The two-party dominance isn't a result of the Electoral College, it's a result of all American election being first-passed-the-post. Even if the EC was abolished, we'd still only have two parties, because all pf our elections are winner-takes-all, decided on a simple majority. So if the Republicam candidate wins 40% of the vote, the Democrat 33%, and the progressive independent 27%, the Republican wins the seat, even if more people voted for a left-wing candidate. That's where the whole concept of "splitting the vote" comes from, and why voting third party is considered "throwing your vote away". In a FPTP system, you cannot have more than two viable parties, because any two or more parties with similar platforms will cannibalize each other's votes. The only real way to make additional parties viable would to change Congress into a proportional-allotment system, or to implement ranked-choice voting.
@JohnDoe-xs5gv Hey, it is a solution to the two parties only problem. The result of this solution being making the situation even worse is something not to care about, right? /s
@@Idoexist._.Idk, how about do it like my country that had an election of 7 parties in Which the 33% won the vote and listen to everyone complaining that only the minority is governing
If the US had a dedicated socialist party before 2000 then it would be unlikely for the Republicans to end up being assosciated with the colour red. Aligning with European conventions, the Democrats would be yellow and the Republicans would be blue.
