It's weird that society looks down at trades like plumbing, electrician, and hvac. Especially when these are some of the most valuable, stable, and high-paying skills to have. Society wants to condition young people to think that trade schools are for people who aren't "book smart"... whatever that means. As if going to a big state university and being stuck with student loans is some sort of rite of passage in life.

For those who know, nursing is not a “little to no college” degree. It’s 2-4 years of high stress, difficult nclex style tests, clinical hours, little to no sleep, etc. It can be done, but anyone in healthcare who’s gotten the degree and licensure to work knows it takes a lot to just get the 1st job.

These days if you live in near or in an expansive city you can earn 66k on the low end into the 100k+ range even as a new grad if you play your cards right. That being said not everyone is built for that type of work and certainly not everyone is built to last for a long time in it. Nearly half a million left the profession altogether in 2021 in just the US alone. So if you go through with it just know what you're getting into is all

I was always told that if I don’t have anything holding me back; mental/physical issues then it all comes down to determination. I’ve always worked smart and hard and if needed I moved where the work was. I did trades, then got into the automotive industry and for the last 10 years I have been with the DOD. I’m a gov civilian service worker and have found my dream career. That also means I’m a DS-05... that’s our version of GS-13 and I’m on LA locality. That’s right under $130k yr before overtime. I do not have a degree.
While I am not your average case... it can be done.
As far as this guy talking about utilities... my buddy works for PG&E(gas company) in Cali and he’s doing $48hr and he’s not degreed.
He is right about the ATC. You can go into the military and get all the quals and get out and walk on with the FAA as a 2152 controller and make huge money. If I had to do it all over I would’ve done that.

I worked as an electrician for 15yrs and the good thing about it is you can do tons of side jobs in residential homes as I worked in commercial buildings and chemical plants making 35dls an hour plus we would keep all the copper which would add up in the thousands in a year. So if you choose a trade make sure you can do side jobs while you work for a company. That way you can make enough for investing in the stock market

third eye thirst about 5 years, because in order for you to really start making money is after your apprenticeship which is a 5 year program. After that you can start making $50 an hour. So if you decide to work 60pls hours weekly that's about 9-10k a month and 144k a year before taxes.
AND THATS NOT INCLUING THE SIDE JOBS YOU DO.
like go fix a leak or change a toilet filter for a normal house where supplies are $30 and you charge $250 for the work. Easy 60-80k on the side.

New Life Trucking, I have 3 felons in the family. One did 5 years for misc crimes and now owns a very profitable contracting company, cabinet company and trucking company. He makes bank! He always was a multiple Tasker.
The other did 11 years in federal prison for drug trafficking and now sells cars; he does well, better than most, for himself.
Lastly, one robbed a bank and after many years of thinking decided he was tired of taking and decided to give back. He got out and started a non profit helping felons get on there feet and find direction. He is not rich, but he has a great family and he was recently honored on national TV by president Trump for his efforts. I call that successful.
The rest of us in the family, who have always played it safe, we work average jobs and have average success. I think felons aren't afraid to to risk. If you take the right risk, you'll be better off then most.

If I had a little brother who was thinking about skipping university (which I would probably encourage), I would recommend the following:-
    1. Software/Web Developer
(You can teach yourself most of what you need to know. Demand is high enough that small companies will usually give you a shot even if you don't have a degree)
    2. Corporate Sales
(Although it's true most positions require a business degree, most employers also admire perseverance)
    3. Real Estate/ Insurance Salesman
(Very high earning potential if you play your cards right. Because would be working on full commission, gives you confidence to work for yourself. Just make sure your employer means well and absolutely for no reason should you join an MLM)
    4. Paralegal/Accounts/Admin Assistant
(Although you don't immediately require a degree, it would be wise to eventually get one with these positions. However, you learn more from working one of these jobs in a year than you do studying the subject for four years in uni)
    5. Events Planner
(see points 2 and 4. One of the few positions where you can jump straight to a management position. Just remember to get your degree)
Actually you got to be creative when it comes to making money when you're young. Even if you have a degree, the biggest mistake you can make is being too choosy and expecting to get a job through the front door when you're starting out. Every job I have gotten ever has been through a connection, networking and luck

Correction: Not just ANYTHING related to health care is a good set. I have 3 degrees, Bachelors and Masters both in Nutrition. As an RD working at a large medical center, I make barely half what you made at your miserable, no education job, AND I hate my job as well. Not to mention I'm 100k in student loan debt. So I get the worst of both worlds. High debt, zero life fulfillment, and I can't afford to repay my loans. I'll likely be broke for the rest of my life unless I can find a way to drastically increase my income (like starting a RUclips channel seemed to do for you). And unlike you, with your 5 year guarantee of a drastic salary increase, I've been working almost 7 years at this major medical facility and my salary has gone up ... 3%. I strongly suggest every young person I speak with to consider NOT going to college. At least not immediately. It makes me very unpopular, since most parents are like mine. "You WILL go to college so you can be successful!" Those parents hate me ... Sadly, that isn't how life works anymore.

I was medically retired from the Army. The military pays way better than it used to. In 2018 a married PFC/E-3 stationed at Fort Jackson starts out at about $44,000. Most Soldiers will make that rank within the first 2 years. E-3 base pay with less than 2 years is $1932.04 + $1395 for housing + $369 for food allowance = $3700.04/month or $44,400.48 a year. Now this is only for married Soldiers. If you are a single Soldier you would live in single Soldier housing aka the barracks which is equal to college dorms and eat in a cafeteria style eatery called a DFAC or chow hall. 100% of all meals are provided to single Soldiers and there is no rent, utilities, deposits, or fees associated with the barracks. The barracks are fully furnished and the newer ones usually resemble a 2 bedroom apartment with each Soldier having their own private room. The kitchen areas are usually equipped with full sized fridge, oven/range, and a microwave with plenty of cabinet and counter space. Most barracks rooms have a shared (for 2 Soldiers) basic bathroom. The Army's gyms called Physical Fitness Centers aka PFC (not to be confused with the rank PFC) are state of the art fitness centers that are 100% at no cost to the Soldier and their family aka dependents. You would also get 30 days paid vacation aka leave. On top of that you would get between 5-12 holiday weekends that are 3-4 days each(not guaranteed). The Army has educational opportunities for the Soldier and their dependents. There are great recreational opportunities as well. All of this sounds too good to be true to so many American's and yet they still will not even talk to a recruiter. Why?

The 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, in an office, with a cubicle, on a chair, infront of a computer screen is nightmarish for me. Ive hated it. So Im trying to do something different that doesnt bring me misery. And hoping it will work out for me financially.

That is the aspect called being a Slave , get up , go to job you hate, to pay bills and eat, to come home, eat a boxed Dinner while watching TV , falling asleep exhausted , taking your antidepressant medication, to fall asleep, to be woken up by an alarm at some god awful early morning time, to be at the same horrible job, like a hamster on a wheel. It is just not worth living a life that has trapped people into a cubicle. Sad!

I went to a Technical High School and decided to take Automotive Technology. By the time I was a Junior in 2006, with the help of my shop teacher I was able to get a job as an oil changer at a Lexus Dealer for $9.00hr. This Lexus Dealer was so busy that there was 2 Shifts. It was great because not many dealers where open late and this Lexus Dealer was open til midnight. So I would get home and finish my homework and make it to the Lexus dealer by 3:45PM and work until 9:45PM. Since I was under 18 and still in High School I was not allowed to work pass 10PM. I graduated High School in 2007 and had a full time job at a Lexus Dealer. I also wanted to learn Electrical so in Nov 2007 I signed up for a 1 year Electrical Technology class. Since I was working nights at Lexus I was able to go to school during the day. I graduated in Nov 2008 from the Electrical class and found a job as an Apprentice Electrician. I was working 2 full time jobs. Electrician during the day and Mechanic at night. The only bad thing about working as an electrician was because of the Recession I would get laid off, but i didn't care because i still had a full time job at night at Lexus and was never laid off at Lexus. I did this for about 4 years working both jobs and save up money to buy a 3 family house for investment. I bought a 3 family house in 2012 and renovated the house. I finished the renovations on all 3 floors in 2014. It took 2 years of hard work. Now I rent each floor for $1,500 a month. In 2012 Lexus shut down the night shift and I went to days. I was no longer able to keep working as an Electrician during the day and couldn't find any Electrical work at nights. I became a Lexus Master Diagnostic Specialist and was making $25hr. In 2017 I found a job opening for the Utility Company and decided to apply. I got the job as a Garage Mechanic and it started me at $42.02hr and I get an additional $2.50hr for working nights. I'm also in the IBEW since I work for the power company. I'll be making over $100k a year and have no college degree, just 2 trades and I just turn 30. I busted my ass in my 20's and how I can take it easy. Thinking about going to get my Real Estate license now since I'm not doing nothing during the day.

Tow boat pilot/captain. I started as a deckhand 5 years ago making 35,000. Now I make about 120,000 as a pilot bushing barges up and down the Mississippi River. Most people go to a test prep school for a week to get their merchant Mariners credentials. Then they start a steering which means learning on the job how to operate a tow boat. Can take anywhere from 1 to 3 years, just depends on what River you will work, size of boat, type of towing, and your ability to learn. Great job nothing else I'd rather do. I work 28 days on and 28 days of. There are jobs where you work a 12 HR shift and go home every day, but they typically don't pay as well.

Within 2 years of starting my new career, I was making $22. per hour. That more than doubled my $9 per hour job, while going to school. I even got my employer to pay my college fees. More recently making over $30 per hour. Also consider 3D printing careers, or CNC machine operator, or CNC maintenance mechanic. Selected Community Colleges offer classes in those. STAY AWAY from TRADE SCHOOLS... Community Colleges are BETTER and there is a lot of AID available.

Owner Operator Truckers average 185k a year. These guys aren't "company workers", no they bought their own truck and are running a one man show business.
21 years old is the minimum age for a Class A license. Spend 10k on 30 days of CDL school. Pass the gov exam, get hired, get trained on the road for 30 days. Work as a regular for 1 year, after 1 year get on the lease program. Work "smart" and in 2 years the truck is paid off. So around 24-26 years old you can be averaging 185k a year if you started driving at 21-22 years old.
Trucking is not easy, it's not a cakewalk and it's not for everybody. But as far as gathering resources and money for the next stage of your life, nothing can beat Trucking except selling drugs lol.

A painting contractor can easily make more than $100k a year. My brother was really good with that and with home renovations. Doing electricals, dry wall, tile laying and other stuff. And he very easily made between $10k- $20k a week. To start off he would collect about $3,000 for the materials and sometimes they would pay him half up front and then the other half when the job was done. Usually at the end of the week. And one summer he contracted with a guy who was building condos and made about $100 grand during the summer. And he started when he was 17 years old.

Line haul truckers for ltl companies can make between 60k and 150k, depending on where you live, and most of the major ltl companies will pay you to get your cdl. Specific companies that pay that amount are old dominion, fedex freight(not ground or express), saia, and ups freight. Oh, and believe it or not, except for ups freight, the union companies tend to pay less.

Truck driving is also a great choice for a higher paying job. Granted it's extremely stressful and dangerous, and you wouldn't make much during your first year ($40k if you're lucky). But after you gain a year of driving experience, you can expect to make at the very least $50k, with up to $70k+ depending on what you're hauling and whether you're doing OTR (Over The Road) or a local job. And if you're an owner operator, meaning you have your own rig, you could easily make over $100k.

He drives all over the country and is gone weeks at a time but if u do it for like 5 or 6 years while living with someone else or on the truck and lessen your expenses then u can have a hefty chunk of money in the bank. U make 120,000/year and put 75k in the bank each year for 5 years then u have 375,000 dollars in the bank. If you are wanting to save up money and do it pretty quick then i would suggest this as a job. U would hqve more in the bank as an “uneducated” truck driver then some doctors or others who went through alot of education for their career.

As an air traffic controller I agree, most people have no idea what we do or how much we make. One thing you didn't mention is for ATC you either have to go to college OR be military trained. I have never sat in a college class room and have made as much as $240k in a year. Speaking of the military, it will pay you to learn a bunch of different trades that pay well on the outside. Finally, if you decide the military lifestyle is something you dig, it actually pays pretty well if you stick with it.

No GED required but you are pretty much hand chosen by veteran timber fallers based on your work ethic, reliability, intelligence and physical build. Smaller framed individuals generally aren't selected for safety and durability reasons.
It's good work if you like being outdoors and don't mind driving 2-3 hours per day. Usually 1-2 months off per year due to snow melt, but gives you time to go on vacation and or rest up.

How can you say dont go after a job for the money go after your passion when people need money to survive more than finding a passion that pays nothing.
65 to 100K a year many people cant even find that with a degree.
Many people major in college their passion and come out never finding a job in it.
The main resource people looking for today is money. You must do what you have to do in order to do what you want to do.
Ask someone with 3 college degree and working a 9 dollar an hr job if he/she rather a 100 K a year job than a passion she not getting anything for. They would choose the ladder.
