      You learn very quickly that sanding is the worst job on any project. I'd rather go back and add more mud than spend days sanding. I also learned to carry a pencil to mark spots that need more attention, so you remember where those places are. (instead of finding them while doing primer)

    The 3 previous owners of my house must have got some real good deals on repairs, and while my work isn't quite professional level yet, my top floor has plenty of terrible taping that looks a lot like this video.

    Just did one very similar. Attic room on a 1880's Victorian. Mansard roof was 18/12 pitch. Old plaster had been gutted and dry walled over rough cut lumber. Looked like waves on the ocean. I roughed it up with a cheese grater, primed it with lacquer, and floated it out with 20lbs. gauging to 5 gal. regular mud. Came out great, but I have no idea how long it will last. BTW, I did tape it all before I floated it. Glad winter's almost over and I can get back on the roof. This job reminded me how hard plastering can be. 6 dormer windows, b--tch angle over head, b--tch angle waist high. The hawk felt like it weighed 1,000 lbs. before I was done. Thanks. I'm still watching even if I haven't been commenting.

    Love your videos! I just finished a doing a loft with angled ceilings. Pre-filled every gap no matter how small, ended up with more mud on me and the floor, but the results on the off-angle corners looks pretty good so far and hoping that it never turns out looking like this one. I always think that no matter how hard I try and pay attention to the details it's still going to look like crap. I'll forever hate doing drywall but your tips help make it at least a little better. Thanks!

    I had something similar in my apartment, but reversed. The ceiling has 1 beam that it's slightly lower that the wall beam (error during construction but structurally solid), and instead of fixing it, they snapped the drywall inwards and added a lot of mud to mask it. No surprise it cracked after a few years.
    Your videos are great and helped me a lot during the renovation of my apartment, thank you so much!

    I live in Hawaii, so few houses here have insulation, and the structural design loads for roofs doesn't include snow, so a lot of times, roof rafter are 4 ft on center and then drywalled, typically with 1/2 inch. I've fixed soooooo many ceiling drywall joints in our 40 year old house. Have to install backer strips and then patch in new drywall. Most times I install 2x4s in between the roof rafters at the joints screwed into the rafters. I've also gone to using Fibafuse on all the flat joints I repair. I know that paper tape would be fine, but I'm not a professional drywaller and Fibafuse gives me quicker and smoother results. I do paper tape corners and joints on walls though.Most likely the fixed ceiling joints will outlast the house.

    I moved into an old farmhouse that has had decades of handyman specials updating it, and I have quite a bit of drywall that is similar to this. My finished attic has some seams that are similar to this, and throughout the rest of the house they used mesh tape for everything (including the corners!!). They also didn't use enough screws in the drywall, so a lot of the panels move and cause cracks along their joints, Ive been fixing those one by one as I refinish the rooms, but damn it is an overwhelming task when the whole house is like that

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 2 года назад

      My brother is in a different business, but he always bills a half day minimum. It may also require figuring in travel time, so a fixed amount for a half hour each trip. (just an example) On most jobs there's enough odds & ends to fill out that 3-4 hour billing time, even if it's just cleaning up to make the next day easier. Oh, never break that down for the customer because some will nit-pick. So much to do drywall PLUS 4 afternoons to get it into primer (another 16 hours) is the cost of the job. (plus materials) Just give the TOTAL to the customer so as not to confuse things. You will also find that quoting high and (possibly) adjusting the bill down later will make you seem like a hero. BTW, don't be afraid to stop and make adjustments if you find a problem. Hidden issues are not your fault and should be shown to the customer for clarity.

    That looks so good now you may have to worry about the landlord raising the rent.

    My theory on why that ceiling dips and hangs between every truss is well for one, 24” on Center is the norm. Also when it’s hung they lift it up at put some screws in the corners to hold it. So the Center of the drywall is already hanging and when you start screwing off the rest of the drywall sheet it’s like pin up a blanket to the ceiling. All it does is hang between screws/truss. Whenever the drywall is installed with a lift and it’s screwed off fully before the lift is released then you never get the droopy ceiling.

    Btw I bought the festool planex 2 based on your recommendation. I am kicking myself for waiting so long. Wow game changer. I have been able to get pretty good with it so I am doing hardly any hand sanding.

      Yup. It's one of those super expensive tools that's actually worth it. I love it!

    When taping off angle corners, can regular drywall paper tape be used?

    👍 I've made a similar correction years back and wondered if I should have installed backing. Never got called back to fix it again so ether it still looks decent or I got fired and don't know it lol

    I have had one of those Mikita for the last year. Really fantastic. I wish every plumber had one. Just be careful with the blades.
