C64 music : I Ball by Rob Hubbard

- Main theme to the budget game I, Ball published by Firebird. This Rob Hubbard composition was inspired by the Cabaret Voltaire songs 'Whip Blow' and 'I Want You' at the request of the game's producers.
I produced this game many years ago for Firebird and Cabaret Voltaire's 'the covenant the sword and the arm of The Lord' was my favourite album. I sent it to Rob to do a pastiche and he hated it but still did the job. I think it's a pretty good representation of the album. Part of the fun was you could use the joystick to play along with the tune. Cheers!
You crazy guy. You went and forced him to make something incredible! Even now, decades later, I'm marvelling at how fresh it sounds.
You may have produced it but a mate of mine at the time wrote it. Well, I say a mate, I think we took an instant disliking to each other.
@@vapourmile haha!
Awesome Game, i always loved it, great catchy music and very playable if challenging ! :) Thankyou Colin for the memories.
what an INSANE track. One of my absolute favorites from Hubbard!
This is a fine example of the music being so much better than the actual game.
I didn't play the game as much as others when I was a kid but boy did this soundtrack stick to my head the most.
That feeling when the break at 3 minutes 8 - knowing youd got further than the last go!
Hubbard Classic!
Brilliant. Zzap and Crash. Kept me sane through my youth. Happy memories. Thank you!
Had a random memory flashback about I, Ball. When I was still at school I was getting the train back from London to Cambridge after a Commodore (or other 8 bit) show and checking out the C64 tapes I had bought and the guy next to me asked "What did you get from the show? Oh I wrote that one..I'm Timothy Closs" or something like that. He was probably still at school or uni back then but was older than me so I was a bit surprised but he seemed like a very nice guy and happy to see his game being enjoyed by this kid. :)
This was always one of my all-time favourite C64 tunes. And the actual game was insane - today's gamers would balk at the difficulty of 8-bit games!
Zzapp 64, those were the days, always loved the Xmas editions. Wish i had kept them, i have every single one!
I recently got nostalgic about ZZap 64 too (also had all the issues) and found them on Ebay as downloadable PDF files!
I recognise your name, man. I was a member of the Firebird Silver club as a kid. I had a badge, membership card and got the newsletters as well! XD
I imagine a cover of this musical piece by a Dream Theater style progressive metal band, because the bass track could be played on a 6-string bass by John Myung and the keyboard parts by Jordan Rudess.
Thanks for sharing this awesome Rob Hubbard track. Great energy and SID bass
One of Hubbards underrated tracks.
This is so cool to hear it again.
I used to play this game on my c64 when i was a kid.
The SID Chip is the most influential chip ever created, period. No discussion.
Absolutely. That being said, many revisionists in the present day will have you believe that the SID is inferior to clearly less powerful 8-bit audio chips of its era because it “only” has 3 channels. To some, it would seem that channels are the be all and end all and not what the audio hardware is capable of producing.
Fond memories. Thanks!
Im just playing this game now.Gets hecktic and mad when you have got the rainbow ripple......just rescued Eddyball. You realise on the main screen you can push joystick up and down while pressing space bar to change the speed of commy saying Iball.
Epic tune. Though it highlights how inconsistent the SID filters and emulation are. I remember it sounding a lot more punchy on the original machine. I was already a Cab Voltaire fan and was blown away when I first heard this.
This was taken from an actual C64 and not an emulator.

This sounds like the original to me - I remember the game well, even completed it, and the music was just epic! The original does sound muggy, like here, so I think you must have imagined it being "more punchy". This track is on a par in terms of muggyness as Star Paws.
Jason Yip Yup. It sounded like this on mine too.
The trouble with your objections is, fuzzface says it sounds punchier on the original machine.
He doesn't say "...than this".
He may have simply meant what he said. That it sounds punchier on the original machine, as opposed to the other machines. The machines other than the original.
His comment doesn't actually refer to this version.
@@anaformiaabalatusdispositi4769 - I've since pulled out my C64, loaded up the game... and it actually sounds worse on the C64 lol. In terms of 'punchiness, there isn't much difference. The version here sounds more crisp.
The astonishing SID chip again!
Ah.. Maff Evans from ye olde Zzap! is here too. Well, you lot were "pocket-savers" for a 13/14 year old lad who would always wonder which game(s) that got over 80 to 85% that month were worth getting, so a heartfelt thanks for the 85 to 89 team for the work they put in ( i stopped following the c64 post 89/90 as women, wine and took up more of my life...etc) .
Anyhoo, this was more playable cause of the music and speech, even though the music only comes together towards the end. Great stuff!
I-Ball!!!
Loved this as a kid. I thought this music was amazing, especialy @ 2:38 when the bass riff comes in. shit I used to rock out with this at high volume.. absolutely genius. have listened to whip blow and I want you many times, but while they are good, there not a patch on this ....
Definitely agree.
Although Rob thinks that this is his worst track, it's my personal epic favorite.
The Filters are not correct here.
@NoisyMaff: Well, part of your screen name is also the nickname of a certain Zzap! reviewer back in the day circa 1988. He was a CV fan, too IIRC...
@NoisyMaff: That may be so, but it's great to have a Zzap! legend from back in the day post on my page. As a kid I read the magazine, then years later one of its reviewers posts comments on my RUclips videos. It's a funny old world sometimes! ;)
@inphanta That's going back a bit, but yep - that's me.
We need an IOS and ANDROID version today!
How much memory did this track take up?
For some reason this song reminds me of Buckethead.
@inphanta Sorry, that was more for the benefit of the (many) who are not as big fans of CV as we are! Also, it depends who you think I am!
Cool game to have for my IPAD... with better graphics, but still with this great track
Had not have.. :(
Great track! I didn't remember it played that choppy, though..... :-|
exactly what I thought... the melody comes out better on an original c64

@NoisyMaff: I knew about those, but cheers for the links. BTW, you're not who I think you are, are you?
If anyone's interested...

Hmmm... played from a real machine? Doesn't sound like it. Sounds like a bad emulation. I never heard it sound like that from a real machine (either C64 or, as I had, a C128). Can't say either CCS64 or Vice64 play it like that either.
BizMarkUK I would just like you to know that there are better things to do than troll RUclips videos.
@@inphantaI'd forgotten this ridiculous hitback (I did indeed have much better things to do than dwell on it) but I fancied listening to this again then noticed again it was the version with the filters and cutoffs all over the place and my original comment still quite obviously stands. This is what it really sounded like: ruclips.net/video/FWIPmfI3I5A/видео.htmlsi=0MERTcWHOAI_fq2l
@@mbvideoselection this video sounds like my machine. You should also know that the filtering the SID vary from machine to machine so this sort of disparity is common. It took nearly an entire decade for you to respond and still be confidently wrong.
Not one of his best tunes, but then again he composed what was asked of him. Didn't fit with the game at all.
It was pinched from Caberet Voltaire.
