But he also notes that he’s been broke and homeless for too long so at some point he will have to go mainstream to further his career. It’s bittersweet that he went pop. Yes it was better career wise and got him more recognition but it cost him his raw, gritty, original sound that made Trilogy so good. He pioneered a new sound of music and it influenced the pop world. HOB changed pop and r&b. Imagine if he was still making that type of music. I love the pop stuff but nothing touches Trilogy & Kiss Land

@michaelmentality tbh bro, as an OG XO fan, I absolutely adored Trilogy, mostly HOB and EOS, and even some of his earlier unreleased stuff, it was a different level of grittiness, dark and profound lyrics, flawless and eerie production, beautiful R&B synths and instrumentation....it was unlike anything I've heard from him or anyone else before...but nonetheless, I've loved his new stuff he's made as he's evolved as one of the greatest artists...Starboy and BBTM were good albums, although they got too poppy and mainstream at points...but After Hours was, to me at least, a return to Abels dark days but now with more mature songwriting and a more retro-style production. And Dawn FM was just beautifully made...can't wait to see what Abel brings out next
Funny that despite him being one of the biggest music artists at this time we still know so little about The Weeknd. Like we still don’t really know a lot about him despite seeing and hearing him everywhere now. Crazy how despite his massive amount of fame he’s still kept an aura of mystery around him, especially when compared to people of his level of fame.

Basically, it's a story about Abel and Valerie just being "hookup buddies" exclusively for every Thursday, but for some reason, Valerie treats this day as being very important (Abel doesn't see it the same). As the album goes, you learn more about Valerie's desperate need for attention from people, extremely adventurous and crazy personality, and Abel's "loveless", "empty" heart, and manipulative tendencies. Well, eventually Valerie falls in love with Abel and tries to fall into a relationship with him, begging him to stop seeing other girls... Abel basically tells her he doesn't care (however the lyrics from his perspective treat it as if he's trying to convince himself he doesn't care). Then with the crying and gunshot noise from Birds, Pt.1, we learn that Valerie metaphorically commits suicide. We come back to the story in the final track, Valerie, learning that Abel DOES feel the same... but it's too late.

The birds part 2 is about the side girl being killed by TheWeeknd's main girl. That's why it starts with a girl crying and a gun being loaded and shot and later in the lyrics he says "baby got her pleading" as in she's pleading for her life but the main girl has jealousy problems.
She didn't necessarily kill the other girl, she could of killed herself due to the pain she experienced with abel not loving her. She could of also killed Abel, metaphorically of course as revenge

The production on the trilogy takes a lot of inspiration from 70s and 80s dream pop and gothic rock. "Heaven or Las Vegas" is a reference to a Cocteau twins album by the same name that he took multiple samples from on this album. One of my favorite genres and I always found that fascinating.

Also you should check out the alternative version of The Zone(Its the music video version) it gets rid of the second verse and has drake come right in, then has the chorus come back in but its modified a bit, it sounds REALLY good.
