My goodness Trey, you really are an outstanding interviewer. You started off asking Dr. McGowan one of the main questions I wanted to hear asked on the difference between contradiction and negativity, and then masterfully incorporated a discussion on Object-Orientated Ontology. My favorite part of Dr. McGowan’s book is where he connects love and the concept-I think that is huge-and I loved the elaborations on the contradiction of love (on how we elevate the other above us, and yet that elevation is only possible because of us, etc.). I also think it’s very astute of Dr. McGowan to understand Hegel as stuck in an Aristotelian paradigm while trying to discuss Freud before Freud: that’s really great. The exchange on Sartre and Zizek were of great interest to me, and, lastly, the question regarding the practicality and “truth-effect” of Absolute Knowing, and Dr. McGowan’s answer, were utterly outstanding. Excellent work, Trey and Dr. McGowan! Please do more!

I agree. Masterful interviewing! Most philosophy-inclined folks are semi-autistic and don't know how to enter into the consciousness of others. That said, I think Hegel was "stuck" on Aristotle, but more specifically, it's interesting that Hegel sees the possibility of suicide as something positive of humankind since this line of thought contradicts Spinoza's conatus. With the doctrine of conatus as spelled out in his Ethics anything like the Freudian "death drive" would be denied in principle. I'm shocked Hegel would disagree with that doctrine. Also, I still feel Todd McGowan shouldn't call the phenomenon of contradiction as "contradiction," to be precise, since for Hegel that phenomena is metaphysical, not solely logical. "Contradiction" implies a logical operator of negation to a proposition or sentence. That's the "dicto" part of "contradiction" -- what is written. Hegel means the concept to apply to reality, which would be fact or reality, "factum" or "re." The term "paradox" wouldn't work either, since that refers to "doxa" -- a belief or opinion. Perhaps etymologically "contrafactual" would be more precise but it has additional unwanted connotations thanks to the influence of David Lewis.
Enjoyed y’all’s discussion of love. I think a beautiful and difficult aspect of love lies in movement/becoming. Rather than the Disney idea of happily ever after, of a stagnant place of wholeness, you “fall into” like Zizek says and open yourself up more fully (your secrets/fears/desires) to true destruction by the other-a generative destruction which calls you into interaction and growth, which helps you move beyond your cozy circularities and see by another light. Love involves commitment properly because it hurts. We fall in love to lose together and are guaranteed to lose each other in the end, totally beautiful madness-good thing is that we want to suffer.
