Also, to those arguing (insert tank) is better, the Type 10 is in use by the Japanese Self Defense Force. Emphasis on the Defense part. This tank was made to defend Japan, hence the lack of side armor, as all the advanced composite and such is placed in the front as it should be facing the direction the enemies are. The lack of armor was also to keep the Type 10 light so it could travel Japanese infrastructure without the use of specialized trucks, and cross most bridges without issue. It also has advanced communication systems and be supported by other units to make up for its downsides.

And even then the rule is generally to avoid getting hit and keep the front armor pointed at the bad guys. Abrams has never even faced another modern MBT in it's career. In a real war they would drop like flies just like any other countries tanks. It can take a hit from a dude with an RPG or basic recoilless gun to the front armor. It won't survive a flanking IFV with modern anti-armor load outs, modern weapons like the javelin, enemy helicopter fire support, long range drone strikes with ATGMs, etc. More important is any advanced active counter measures and speed.
Arguably an A-10 wouldn't get within miles of this. It's a Japanese Type 10 and is always supported by systems like the Type 87 which would put the A-10 into the ground long before it's in effective range. The A-10 is no longer supported because outside of using it against barely armed insurgents, it's useless in a real conflict. They would never fly it against another modern nation.

Generally speaking hull armor today is about useless. If you aren't the one getting the first shot and landing it, you are generally the one blowing up. We live in an era where dudes with $1000 rockets can bring an Abrams or Merkava to it's knees with repeated blows. Speed, tech, and recon are what decide which tank wins.
