Ever wondered how a 2 stroke engine works?? In this video I show how a piston ported 2 stroke works with a cut away chainsaw engine!! thanks for watching!!
Finally I understand a 2-stroke engine! More complex than a 4 stroke in some ways - not as obvious how it works even though 4S has more components. Many thanks!
The inner workings of 2 cycle engines were always a bit of a mystery to me. This video was a simple and succinct explanation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
That's great to see someone who can explain and demonstrate exactly how the 2strok works. Good on ya mate , keep going with this.Ill sure be watching. THANKS
I've worked with ported and reeded 2 strokes all of my life and this is the best representation that I've ever seen about what goes on in a ported 2 stroke powerplant. Excellent work!
I've been a machanic all my life but in retirement I had an eight way by-pass an ended up on a ventilator for three weeks and when I woke up I learned how to walk and talk, read and wright again. It took me almost five years to get my memories back, I couldn't even recognize my parents let alone my children or grandchildren. Thank you for your in depth videos its helped me more than you could ever know! Love & Blessings Brother...

I'm glad I found you as I was trying to understand why my chainsaw was blowing so much smoke. I didn't know that the lower crankcase chamber was acting like an intake manifold in a two stroke engine. Now I know how chain oil is getting into the combustion chamber. Thank you - count me in as a new fan!
Incredible, I consider myself mechanically inclined. You made this so well. I run a saw everyday and this helped me understand exactly what I’m holding in my hands. Thank you
I understood little until I saw how the transfer of air/fuel from the bottom to top worked. Makes perfect sense. Thanks for sacrificing your engine for educational purposes. Subscribed
I own countless chainsaws, weedeaters and I rode dirt bikes as a kid but not once have I ever known how 2 stroke engines work, thankyou for one excellent tutorial.
Very educational! Finally got a good understanding how a 2 stroke runs and lubricates. Until this video it was driving me nut trying to figure out how a chainsaw lubricates the crankshaft!.
I have built many 4-stroke engines for bikes and cars in the past 20+ years, and you just learned me on 2-strokes in 12 minutes. Thanks a bunch, man. For ones I am blind, and now I see.
Ya know think about the brilliant minds that figured this out ! I do believe that there is Devine intervention with the minds who Invent such amazing machines!!!
Tinman. I don’t think u know how valuable work yr sharing with noobs Teaching and explaining this to folks who are interested Thorough simple and the cut away chainsaw Thanks mate
Nobody discusses the pie shaped weight. Nobody discusses the angles involved in that pie shaped weight. Power stroke feeds rotational energy into that pie. As the pie rotates back around is gives its energy to the piston and rods causing the process to repeat. When we start an engine, we supply the rotational energy into that mass with our right arm. Such a novel concept. Excellent, sir.
you know what? I have been working on, racing, and all the rest on 2 strokes my entire life, and until now never really grasped the transfer port deal until now, excellent video, thanks Bro!
Thank you Tinman. I can rebuild and tune my 2 stroke street bikes but have never had this level of "training". Simple, direct, and to the point. I'm in the middle of a restomod now and will be doing my own porting so this education was timely. I'll go poke around some more on your channel now. Thumbs up.
Very good explanation and simple enough , it's a matter of transference between piston location and direct correlation of the transference of fuel and exhaust ports ! The lower internal case is lubricated by fuel oil premix and it acts as a pressure chamber for fuel oil as it is pressurized on the piston downstroke only to escape through transfer ports to be compressed and burnt on the compression stroke !
a long time ago, I did some research trying to learn how a 2 stroke engine works, and all of the explanations and 2D diagrams just didn't make sense to me. This is why I love cutaways so much, and I finally get it. A lot of this remind me of a rotary (wankel) engine.
I am in an Eternal Love with my Year 2000 Model,Yamaha RX135,5 speed,Two Stroke Motorcycle! Nothing turns my Heart to melt with Love & passion like this Awesome Work of Engineering!
Excellent. I have been working on 2 stroke engines for over 40 yrs and am.self taught and have never learn this aspect before seeing this..the saying u learn something new every day...well thank u I have ...
WOW! Who knew what EXACTLY went on behind the casing! Thank you Tinman for such a detailed explanation and demonstration! I am in awe...I am going to have to watch it once again just to be sure I did not miss anything...JUST AWESOME!
Thanks for putting this together. Looking forward to porting techniques and timing of the piston port to get the increases in horsepower or torque. Can't wait for what's next!
Thank you for sharing this! Best & easiest to understand explanation and demonstration I've seen. And thank you so much for taking the time and effort to think this up, and especially taking the time to make a cutaway model!!!
Brilliant! For years I've never quite had a feel for the 2 stroke engine, even though I knew it in theory. Now I really "feel" it like I do with a 4 stroke engine. Thanks!
Bravo! At last I have got how it works a 2 stroke engine. Thank you teacher! At school they didn't explain thoroughly how the admission and the lubrication is made.
Was working on a 2 stroke blower tonight and wondered how the air fuel mixture got inside the combustion chamber since the piston never dropped below the intake port. Thanks for the wonderful video explaining how this works!
This is great. My five year old son and I have been watching two and four stroke animations (he’s obsessed with mechanics and electronics) on RUclips. I though an animated explanation would be the easiest for him to follow, boy was I wrong. This demonstration leaves them all in the dust! He was taking it all in and understood it. Thanks!
Even though I have rebuilt a crap load of different engines, this video still taught me a ton ! Best video on youtube , nothing else to see here folks,
Thank you so much! You help me to diagnose what was happening with my generator i put diesel fuel on, is small one, 700watts maybe, i thought it was melted but the noises i started to hear before it stopped was all indicating to be the top piston ring that overheated and broke and with this explanation I realized that one piston ring is for compression and the bottom piston ring is for vaccum at the intake stroke. So thank G-d the piston ring seemed to have prevented the whole generator to break apart since after broke, it lose compression and stopped... here in argentina is very expensive everything, wanted to have more power output and a fuel that i thought it was cheaper, i don't go out since a while, now diesel fuel in argentina is a lot more expensive than gasoline so i ended up buying 4 litres of diesel that the only purpose is going to be maybe to start firewood to clean my backyard. Diesel have more power output but at the same time for a generator is not really needed, they can rev up with no major issues to adjust to the electric load and still produce not much heat. But diesel fuel runs very hot, it has energy but over time, so i ended up having more power output but overheating the generator.
This answered so many questions I had and I was previously complelty incorrect on how I thought two strokes worked . Your the man these videos are a life saver
Fantastic super simple to understand explanation i have been riding two strokes moto cross biked for 35 years and its the first time i actually fully understood how a two stroke engine works, thanks for this !! Good Job !
I always get something from your videos! Great informations, great knowledge while staying humble and modest! It doesn't get any more valuable than that. Thank you, much appreciated
This is the best demonstration of how a piston ported two stroke works I've ever seen.
Thanks!!
Absolutely best! Tinman is the man, thank you buddy
And really looking forward to the rest of this series
Yup!
Agreed. Great explanation. I now understand the basic function of a two stroke. I have always wondered.
Absolutely the best demonstration of the inner workings and principles of a 2 stroke engine ever!
I knew nothing about 2 stroke engines prior to watching this. This was incredibly clear. Excellent information and delivery. Thank you!

It was simple and direct. Really great explanation of how it works.
