The one time I made jeans I really wished I had a second machine. The thread changing for topstitching was driving me nuts even before I got half done.
My needle threader needs to be fixed on my machine so as someone who is soon going to do a pair of jeans and need to thread the needle by hand each time, I already know I'll be annoyed. 😂
I learned my lesson about having multiple machines when I was stuck at the beginning of the pandemic with my machine in the shop. I always have a back-up now!
Ah yes, fluff....I just turned a big, down filled duvet cover into two large bed pillows. The mess was truly something to behold 😆 But so worth it. Saved me a good 100€, I'd say. I need to batch sew some basic tops for spring/summer as well. I have enough fancy stuff, but my basics are pretty worn out. Thanks for the motivation!
Ohhhh yeah that sounds like a lot of fluff. But worth it in the end, just like this! Even if I had to lint roll even the fabric covers of my storage cubbies. 😂
I did this recently but with matching Child's, 18 inch and 14 inch Doll dresses. When I did the top for 1, I quickly grabbed another top and did it there. Although it was for 3 items, it "seemed" easier.
Great job, congrats! If I had a sewing room like yours, I would live in it full time -- so spacious and organised and tidy. Your cutting mat confused me at first; I thought it was pixelated, like it is in a sewing-world witness protection.
Nice job. Super retro vibe. Cigarette pants give me fond memories of Marlo Thomas on That Girl, and the characters of Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show and Samantha on Bewitched.
I drag all my machines out when I’m changing thread colours a lot. Then i remember why some of them are old machines and put those ones away again. Maybe I should chuck them out next time instead of putting them away 😂 Your 4 pants turned out well! I bet you’ll be pleased to have them in your wardrobe at last 😁
I have that exact pattern. I’ve never cut it and I’ve had it for years. The reason I never used it is because I thought it was a low rise pattern, but it looks like it sits right at your waist. I like pants that fit at the waist. I know you probably don’t want to disclose personal info but your height and size would be a great help. If I looked as good in those pants as you do I would not care what size I wore. LOL. Great video and they look beautiful.
Oh yes it's definitely a high-waisted pattern. The original pattern out of the envelope (not lengthened like I did) was meant to be like 50s capris I think. The problem about the size is I have so heavily tweaked the fit on these over time, I'm not sure it'll be completely helpful. But I'm 5'2" and have a 26" waist/about 36" or so hip, and I believe mine started life as a size 8, graded up to a 10 at the hips. I know since then I've taken the legs in quite a bit compared to the original pattern. Hopefully that helps! ☺️
Such an incredible idea and loved the documentation of the process. I hadn't considered using a neutral-colored thread for a batch project before. Also noticed that you cut your waistband interfacing without seam allowance which is so brilliant! I never paid attention to whether patterns tell you to do this and always just cut out the same measurements of the waistband, then would get annoyed with the bulk. Thanks for all the great tips! And, great (nail) tips, too! Love those colors.
I batch sewed shoe bags for my nephews for Christmas. It was the absolute way to go, but it did feel very tedious to be honest. I wish I could get that pattern still - I really like these pants that you have made! Great video and very enjoyable. Thank you 😊
Perfect lap zipper. I still need to learn how to do that and incorporate the waistband so the button or hook are clean and nice. I subscribed. Love your sewing space. You have a corner sewing station and it looks like a huge cutting table. I'm moving to a bigger apartment and can't wait to have a big table! Must be very inexpensive though..hummmm. ideas?
Thanks! I do plan to show how I do that in detail as a tutorial at some point! 🎉🎉🎉4 pairs of trousers! Congratulations! I also batch sewed my first shirts because (hello burrito method) I need to read instructions a thousand times and this meant I could do more and read less. It did drive me crazy the first time but it got easier and was super great for my self-confidence (did not have to spend hours reading instructions and not sewing) and I was very happy with the result! Yes, the colours were different…and I also had to change the thread…
That's a great idea. I do have a cigarette pants pattern that I want to sew up. And a few different fabrics. I never thought of batch sewing but it makes complete sense. Btw I laughed about the post-it note reminder for the nap. I learned that lesson the hard way the first time I made a corduroy blazer for my boyfriend years ago. Never ever did that again with corduroy, but it did happen AGAIN some years later with some fabric I didn't realise HAD a nap. After that little contretemps, I became extremely careful to check any fabrics that looked suspiciously like they might have a nap.... And thats a great tip about stay tape for the zippers....I've never seen that before.
Oof I feel your pain! I've managed to not do that with corduroy but I did spend eons trying to decide which was actually up and down on these fabrics, because I couldn't really decide! It was super subtle. But at least I had my trusty post-it reminder. 🤣
Thank you for the tip, i.e., lay fabric on top of one another and cut. I will start small by cutting two fabrics at the same time and then batch sew. Love your trousers; great colours and fit ❤
Thank you for reminding me that I have a 1950's 3/4 length batwing sleeve blouse that's only a few small tweaks from being able to batch a nice pile of blouses in time for summer. I also have a pair of cigarette pants that have to go through the mock-up stage. Thanks for the inspiration. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
I have just batch sewn 3 black fleece lined sweatshirts 3XL for my son. Whilst it seemed such a good idea. The black fluff was endless and by the time I got to the last one. I was slightly beyond irritable, kept going because I wanted to get to the end of the mess.
I've never really done much batch sewing for my vintage clothes. I can totally see the advantages though. The finished pants look great. Vintage jeans are on my list this year so maybe I'll have to test out batch sewing! On a side note, your sewing is so beautifully neat. It makes my perfectionist heart so happy watching you sew. ❤
Ive had 2 pairs of pants cut out and ready to sew since the beginning of the year and since then ive done everything BUT sew the pants...i should get to them. Eventually 😅
That was kind of like this. Even once I started prepping I was like hmmm what else needs to be done first. And then eventually, it was nothing. So hey here I am, 4 pairs later finally. 😂
You really inspired me to do batch sewing, it may be tiring but it saves time and effort. Loved all your tips and I would really like to see in detail how you sew your lapped zippers and waistbands! Wonderful tutorial! 😍😍

Love this! ❤ Do you recommend using neutral grey thread for other fabrics as corduroy? Isn't is visible if the fabric is less fluffy?
A lot of quilters use grey for piecing quilts because it blends the best with just about any colour, and splits the difference if you're doing high contrast or warms and cools etc - and quilting is usually done with cotton - not fluffy at all.
You want to check your tension and stitch length on scrap, open and press the seam, to verify it's giving you a good result before your actual piece. But when those settings are correct - which will also be the best for durability, grey is perfectly adequate for nearly anything.
