Me too. I'm still doing my research on keeping shrimp. I never had them. Only had one, that came with my plants and it died a while back, I'm guessing of loneliness. I'm now building the environment for cherry shrimp I want to keep. It should be ready by Sept.

To be completely honest I didn’t do that much research at first and two goldfish died and as soon as that happened I did tons of research since and now I have happy healthy fish.
The pet stores that sell all kinds of pets are no help whatsoever. Most of my knowledge came from fb groups, reading research papers and watching RUclipsrs like fishtory (an absolute godsend tbh) here to learn more about the fish that I keep and how to keep them properly. Occasionally I get info from people in person who specialize in and have tons of experience of actually keeping fish in healthy happy condition.

So many things wrong with this scenario. Pet shop staff should always ask about the aquarium the fish will be living in - size, other fish in the tank, water parameters, filtration... and explain the temperament and requirements of the fish they are considering selling to the customer. I wonder if the pet shop employee even knows what brackish means.
Yes, I have worked in a pet shop, and I never once sold a fish to someone who said they hadn't set the tank up yet.
No, I do not Tik Tok. I refuse to watch stupid people doing stupid things in an attempt to become rich and famous.
Since I found Alexander and Fishtory, I have stopped watching many other RUclips channels devoted to tropical fishkeeping. Outstanding content, well researched, informative, and all the fun I need!

So true about the employees... I bet you are correct about them not knowing what brackish even is. Thanks for your vote of confidence and support, but I make mistakes too, I'm just always going to correct those mistakes in the pinned post ...or take a video down if it's agreegiously wrong. It's all we can do as humans with failings. I hope you have an awesome weekend!

I have such a pit in my stomach from watching this and knowing that so many more "ornamental" aquatic animals suffer this fate after shortform social media has entered.
    It was bad enough before.
What I'd think was cool was if more of those people would collab with really knowledgeable hobbyists and have the hobbyist just scream STAAAHP at every impulse and explain why the content creator is right or wrong, before they actually act on it.
That could be a funny AND educational series of shorts!

(and for the PEOPLE, well a lot of people DO care to not have things die and will feel wretched, or that they messed up, failed. they may also never try the hobby again. kids may be traumatized. it's just SO BAD.)

I learned so much from your videos and the father fish ones, BEFORE I got my first tank, set it up, cycled and then introduced my first betta to the tank… the avalanche effect got me, so now I have 6 tanks with different fish, primarily focusing on guppies (endler and normal) and bettas, because I love how they look and behave… my first betta even learned tricks to move through rings I have in the tank and also is very curious when I go and just look at her, she likes to look back at me… but yes, do your research Before you get your fish… I know impulse buys are common, even if you do that, you still can research and do your best to create a suitable environment for the fish you will be taking care of. Good luck to all who enjoy the hobby and Thank you Alexander for all the effort you put into providing knowledge for people to treat fish they way they deserve

I had a betta in what was probably a .5 gallon "tank" as a young teen and loved him and obviously he didnt live more than a few months because i had no idea how to properly care for him. Fast forward almost 20 years and when my own kids wanted goldfish i did months of research before agreeing. I still made mistakes along the way, but i corrected them and my fish were able to thrive. It took me two years of keeping goldfish to feel like i could handle a community tank. I now have multiple and am raising fry. I love animals and didnt want to make them suffer from my own ignorance so i was very careful and researched every single aspect of my set ups. I still feel shame what younger me put my betta through out of ignirance. I cannot imagine monetizing that ignorance in this way if you had any respect for the life that was lost.

I'm sure the store where he purchased the puffer was not much help. No mention of using dechlorinator. I worked at one of these stores, and have many horror stories. There are people that would come in to buy a baby Oscar and a few neon tetras just start a tank. There's always the people that want to buy a Percula clownfish, and don't even have a saltwater tank. They just want to have Nemo in a little plastic mini tank for a while. If it dies, no big deal. They will just buy another one. There have been instances of the storm employees not asking about the customer's current setup, etc. Many times these stores have a guarantee on the fish, so the people will get a free replacement because of a "mystery death", and the same thing will happen.

The only way to combat this kind of "content" is for everybody to outright ignore it (applies to far more than pets). Sadly, most people don't even realize/care how the big tech algorithms shovel them sensationalized "content" in an attempt to get them addicted. Rapid AI development is only going to exacerbate the issues. Education like you've been doing helps and is about all that can be done, but it's certainly an uphill battle. A big part of the blame lies on the chain pet stores as well... 99.9% of the people who walk into that fish section aren't equipped to deal with an advanced fish like that, the store itself and the employees likely aren't equipped to deal with it.

  • @chevyfish4028
    @chevyfish4028 4 дня назад +1

In this day and age with technology at our fingertips, there is no excuse for lack of research.
He bought the fish before even setting up the tank. I didn't see any dechlorinator added to neutralize the tap water of chlorine/chloramines so the green spotted puffer could breath without the chemicals frying its gills.
Its water was slowly poisoning him as the tank had to go through its cycle to stabilization with the puffer in it while the ammonia continued to rise to deadly levels. Ten to one, the ammonia level was off the charts. Even without a test kit, the guy could have brought a water sample in to the store for a free water test.
As soon as the guy said, "What shall we name him," the mean side of me said, "Name him...Dead In A Few Weeks."
He is learning as he goes but at the expense of the lives and health of his acquired "pets."
We all have had fish die from our lack of knowledge back in the days before internet because it was unavailable or hard to find or the store selling it had no idea. But, research is just a click away nowadays and there are so many detailed explanations, how-tos and pictures of the fish available to research along with people'spersonal experiences through online fish forums which are readily accessible. For those without internet access or a phone, there are plenty of libraries that have internet access to research and learn. Just my two cents.
P.S. Personally, the videos for views is sickening when it involves the suffering of anything.

A couple weeks ago I was turned on by my Petco chick that they had 'pea puffers', and I was super excited to come back after I'd prepped an (existing) tank for them, but I looked at them, and then the label, and that was no pea puffer; after looking up the specific care (and size, and the brackish thing), I thought nope, can't do it. My Petco chick is pretty smart on fish, too; but she was mistaken on this.

frankly i was shocked he showed a box store and it had puffers. i have NEVER seen this. not pea puffers OR any of the others. i was shocked to see a killifish (those neon green ones) in a petco recently.
i impulse bought one of the less aggressive ones, and my dude is so frickin awesome. also, in the wild they eat a lot of bugs. so you can drop in anything that dies or that you had to smack into oblivion. he had trouble with a bottle fly but kept at it like a hound from hell. ever take waaaay too big a bite of food, can barely close your mouth let alone chew or swallow? lol this was him. i was worried for a few minutes and kept eyes on him instead of going to bed. eventually he worked his mouth closed and got it down like a snake.
he was SO skittish when i first got him but he's learning that 'THE HAND' drops treats and foods. i also make sure to move reeeeally slow to not spook him. he used to hit the surface like a piranna and be halfway across the tank, i guess as a safety fleeing. now, he doesn't go so far and sometimes opts just to mostly stuff his face. i love their little trap door mouths.
      TLDR;
love puffers, only seen them at LFS though. but now love kilifish and DID see one once at a box store and got 'im.

I'm new to the hobby but I wouldn't bring in a fish I know nothing about I'm grateful for the channels I found that have guided me. Mind you I only have Guppies, and thought they would be easy(where a lot actually goes into making sure they have the right conditions to thrive) where yes they're more forgiving but they're still living creatures and it was not as easy as my impulse decision to take them home. it was a real oh shit moment and I had to research how to correct this so they don't struggle.
What I learned in a short time is you need to not just jump into the hobby but you need to set up the tank before you bring anything home and make sure your prepared for what it may need. Essentially you need to set up a tank that's a home for fish not a death trap. you have to know that conditions are constantly changing in the water and basically you need to set up a mini ecosystem for them so there is a balance which does not come in a week
i think people just need to stop misleading people like that. I think also in the hobby I don't think a lot of aquarium stores advise people properly either. and shouldn't sell a fish like that without talking to the person and asking them questions like the ones you asked.

He would probably have to even get plastic surgery so nobody would be able to recognize him. Another idea little for fetch pitch here I don’t know if you’d be interested in this or not, but it might be kind of interesting to take a video like this maybe not even mention it but redo it but do it the right way because yeah P puffer is not the easiest fish for a beginner for someone who’s never done this kind of stuff before, but taking into account somebody who has no idea what they’re doing and say Just like this guy started but do everything the right way I don’t know… I hope I see you at Fish Tober fest here in Portland. I'm sure if you read this Tic Tacer comments. You'll see people telling him the same thing you are talking about here. But as with most social media people thirsty for attention, it's all about the views and clicks. For many so called "influencers" it's an escape from their lackluster or lonely lives. You'll also see many social media channels will have that post of oh I'm going to quit, I'm having a very bad day, or this and that. While some can be true and serious. I'm just do it for more CON-TENT. Look At Me Look At Me!

If it isn't showing up for you, to find it, go to > Account> manage all history> Interactions> comments and replies. Mine has been doing this for a couple of weeks now.

i hate tiktok and refuse to use it. unfortunately, some of this garbage gets reposted here as shorts, or on instagram. anyhow, it IS possible to do a short that is worthwhile. you just REALLY have to plan. i watch fish stuff and some weightlifting stuff. there is almost always *something* you can toss in a very short span, a tidbit, a fact, something cool or educational. but like i said, you have to be super intentional to get it in that short window.
this dummy, if he'd learned so much, he could have flashed an overlay of text with keywords like:
    pH
    salt, for brackish water
    type of food
    ammonia
    nitrates
    tank size
    CYCLE TANK
and people could pause on it. at the very least, your eyes can take in keywords like that even pretty fast. and it works on other videos too.
idk if i can watch any more of these if you do a series. it's too upsetting. mostly these days the petshops and fish places will ask you if you have a cycled or established tank. and if anyone saw him buy a puffer and a 1.5g, they'd SAY something. so he willfully ignored employees, and probably lied and said the tank was for something else. :(. but yeah, it hurts too much to see stuff like this. i love your channel, and your message here is totally valid and IMPORTANT. but i'll just have to skip them so i don't go berserk. gotta manage the ol' mental state, you know?
ps (i keep wanting to call you Tory. like fish-Tory, fish-history, double play on words haha. and every time you say alexander it's like who what? 😂 )
*would love to see you do some puffer keeping vids. or less commonly covered fish on YT like congo tetras.* for some reason there just aren't enough vids on either of these. sure, a couple short things but like.... idk it's insufficient. not so many vids showing tank setups and their behavior and swimming patterns etc etc. ((if not for recently seeing congos in a fish store that i'll not go back to because it was BARREN and the few fish they had were the smallest imaginable for sale, and colorless... i would NEVER have known how monstrously big they can get!!! no joke these seemed like 4" fish! or bigger.))

Thank you. I've debated covering puffers, but I almost don't want to encourage people to want anything more than about 5 inch max length species. (Unless you really have the dedication, bank roll and time, they are more work than a dog or cat for proper care.)
But ill think about how I could responsibly show and educate about them. Thanks.

You're probably correct. It kind of makes me laugh when it's like someone saying just a word oddly, so they know everyone will comment lol...but this is blood pressure changing type bait

@@Fishtory Yeah I just report posts for cruelty to animals whenever I see stuff like this, and avoid interacting beyond that. I'm not going to reward someone with engagement for deliberately being dense for the sake of more interaction.

You're posting this video to get engagement from everyone that knows better and needs to share it. Clicks are also on your mind. Seems a little hypocritical. Everyone starts somewhere and everyone kills fish in this hobby eventually.
If you want better views on shorts, then maybe you could learn from that guy. It clearly isn't the information that he's sharing that's getting the views, but how he's sharing it. Be the change you want to see. Make the better content, don't just complain about it.
Sorry if that comes off negatively. I know you could make informative, anti-brainrot, short-form content if anyone could.

90% of my content is long form highly detailed peer review academic sourced type work... and also 90% of that gets very very little engagement even when dressed up or given clicky thumbnails ( Unless I totally mislead the topic lol).
While I appreciate the feedback, I'm wondering if you watched this all, because I also said " here I am feeding into the whole cycle. To point it out and being a hypocrit, showing this spectacle for clicks". So it was definitely not lost on me.
