bedroom would be on the top floor surrounded by stone walls.

      @badbiker666 2 года назад +1

      @@bigredc222 That occurred to me, as well. Why else would someone that wealthy build a house they couldn't live in? But if you've got the money and the wife wants a mansion in New York, you build her a mansion in New York. Happy wife, happy life!

    When I was in high school I would cut class and wander through the huge Victorian homes that were going to be demolished to make way for a freeway and one of them had a circular dining room with rounded windows just like in this video. A charming and quaint detail of the home was that it was built for a ship’s captain and on the ornate fence were helms (the direction wheel for ships) Many of these homes were saved to make a business park in Oakland California but there are no indoor tours. One of them (which was originally a Victorian event hall) is rented out for weddings….but they have a bizarre rule that setup and breakdown of the event are between a few measly hours which is ridiculous.

      The Democrats in my state took away property tax protections for the next generation. I find it sad that a parent/grandparent works hard to pay for a home and cannot leave the home to their kids because the property taxes would be too high.

      @@erikh9991 Ya, property tax in general is really bizarre. So I don't own my home/property?? I'm just renting from the government? Once I finally bought a home I calculated the property tax per month, and it wasn't too far off from what I was paying in rent where I was before.
