I just saw them last night with Megadeth and Chad Grey paused, twice, to tell us that heavy metal music saved his life and I felt every word. He's a great lyricist.
Same, last week for me! It was cool to see Megadeth but I literally went specifically for Mudvayne first, All That Remains second and Megadeth just happened to be there too haha
Finally. This is the first reaction I’ve seen that caught onto the fact he was talking to himself. This is one of my go to songs when I need to dig deep & answer some questions internally. Well done sir!
This and Korn for me, both amazing bands that cope with their feelings of anger and aggression in the form of music that hits the soul, DEEP. Definitely more bands out there too but I’ll always have a special place in my heart for some old school mudvayne & koRn🤘🏻 Everyone is fighting internal demons that nobody knows about which is why we all need to come together and support each other, and their music does just that!
I have to say I’ve always interpreted this song as he was talking to a toxic/abusive person in his life. “Tear meat from the bone, tear me from my self, does it make you happy now?” To me it seems that some people are never happy unless they can hurt others. Him describing the deep despair he feels and asking if the person tearing him down is finally feeling happy now.
Ooh... That's a good thought. I was in a toxic relationship for years and didn't realize it until it was too late to fix, but I never thought of that. Cause I kept doing that, digging the hole deeper to make the other happy and it was never enough for them.
I think the line, "Tear ME, from MYSELF" Is indicative of self inflicted feelings. I used to think of it the same way as you, but then seeing this, hearing a new perspective, and listening to the song a few more times, I do see the likelihood of this being about Chad himself. However, what moves you is what its meant for.
As a kid i was very depressed in school, bullied, still looking for an identity, that's when nu metal came around and these bands were talking about the things i was feeling, the music was intricate and creative without ego driven "look at me" guitar solos or the pithy love songs of pop music, it was exactly what i needed at exactly the right time.
This lead singer is also the lead singer on another band called "HellYeah." The song called "Hush" gives you insight to the childhood roots of his pain. Definitely a therapist song.
i listen to this song religiously and even seen Mudvayne live last valentines day and only now do i truly understand the lyrics as i am typing this in tears from my own depth of the soul. thank you for translating the message
They are a band from Peoria Illinois, I had a chance to see them a couple times before they went mainstream, so the cornfields and the butterfly is something we all see. it is a perfect sight, especially with the tornados and the butterfly ends up flying away at the end of the storm. Great visuals. Just subscribed. Keep it up brother.
Just came across this channel. A lot of metal music is why I'm still here today. Love watching you break it down. The song severed by them definitely saved me.
You’d probably appreciate a song of theirs called “nothing to gein.” It’s told (spoiler alert) from the perspective of Ed gein, the serial killer/grave robber.
I have always liked Mudvayne since I first heard "DIG". It is crazy that I always thought of how you explained it. My philosophy and ideology has always been-You are responsible for your own happiness. My own "therapist" is my mirror. Not sure how healthy it is to talk into a mirror and ask your WTF?? But hey, it helps me. I have cut people out of my life and then be a bit sad after I shower. I look in my mirror and ask-Was I too mean, I felt diplomatic in saying goodbye. Time separates everyone, parallel paths. How happy are you in your sadness from ridding a negative energy.
This song and this band got me out of some tough times in the early 2000's. Thank You for your work. It is also why I got into the "help others" field... There is a song I think you could take a deep dive into as well by the Blue Man Group called Persona from their Complex album and the video is from The Complex Live Tour Concert...
I'm no psychoanalyst, but here is my theory on why the video was shot in the location. Where they are actually performing in the video is bare dirt. Nothing. All around them was a beautiful field of flowers and butterflies. There's all sorts of happiness and beauty surrounding them, but when you are in a dark place in your life, you feel there is nothing. So they are in a place of nothing even though there is something wonderful around them yet they can't have the ability of feeling that.
Great video and explanation! Remember growing up always jamming out to these songs not truly understanding the full meaning behind them but now as an adult I get so fascinated by watching breakdowns like these explaining the meaning behind the lyrics, truly powerful and life changing. Music has always been a coping method for me, this world is hard and unforgiving but we all need to hang in there as tomorrow’s always a new day! Life’s what you make it.
I feel they picked that background as a place of peace. Where wildflowers and butterflies roam and the screaming his pain on a patch of cold dirt( his hole gets deeper in their field of joy) someone is mentally wrecking him and while he sees nothing but endless butterflies and wildflowers it doesn't belong to him it's just out of reach from his hole. But also a facade from the hurter. We're in paradise as long as you comply. Gibe you everything tear me from the bone are you happy. I listened. Are you proud. Edit: commented before you said put yourself in this place bc of desicions. And damn. Thats another good one reason. He has his field but hes stuck in his hole bc what he did and now he cant have his wildflowers.
I'm 44. I was sexually abused for years from a very early age, along with other traumas. From my experiences, happiness isn't the only goal. I've been happy and have a wonderful wife and kid. Despite this, I've experienced emotions ranging from happy exuberance all the way to despair and suicidal attempts and ideation. I still struggle internally to this day. It seems that feeling and accepting all emotions, authenticity, feeling whole and not broken, and love/connection with yourself and others are more of the goals. Easier said than done and this may change as I explore myself more. Thanks for your videos as I have found music helps me explore myself even if it is very painful.
Bro, I have been listening to this song for 20 years, I have talked about this song with probably 100+ people in my lifetime and not one time has anyone ever said it is him talking to himself. I had never considered he was talking to himself, I just assumed someone took advantage of him and left him alone once they were done with him but after you said that, I paused your video and read the lyrics. You are 100% correct. He was definitely talking to himself.
Genius take on this. I never listened to it that way. But the struggle with ones own self makes perfect sense for this song. Your take and even a few words for thought were helpful to me on this day. Thank you.
Love this reaction style. Understanding the mental/emotional side of a song is understanding it on a more personal level. Eminem "Stan" and "Bad Guy" aka Stan2 are a great emotional rollercoaster with plenty of hidden meanings. Also love Pink Floyd "The Wall" album for its emotional rollercoaster style
Just found you here mate, first off amazing video absolute quality and very insightful in a way I never thought of for this song. Secondly I really think you should give Not Falling by mudvayne a listen it’s a song dealing with fighting inner demons and how they bring you down
As a man who lived with a woman who blamed me for all of her problems, degraded and put me down to feel better about herself, made me sacrifice my hobbies while she got to enjoy herself, and left me to take care of my son alone while she went out to party I can relate to this. By the end of it I was so broken and trapped I downed a bottle of ibuprofen and half a bottle of jack and if the alcohol poisoning didint kick in before the ibuprofen did I wouldn’t be here. Now we are no longer together and i feel hopeful and free.
Just came across your channel and subbed immediately since Mudvayne is my favorite band. You seem genuine and actually listen to the lyrics. As others have said in the comments, Please do a listen to Mudvayne - Severed. That song literally saved my life. I'm curious to know your take on it. Thanks for doing what you do.
Seen a tool song done. Enjoyed the reaction. Now this. Ya. Happy can sometimes feel like a old friend I've lost....on bad days anyway. I talk to a psychiatrist. But can't do therapy. To much stuff I'd rather Leave buried. Sometimes the happy memories have to go because there attached to memories that make me mad or sad. Dead memories. -slipknot
Loving these videos! Great choices so far. You should check out Blue October - Fear. It's incredible and really reaches the soul. Can't wait to watch more of your videos!
Awesome analyzation. This was used for the theme song to vengeance 2005 in wwe. If you’re a wwe fan Hey, would you review/analyze the song “the arms of sorrow” by killswitch engage?
I would love to see you interpret some Hurt lyrics. It's a band in a similar genre. I dare you to analyze Flowers. It's technically part of a song called That (Such a Thing), but might as well be its own song.
This is an insanely unique content idea! Please keep it up!! You need to look up Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel and do a psychological breakdown of Whitechapel song When A Demon Defiles A Witch!! I’d love seeing your take on all of that and especially Phil
Hickory Creek as well, Phil's story is definitely an interesting one. He seems like the type of dude I could hang out and have a beer with, man's been through some things.
I’m considering offering online life coaching sessions. This would likely begin sometime during the Fall. I’ll be providing a future update here on the channel if you’re interested in learning more. Regardless, thanks for watching. Glad you’re here!
Doc. Try songs from Mudvayne like: Severed, -1, The patient mental, Nothing to Gein, Death blooms, their lyrics are deep. You won't regret it.... 💪🏽😎🤘🏽
Great reaction and lyric breakdown from your own expertise in the field of psychology. I'd be interested to hear your reaction to more of Mudvayne, specifically songs like 'Nothing to Gein' or 'Death Blooms' or 'World So Cold'. They are all interesting songs if you're looking at them from a psychological view. If I had to pick just one for you to react to it would be 'Nothing to Gein' though. It's a glimpse into the life of Ed Gein, the serial killer and body snatcher. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it, because it's a great reflection of the man's life. Ed was very sheltered by his mother, obsessively devoted to her, and she was kind of a puritan. She taught him of sin and how he shouldn't trust other people because they were sinful and dirty. Then she died and left him to himself. Which eventually drove him crazy without her guidance. He had left his mother's room exactly how she had left it and nailed it shut like some shrine. I really like this phrase of lyrics that reflects this: "Mommy, do you still live inside of me? I'm so lost in my life without any guiding Protected me my whole life from everything Nailed shut the doors to the shrine To screen your dead eyes from me and my sickness Mutilate and sew my new clothes for masquerading Aprons of flesh corpse scalped hair with skin upon my face"
Thinking you'd like IMN,in resonnance with Pearl Jam'Jeremy'.... I've to thank you for doing this, your reaction on Jeremy was really moving and concerning to me,french guy who tried to leave more thon 10 years ago,and Still having consequences of it ,especially incompréhension and isolation, many thanks
I highly recommend diving into more Ren, it will grow your channel exponentially because his lyrics have such strong meaning. Sick Boi is an interesting one and Suicide as well. I'll donate toward your channel when I can but I'm dealing with disability caused by PTSD and panic disorder, and they don't make for the best combination as you can imagine. I recommended his whole catalogue of music but I would also like you to hear the OurVinyl session of Nose on the Grindstone by Tyler Childers. You can feel the soul in his voice; he is a cousin of mine who made it big. Kudos to your channel and keep at it, you'll become a very large channel with your insights.
You want to earn your stripes. React to Daddy by KoRn. After the reaction research the story behind it. No spoilers react raw. Or Prison Sex by Tool. Let's see your skills.
If you’re enjoying the heavier side, I would highly recommend Architect’s “Gone with the Wind”. Quite a lot to unpack in that song, and whole album due to Tom’s fight with cancer.

It's cool to see the difference between when he wrote Negative One versus where he was when he wrote Happy.
Mudvayne is a study you might want to look into.

There's certainly plenty of pain and anguish to wade through in that album!
I will definitely agree, and I'd luv 2 c u do it ✊

Mudvayne “A World So Cold” super powerful emotionally. Probably my favorite of Mudvayne
music is my weapon. as an empath, it's my cleanser.
Just saw them last week for the first time in 20 years. They sound just as good, perform just as intense. One of my favorite bands, hands down.
