    For those thinking Shwmai is odd spelling. It isn’t really. It’s a contraction of Sut+mae+hi
    i.e How is it?
    A variant of it (Sumai?) is used in North Wales. Gogs don’t always say “Sut dach chi?”

    • @sthenotheG
      @sthenotheG 2 года назад

      Sut dach chi? in the North is the same as Shwd ych chi? in the South, not Shwmai.

      @sthenotheG this is incorrect also,
      It's Sut dych chi for formal and informal is Sut wyt ti that's not south vs North

    I learnt Welsh in mid Wales and the prof chose south, as she was based in Aberystwyth university, but even we taught ydy'chi not simply dych. Some of the things you were commenting on would have blown her mind too. A teaching app is no place to teach short cuts.

      I'm using DuoLingo, it wont make you fluent but it's one of the only apps that teaches Welsh, and it's free. The Welsh government does online classes but it costs money to sign up.

      I believe shwmae is S.Wales and sut mae is more formal and more common in N.Wales

      I use Duolingo and trust me, you will get nowhere if you compare that app to other sources of language material. Plus, you're criticising a TV programme from the late 80's! LOL!

    • @kingbolo4579
      @kingbolo4579 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@robpickles3736 Duolingo's the reason I'm doing Welsh in the first place. I started it idly and have unaccountably become hooked. But I don't think you can learn a language from Duolingo. I plan to complete it to give myself a taste of the basics, then do the Linguophone course to broaden my grammatical understanding, then get an Italki tutor.
      As for the age of the program, yes, what of it? Doubtless that's the reason it's slow, but it's still slow.

      @@kingbolo4579 Excellent! Just like Duolingo opened the pathway for you to learn Welsh, the 'Now You're Talking' TV series probably did the same for many Welsh people. Either way is great considering the moronic English men in power tried to kill off the Welsh language in the 19th century. (I'm English)
