    For anyone still deciding, Go with the TrueTrac . If you have one tire stuck in the air, a light application of the foot pedal brake while giving it some gas will cause the TrueTrac to transfer power to the wheel on the ground (and the wheel in the air, it acts like a full locker). Have one installed in my 2000 GMC Yukon and went to hit some trails, I literally didn’t need 4WD. It was freaking insane. The TrueTrac was digging and chewing through everything. The truck was shaking so violently when i crawling through sand I thought I was going to brake something or get stuck. Nope. These things are amazing, HIGHLY recommend. TrueTrac will turn your vehicle into a beast.

      Yeah and if you have a traction control system like my old Land Rover it's super super good with a wheel in the air because it doesn't just transfer the torque to the grounded wheel the same as an open diff it does the torque bias affect like it will on the ground and transfers a lot more power to the wheel on the ground. And it's great because you're not hitting the brakes with your brake pedal adding brake Force to all the wheels it's only the spinning wheel and it shoots torque over there . What's crazy is the Land Rover already does it super super well with open differentials so with these it's even more intense

    Great videos. Nice to see some people properly showing how to maximize the use of a Torsen style differential.
    The reason your hand brake worked better then your foot brake is that the jeep was in 2WD and the hand brake just works on those two rear wheels. When you use the foot brake the vast majority of the braking power went to the front wheels which were not powered anyway. This stopped the vehicle dead and the light braking on the one spinning wheel did not make enough torque transfer to overcome all four brakes. This is also why a front Torsen/TrueTrac works better then a rear one with the foot brake.

    Excellent demonstration really well explained, im Jason from Wakefield in England, ive got a land rover defender 90 had it for 26yrs and about 12 years ago I put a detroit locker in the back axle and a detroit truetrac in the front axle. Neither of them have been a moments trouble and it totally transformed my defender off road and with towing trailers in bad conditions, detroit locker and truetrac limited slip difficult are the best ive had my defender in all conditions over all terrain and she is a beast and got me through it. Air lockers are too expensive and too much hassle to fit I Don't like them. Detroit/Eaton lockers are the best I'd bet my defender on it anyway you have a great channel love watching it 👍👍👍👍from ja in England.

    Exactly how it’s meant to work remember when using the brake pedal you have a percentage of front bias which is how it’s meant to be causing the delay in differential actuation but using the hand brake is directly impinging on rear brake causing resistance required by the differential to activate its lock fantastic I tell you JP!

      That's what makes these things so amazing what's my old 2000 Land Rover traction control because it can throw the torque through an open differential with a wheel in the air so imagine what these differentials and it is only adding the brake to the spinning wheel instead of all of them the way people do when they push the brake pedal LOL I have one spinning wheel and immediately launches into the other one I don't even need lockers. Practice the ol' "heel-and-toe" technique. It is the right foot on the brake pedal then (depending on pedal placement, shoe size and how one first learned the maneuver) while keeping pressure on the brake, rotate your foot and use either your toe or your heel to press the throttle. This was primarily used when auto racing using a manual transmission when downshifting to either preserve or replace "synchromesh", allowing a clean, quick gear change with little or no harm done to the transmission)

    I’m debating between a Truetrac style torsen front limited slip vs a front ARB locker for my 4Runner. The rear would get an ARB locker. Obviously price vs capability is the determining factor.
    The 4Runners ATRAC system (similar to Jeeps BLD) isn’t so great in snow where I need both wheels to spin fast instead of the abs allowing for partial spin here and there. I think a Truetrac style diff would help out here.
    My only concern would be in the rocks when a front wheel is off the ground. The ATRAC system would quickly engage the limited slip so I wouldn’t have to worry about left foot braking, but having a locker would mean I could proactively crawl over obstacles instead of ATRAC “locking” and “unlocking” the Truetrac off and on again while going over rocks etc.
    My question to you is, if you had to do it all over, would you go for the locker ? Do you think a Truetrac style torsen diff plus an ATRAC style abs brake locker is more than enough for moderate trails ?

    I had ox locker installed on the front of my TJ and I thought I had Detroit TT in the rear on Friday. At least that's what my receipt states and that's what I asked for. Going through the shops recommended break in period, I was driving to home depot today, while making a right turn through a water puddle, the right rear broke traction. Okaaaay That's not supposed to happen (I don't think). I came home and jacked both rear wheels up and spun the wheels. Wouldn't you know it.... They spun in the opposite direction.
    I will be at their front door 1st thing in the AM.
    I will put this shop on blast if they are crooked.

    • @AX01Adventures
      @AX01Adventures 2 года назад

      What you are describing, is the way a TT differential is supposed to work. In your case with a TT in the rear axle. With both rear tires jacked in the air, put it park or leave it in gear. Turn one side forward, and the opposite side will turn in reverse. This is how the TT works.
      I asked the 4x2WF what would happen if this was done, but he did not reply. The TT is a great LSD but it has characteristics that many are not aware of. Until you understand all of these characteristics you will not have a full understanding of how it works, and whether or not the TT is the best differential for any given application. Many claim the TT LSD is the best LSD, I say it depends on the application.
      I believe in your application, which sounds like a street driven Jeep application, since you were driving in Home Depot parking lot, but you use it off road as well, so you want the best of both. The TT in the rear with a locker in front is an excellent choice, for your application, in my opinion.
      There are other applications when I would not suggest a TT in the rear.
      Suppose you had a TT in the rear of a vehicle and you were towing a boat. Now let’s say you are pulling the boat up a boat ramp in the winter, and there is ice or snow limiting traction for one wheel and good traction for the other. The TT should be able to pull up the hill, and if you applied a little brake pressure, either by foot or applying the E-brake slightly, the TT would pull you and your boat up the ramp with only one wheel having good traction.
      Now suppose you stopped on the same boat ramp, half way up because you want to strap the boat down, with good traction under one wheel, and snow or ice under the other wheel. What would happen it you put it in park, and got out of your vehicle?
      See the Eaton owners manual for this in writing from the company that manufactured it.

    With the 4 wheel drive system engaged the Jeep Command Trac system would have attempted to keep all four wheels turning at the same RPM. Therefore no pumping of brakes should have been required because the Command Track system would have braked the free spinning wheel in an attempt to slow it down and shifting power to the other wheel. We have to run the test again with the system engaged! The Jeep Command Trac and the Truetrac systems are independent systems but work together or complement each other when the command Trac system is engaged.

    This definitely seems like it would work better in the front. The foot brake and gas would work better in the front diff because the brake bias is heavier in the front using regular braking. The ebrake worked better in yours because the bias is heavier in rear, or t least more evenly split. From what I've learned anyway, (on older vehicles) correct me if I'm wrong.

      Yeah my 24 year old Land Rover Discovery has really aggressive ABS traction control specifically for off-road and it will put the torque through an open differential so quick when it's in the air that with one of these the torque by its effect from the break to the gripping wheel is even more intense than it was through a open diff. It's crazy you can pick up these old Land Rovers for like 4 grand and they're insane off-road and then throw a little money into them and you don't look like everybody on the trail driving a Jeep or a Toyota. Thanks for this great video. I am still trying to decide. I have independent front suspension. So imagine I am on a rutted out trail and one wheel raises from the ground (this happens alot). The wheel off the ground will receive all the power. Do I quickly have to move my left foot over to the ebrake to make the Truetrac give power to the wheel on the ground? this type of situation is the biggest reason I am considering a locker or Truetrac. A locker might be better for this situation because I would not lose momentum while I figure out how to get my left foot to the ebrake. Not feeling fantastic spending twice as much for ARB plus the compressor tho! Thanks for any comments about this.

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040
      @ronaldrrootiii6040 8 месяцев назад

      If you have traction control it will be highly effective because when it grabs only the spinning wheel it will bias the torque and send it to the gripping wheel as opposed to pushing the brakes and sending brake power to the wheel that you want to grip and now it has to fight your brakes. If you're going to is where all the weight goes when you're doing a climb and you don't raise wheel as much with the rear but who cares if you raise the front because it can't pull you up a hill very well it's hardly gripping because even the one on the ground is barely gripping . Obviously front and rear is best but if you're only going to choose one don't get only front it makes no sense there's plenty of videos showing that only a rear is the best and if the front spins it won't matter because the rear is still pushing you with both Wheels on the ground from behind and you're going to make it just fine. The people that say get a front first of the people that aren't very serious and they just think the wheel is in the air so you might as well stop it but the rear ones are always on the ground

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040

      Yes but an open diff wouldn't send as much power because it doesn't have the torque bias effect. Which means an open differential will only send let's say 50 lb to the other side while this would send 150 lb because the torque buyers is 3:1 ratio while a open is 1:1ratio.
      Also a clutch style limited slip does not benefit from brake Force because it requires spinning to engage internally.
      Lastly if you want the best of the best attraction Control System like Land Rovers 20yrs ago or Toyota Atrac nowadays is even better because it applies brakes only to the spinning wheel. With what this guy was doing in the video you are actually fighting against the breaks because they are squeezing on the wheel at the ground also so even though it wants to turn its fighting the brakes but with traffic control it only breaks the spinning wheel and then there's differential works amazing after it grabs

  • @Mr82k10
    @Mr82k10 2 года назад +1

    If Im not mistaken, with the trutrac in a situation like that tapping the brakes will create a “locking” situation, the hmmwvs in the military use a similar diff. Thats what I was taught to do anyway.

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040
      @ronaldrrootiii6040 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah it's not really a locking effect it's really just shooting torque to the other side momentarily. The torque virus effect of these is 3 to 1 so when both wheels are on the ground you can lose a lot of traction on one side but as long as it still has a little grip it will send it to the better side but when the wheel gets in the are the brake Force becomes that weaker grip and then it sends more torque to the gripping wheel based on how hard you're pushing the brake and it multiplies the break resistance. Only crappy thing is if you don't have a traction control system it's adding brake Force to all the wheels but if you do it's only breaking the one in the air and it's even better the Hummer H1 having pretty much an identical setup as the Humvee ended up using ABS traction control around the year 2000 when Land Rover came out with it and they adopted the same company wabco for their braking system Land Rover uses open differentials to do it pretty well but H1 having these and the TC was awesome

    A good demonstration for those that didn't understand.
    The problem is that the TrueTrac is pretty useless in a manual transmission vehicle since I would need to be on the throttle and the clutch at the same time and, thankfully, my dick isn't quite long enough to reach the brake pedal.
    I know what you're going to say, but my parking brake is foot operated too.
    Because I have a F350 street truck with lockouts, I plan to install a lunch box locker in the front and, if necessary, a posi of some sort in the rear. So, no odd handling, no tire scrubbing, no premature tire wear and nobody staring because of the clicking and banging when turning.

    • @ronaldrrootiii6040
      @ronaldrrootiii6040 8 месяцев назад

      Well it opens back up because it never really locked it just transferred torque and it stops transferring to work because you let off the break. It's only transferring torque because it's matching your break resistance to the other side. If you had traction control and it grabbed only that Spinning Wheel it would be multiplying the strength of the grip the spinning wheel is receiving from the brakes and sending that across to the gripping wheel kind of like an open differential on a Land Rover traction control or a Toyota A-Trak except for it multiplies the torque instead of just sending an equal amount of torque compared to how hard the brake is grabbing and really it was never locked but just sending torque to match how hard the brakes were grabbing. It's like a chain reaction I'm sending torque by default that strength has to move to another location and it becomes the other wheel

    The military teaches you to use the brake pedal with the gas because the Humvees have a torsion differential front and rear where the parking brake would only help engage the rear tires. The front tires would not be so by getting proficient with the brake pedal you can drag your brakes as your tires start to lift and keep on moving that was a good video though

  • @gdahlm

    4wd hi and lo Jeeps traction control will enable BLD, or “brake lock differential” which will automatically apply brakes to a spinning wheel which will remove your need to manually intervene.
    While using jacks to test this in 4wd is difficult I think that you would find that your Jeep would pull you off three jacks with one tire on the ground with much less wheel spin than with BLD alone.
    Note that I have a manual transmission JK and so some of this may operate differently, but even with pre-traction control vehicles I found that dragging the brakes after the accelerator was applied was the best method for getting a tire in the air to transfer power to the wheel on the ground. But as I mentioned above in 4wd hi and lo modern jeeps will use BLD to try and keep both wheels on an axle spinning the same RPM. While I am not sure why they made this design decision the same is not true in 2wd where BLD is apparently disabled.
    I have been everywhere from the Mojave to the Arctic circle in December with my TrueTrac equipped Jeep and I love how in 4wd hi it almost removes all of the throttle reducing impacts of ESC when running through sand and how transparently it works on slick surfaces.
    While there are benefits and tradeoffs for any technology, IMHO the TrueTrac is one of the best upgrades I made to the Jeep and for my use case is far superior to a locker.

      The pulling aspect makes sense. It still performs well for me even when turning. I figured a true track would be easier on a dana 30 than a locker would. And I do have some control over disengaging it when I put it in 2wd for Street use. I like the aspect of having a locker in the rear for daily driving because I can disengage it (and Dana 44 is stronger).
