Basically a hurricane from the west? My prayers for calm, comfort and recovery for my friends and these I do not know in Houston and metroplex.

Sad, but didn’t know that severe storms could turn others into zombies.
Houston has bad geography. Low, flat and wet are a bad combination. Plus being close to the gulf means and endless supply of moist air. Add to that poor zoning and planning. Huge swaths of land are paved for parking. It's a prime real estate for natural disasters. I live in south Florida, which has similar problems, with tons of people moving in every week.

This storm has been officially classed as a derecho, (a.k.a land hurricane,) with winds exceeding 100mph by National Weather Service.

Given how frequently weather causes massive power outages in Texas, why is nothing being done to improve the power grid?
There is little that can be done to protect utilities from a storm like this.
With the water table being so close to the surface, underground utilities are a nightmare to maintain.
The electric providers in Texas are pretty good at keeping trees trimmed back from the aerial lines, but from what I've seen so far, most of the damaged power lines just couldn't withstand the force of the winds from this storm. Almost any area with aerial utility infrastructure would have the same or more damages with power poles and towers blown over.
There is a huge difference between this type of storm and what Texas experienced in 2021 from the extreme cold for the state.
The Valentine day storm outages were due to the power companies cutting back on maintenance to invest their money in "green energy" which caused wind turbines to freeze up and the solar panels were covered in snow and ice, plus we had 4 straight days of solid cloud cover during that winter storm.
As a Texan, what frustrates me is that we have plenty of natural gas to supply our needs, but the federal government offers subsidies on one hand and tough EPA regulations in the other hand, which caused our electric providers to go for the government hand outs and mothball too many of our gas and coal plants.

@@D.A.OhK. Things aren’t going to get better but most can’t see it until it’s too late. Don’t depend on Government or any infrastructure to take care of you. Most won’t survive without electricity.

You could also simply remove the NEXRAD tower and the storms would disappear. Be careful how you invoke His name....He could be wondering why you don't just remove the NEXRAD tower.
