I think the best season would be May, when the mountains are green and the temperature is not too high, or October-November, when the leaves are beautiful.
From Osaka to Narai-juku, take the Shinkansen to Nagoya, then transfer to the JR Shinano Limited Express bound for Shiojiri. From there, take a local train to Narai Station. 奈良井宿はいいですね。妻籠、馬籠も良いがなりより規模が大きい町並みにも関わらず、観光地としては静かで、今も生の普通の生活が生きている感じで、そのさりげなさに惹かれます。
