Does Betsy Devos forget that schools are filled with adult custodians, teachers, support staff, administrators, counselors, secretaries, nurses, therapists, and food staff workers? It's not exclusively children. She mentions children are at a lower risk, yet ignores the adults.
The idea in this post is on point. Secretary Devos ignores this part of the school equation. What will happen when school staff members are infected with coved 19? What happens when staff members call in sick? It is normal to hire substitute teachers or move staff from another school to cover for those who are out sick. She fails to recognize or acknowledge how this will impact schools staying open 5 days a week. I was a High School teacher for 35 years. Unlike the Secretary of Education I have actually spent thousands of hours in the class room in a High School with 2,700 students and hundreds of staff members.

Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for that? • What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid? • Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay? • Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who is going to pay for that? • What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of HIPAA regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long? • What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out? • How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid? • How many more people are going to die, that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer? 30% of the teachers in the US are over 50. About 16% of the total deaths in the US are people between the ages of 45-65. We are choosing to put our teachers in danger. We're not paying them more. We aren't spending anywhere near the right amount to protect them. And in turn, we are putting ourselves and our kids in danger.

There were reports of increased rates of abuse." Behavioral health problems will not he solved by going back to school, nor will abuse. My district had a survey and asked the staff and what the parents prefer. Most of us want to go back, but the reality is we don’t have enough space. We have classrooms to separate the students but no staff. I know my students they’re are going to share stuff not wear masks and sit close to each other. So what happens if someone gets sick that means that all the students who came in contact with the infected person need to quarantine. I work in a high school which means they go to four different classes a day. Now what

Most tests are done to confirm an infection, when there is already a suspicion, either by doctors or by individuals themselves, so saying that 9% of the population has or had an infection of corona virus, based on the positivity rate of the tests is already false and a non-starter.

In our state, we have two counties with 0 cases. It would be stupid to keep those school districts closed. I live in a big city. There are different zip codes--some with only few cases and then there's mine with the highest number in the city. The schools in my area need to be looked at closely before they make a decision to open here. Every community is different. She can't just wave her magic wand and say 'OPEN, because Germany and Sweden did it."

What happens when staff members call in sick? It is normal to hire substitute teachers or move staff from another school to cover for those who are out sick. She fails to recognize or acknowledge how this will impact schools staying open 5 days a week. I was a High School teacher for 35 years. Unlike the Secretary of Education I have actually spent thousands of hours in the class room in a High School with 2,700 students and hundreds of staff members.

• If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? Is their sick leave covered, paid?
• If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days?
• Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for that?
• What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid?
• Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay?
• Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who is going to pay for that?
• What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of HIPAA regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long?
• What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out?
• How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid?
• How many more people are going to die, that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer?

We are choosing to put our teachers in danger.

The association itself says it's situation at the very end of the interview. Their opinion on schools reopening, is just that: an opinion against the fact that the safest option is for schools to promote remote learning and keep kids away from the classroom. The problems they cite have nothing to do with the virus, and more on personal home life: "Kids being home led to increases in behavioral health problems. There were reports of increased rates of abuse." Behavioral health problems will not he solved by going back to school, nor will abuse. Sounds more like bad parents with bad parenting having to actually deal with a child they brought into this world on their accord. Classrooms can't fix shitty parents. They also say: "What we have seen so far in the literature - and anecdotally, as well - is that kids really do seem to be both less likely to catch the infection and less likely to spread the infection." Less likely does not mean impossible. My district had a survey and asked the staff and what the parents prefer. Most of us want to go back, but the reality is we don’t have enough space. We have classrooms to separate the students but no staff. I know my students they’re are going to share stuff not wear masks and sit close to each other. So what happens if someone gets sick that means that all the students who came in contact with the infected person need to quarantine. Most tests are done to confirm an infection, when there is already a suspicion, either by doctors or by individuals themselves, so saying that 9% of the population has or had an infection of corona virus, based on the positivity rate of the tests is already false and a non-starter.

And she said that each state will look different in that regard. If we want our kids to compete globally we need to make sure they are receiving an education. AND, more kids have been killed in the last month as a result of the surge of crime in our country than from COVID. So let’s not pretend that this is all about keeping kids safe. The most current studies in regards to children and the virus showed that kids do not spread it at the rate that adults do. So adults will be safe if they wear a mask right? That’s the solution. Teachers wear masks just like we have to when going to stores and such. And kids who are at risk can homeschool or have the option for an online education. Why wouldn’t that work for everyone? We have to reach herd immunity or have a tested vaccine OR live in quarantine for an undetermined amount of time. Why if protesting is encouraged, where there are large groups of adults (proven to spread the virus at a faster rate than kids) continuing to gather in large numbers, can our kids not go to school with safety precautions? This is a joke of a discussion. And our current administration had no hand in the issues with our school system. We had 8 years before this of legislation that has allowed all of the current issues to come into existence. Michelle Obama is the reason why my kids are eating nachos as their “healthy” lunch through the school system. In our state, we have two counties with 0 cases. It would be stupid to keep those school districts closed. I live in a big city. There are different zip codes--some with only few cases and then there's mine with the highest number in the city. The schools in my area need to be looked at closely before they make a decision to open here. Every community is different. She can't just wave her magic wand and say 'OPEN, because Germany and Sweden did it."
