Seems that Cobain was listened to old Beatles songs when he wrote this, and I think that you can hear that in the melody. Its supposed to be about his relationship with girlfriend Tracy Marander with whom he was having problems at the time ...

Kurt had finished this song .. and went a while not knowing what he was gonna name the song.. till one of his friends asked him “What’s the name of the song?” And Kurt answered… “🤦🏻♂️ I don’t know yet” and his friend asked “What’s the song about?” And Kurt sees “it’s About A Girl” 😂 and that’s how he got the name for it 😂
