***** there's quite a long set of videos on youtube about making the t rex. quite an amazing animatronic! very interesting, too, if you're into that kind of behind-the-scenes making-of stuff like i am. :)
***** A really, really brilliant combination of animatronics, prosthetics, costumes and early CGI (the *costly* kind, that is) - some 90s movies famously used that combination to great effect ... given that the right director was at the helm - namely Steven Spielberg or James Cameron. They usually used CGI in dynamic wide shots and animatronics in closeups or whenever some sort of credible interaction between human actor and creature was required. Well, of course a bit later there were also movies like Independence Day (which still mainly relied on practical effects and made use of CGI almost exclusively for things like explosions or multiplying Alien fighters), the Fifth Element etc. but I guess it's safe to say that Spielberg and Cameron (plus the masters of visual magic at ILM) pioneered those techniques. And then came the Star Wars Special Editions and prequels... oh George... such a great visual sense but such little sense for the right measure...
+PeKena LarVa Or Doug Trumbull's own post-"2001" tome poem, "Silent Running" with its "drones", Huey, Dewey and Louie: certainly the best early non-humanoid practical robots I can immediately recall. (And the American Airlines space freighters/forests were unbelievably beautiful, for then and now!) But I have to take a second look at the rules, one of the most amazing practical effects films of all time is Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" with its actual practical zero gravity scenes comprising a surprisingly small percentage of the film ... but wowzers, what a spectacular percentage!
The Thing is in the perfect spot and proof positive that more film makers need to use more practical effects. I recently sat down with my 15-year old and her mouth was wide open during most of it. At one point she looked at me and said, "I didn't know all THIS would be going on."

@@FreakieFan right. The mind behind the scene where the bone turns in to a space ship was done by an Italian guy. Antonio Margheriti. A genius of practical and lighting effects those days.
I knew The Thing had to be here. So glad for most of these choices. My only qualm is not including Star Wars. Also, if the list had been made sometime this month, Gravity would certainly have to be here.
I love Nolan, he is badass in every aspect. Love the fact he use more practical effects than CGI, and it looks more beliveable than most cgi these days. Cant wait for Interstellar :O
Insant like when The Thing got #1, it's the perfect example of why they should always use makeup effects instead of CGI in horror films. It makes the horror way more immersive when it looks real.
I couldn't be happier with your number one choice...made in 1981, fergodsakes, and it STILL looks fantastic, beating most CGI laden recent films...long live Carpenter's amazing masterpiece.
My dad worked on Jurassic Park, he is in fact responsible for that cup of water XD I even see him at 7:49 standing in the crowd. That bit was shot on stage 16 at Warner Brothers.
Your surprised The Thing got no 1? The thing in Sfx was no where near Jurassic park, it was good, and the effects were pretty good, but The Thing is The Thing, there is no way it wouldn’t be on this list
Hellraiser where Frank comes back to life from a drop of blood, they made an anatomically correct wax model of him and melted it, then showed it in reverse as Frank coming back to life. Then there is the scene where he is chained up by pin head and his face is stretched out by fishing hooks.
I watched the original "Hellraiser" the other day for the first time in 15 years or so. The effects still held up well, except maybe for the hooks in the skin effect. All the rest though were good. Slimy Frank was still nauseating.
I was thinking of "The Thing" the entire way through the list. By number 2 I was upset because, usually, what the viewer thinks is number 1 won't be number 1. But then you showed "The Thing" and I audibly squealed with joy. :)
Totally! Only issue I take with it is the fact that they keep setting it on fire, only to put it out right away. Also it is strange that they have flamethrowers just lying around. Apart from that stuff, though... :D
ThatGuyYouArent2 I always imagined that the flamethrowers where there originally as some sort of means to defrost things or to melt snow or some silly thing like that.
Acting, Directing, Pacing, Plot, Atmosphere, Effects, memorable score... I think the Thing is one of the best horror films ever made, hands down. It has aged remarkably well and stands up almost as well today as the day it was released. Its one of my favorites. It sucks that it seems to be overlooked by most people. It seems to most people these days that a horror movie=Paranormal Activity/cheap jump scare.... To those people I say; Fuck you!
To be honest, I agree with this list almost completely 100%. The top 3 are definitely right on. Another good entry would have been the Terminator movies, especially Terminator 2. The T1000 was done with CG effects, but almost everything was practical, and the movie definitely still holds up today.
I will just say it here, Star Wars on Blu Ray is way less spectacular than it was on DVD. Everything looks like plastic and it becomes really apparent during some scenes.
***** The original series movies like Wrath of Kahn, yes, no CJI, old school special effects, but pretty much everything more recent including the TNG movies are also loaded with CJI
digimonFTW22456 Thats because Lucas bloated everything with replacement CGI effects that just destroy the visceral reality of the original 1977 version. Lucas really doesnt get it thats he's destroyed what made his creation so real.
Saving Private Ryan should be on the list. The practical effects of the injuries and deaths were as subtle as they was horrifying. Oh god.... that knife. *throws up*
e3102bete If you mean tarantino i put him more in the scorsesee, and coppola category. They're great directors, but they make more....for a lack of a better term....violent movies.
***** When you mentioned Star Wars, I remembered the latest Star Wars episode directed by J.J Abrams. Which I expected to have an excessive use of lens flares xD
All I can say is they got it right for The Thing being at the No1 Position in this video for being one of the most scary and disgusting and disturbing gross movie's of all time, a movie that used no CGI what so ever but still creeps people out today and can still make some a little queasy and wanna throw up, and that is all thanks to the amazing special effects team in puppeteers and animatronics and makeup effects.... I can remember once when I tricked one of my ex girlfriends some years back into watching The Thing with me, but I told her that the movie is tame and its a good movie, but she is really screamish and is easily grossed out, but also she hates cruelty to animals to, so we sat there watching it.... and the part where in the dog pen and the dog's face splits open and then the dog's skull drops off and all these tentacles come whipping out spraying slime and shit everywhere and then wrapping its tentacles around the other dogs choking them and shit.... I swear my ex girlfriend just freaked the fuck out and started heaving and she got up and ran into the kitchen and started throwing up inside the kitchen bin.... I swear I was laughing my fucking ass off so hard, and then after throwing up she came back in screaming at me saying.... YOU FUCKING BASTARD!!!.... HOW COULD YOU FUCKING TRICK ME LIKE THAT???.... TURN THAT FUCKING MOVIE OFF RIGHT NOW!!!.... YOUR AN ASSHOLE!!!.... but I couldn't stop laughing my ass off, but in the end I had to turn the movie off cause she wouldn't come back in the room till I did turn it off LOL! XD
Something about how they thought to include bursting pustules of yellow slime inside the greenish tentacles being pulled out of the guy's neck just put's me over the edge. And then that tongue! By that point I was determined to make it to the end of the movie just to see how disgusting it could get.
Andrew Cunningham yeah man, it was great how they thought all that up and made it happen, when it comes to horror movies that use no CGI what so ever and use special effects makeup puppetry and animatronics and stuff, The Thing is one of my all time favorite movies for that genre.
***** If you do it really well you can get away with it for backgrounds and stuff like that, but it's just not good enough to keep characters from looking goofy to me.
Talking about non-CGI, JJ Abrams (director of the newcoming Star Wars VII) has announced he will use the least amount of CGI possible and keep the old ways, with miniatures and stuff, just like the original trilogy.
***** Dude, Abrams is an hardcore fan of the original trilogy (just watch some Lost episodes, there's ton of easter eggs and references). If he says he's gonna do it that way, that's because he is going to. I trust the guy.
Movies like "The Fly" and "The Thing" are fantastic examples of how to do a remake correctly. Not to mention that their special effects are phenomenal.
I was just going to say as they were counting it down, "If The Thing isn't number one, never mind even on this list, WatchMojo should be whipped and put out of business" Good one. :) The Thing still packs a visceral punch that makes you queasy and brings back the nightmares you had as a kid. CGI CANNOT create this same terror and realistic, gut churning horror you felt watching this and many other movies on this list. I would have cut out about three on here and replaced with James Cameron movies like Aliens and the Terminators and also the grand daddy of them all, Star Wars.
The Thing was one of the only movies that ever scared me. All of the alien's forms were so terrifying, and the fact that all of it was real makes it even more scary.
The Thing is one of the greatest horror films ever made hands down! Effects, acting, pacing, plot, atmosphere... everything is perfect in that movie! I think it is unfairly overlooked over by 'the general movie going audience' which sucks... But I totally love it. I also love a lot of James Cameron's stuff, I mean the Terminator is classic now c'mon! But he relies too much on CGI now. Alien and Aliens are amazing films. Truly genre defining. But I am still surprised to this day that David Fincher, the man who directed Seven and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, made Aliens 3 which in my opinion was one of the most disappointing and terrible sequels ever made. Anyway, I digress. I think this is a good list!
Barry Allen the problem with practical effects these days is that the audience does hardly appreciate them anymore, especially when we're talking about stunts. for example if in 2015 you had a movie with insane car crashes and dangerous work with stuntmen involved most viewers would think it was done via cgi anyway.
Willi Tomko Well now that mad max is out which was a beautifully done visual masterpiece. maybe some people who make movies will realize and think maybe we should put more work in our movies and use practical effects more so than cgi.
Willi Tomko I think you are forgetting all the people here who have complained about CGI. Obviously, there are a lot of knowledgeable film fans who know and appreciate the differences between CGI and practical. Also, that number is growing thanks to popular online film critics such as Nostalgia Critic who have compared practical and CG effects in their videos.
glad to see The Thing in first place...far better than all the CGI shit made today, a real classic! :) I would also include Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, one of best animatronics EVER created! a truly masterpiece of special FX great choices anyways :D
I think people in general got tired of CGI, they just don't give as much "magic" as the traditional stuff. It was fun for a while but now that entire movies are shot on green or blue screens, it's just not the same.
I think the big problem is that it simply doesn't look good. We were all wowed by Jurassic Park; I couldn't wait to see what CGI could do in ten years. However, the ugly truth is that CGI hasn't improved much. It still looks horribly fake when it is front and center. In fact, no movie that relied heavily on CGI looks even half as good as Jurassic Park. Generally, I find it as convincing as the drawn in scenes from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (while simultaneously being significantly less charming).
Rumor has it that J.J. Abrams is going to try to recapture the feel of the original Star Wars trilogy by using practical effects in Episode VII instead of the CGI porn of the prequels.
Everett Freeze if you like older effects you should definitely check out some of the 70's disaster movies, especially The Towering Inferno. it's about a burning skyscraper. they built a 70-foot-tall "miniature" and set it on fire. they also used a lot of explosion and fire effects. the tower looks so real.
TheChainsawboy My favorite is that side shot in Empire Strikes Back of the Millennium Falcon flying through the asteroid field when the model is swinging side to side.
***** Not in the original trilogy. They had to rely heavily on practical effects because CGI wasn't up to par in the '70s-80's. Hell, Star Wars set the standard on how special effect's were done back in the day.
lltheFacell and even today. StarWars in general both prequels and OT have some of the best CG and practical effects available, but I think their practical effects hold up the best, the spaceships in StarWars OT STILL look better than most if not all other spaceships I see in movies or TV shows.
You know what should've been Number 1? Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, honest to god I can't for the life of me explain how the bloody hell they made that thing look and move the way it did.
Agreed. It saddens me that the first major use of CG visuals in movies is the best. Hopes were pushed so high and yet decades later we get sloppy BS like the Scorpion King. Instead of inspiring people to push the limits of reality in movies, JP just made people lazy. Very depressing...
kmaru80 wait wait wait wait guys. What about Avatar? Or Star wars episode 2/3? Star Trek? Promethius (even though the movie was shit). There's still a good cgi heavy movie every once in awhile.
American Werewolf In London, and Cronenberg's The Fly are my two favourite films for practical effects... Actually, and The Thing, thats pretty incredible.
Watching this video made me realize how awesome movies were back then. Even if some movies were really cheesy, there’s a charm in them. Especially with these effects.
vincentpol no, i am saying that Star Wars should have been here. i like this list, but Star Wars should have been here. you cant denie that industrial light and magic are geniuses.
NunuInc No exactly, that's why videos like these are bullshit and is nothing more than an intern's afternoon work of combining a few of his own personal favorites. Instead of calling this the top 10 of , it should be the top 10 of of person . These things are nothing more than to attract views without actual content. So you really shouldn't look too much into the credibility of these videos.
Another thing about Matrix: Reloaded, was that the ENTIRE FREEWAY was made specifically for the film in a desert. It was 3 miles long and was torn down after filming.
While you are correct about the freeway being made for the film, you are wrong about the location. It was not filmed in a desert. It was filmed in Alameda, California which is in the San Francisco Bay Area right next to the city of Oakland and is far from being a desert.
Several of the shots described as "practical effects" here are a mix of physical effects, CGI and compositing (which is effectively a visual / optical / post production effect, not a "practical" / physical effect). And they wouldn't work at all without the compositing. At least they got #1 right, but sadly they didn't show the funniest bit, which is when the severed head grows legs and starts running around. Also very definitely missing from the list: the melting faces at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
They even said on the Matrix chase scene that the actors were composited later on. By definition that is not 'practical', practical is an in camera effect.
Cybopath right, and also they placed CGI cars on the road to fill up the high way. they filmed at a lower speeds and fewer cars. it was nice work but for practical work, I don't think so.
I think the effects in the thing are still holding up without any hint of cgi they even used a man with severed limbs, and some illusionist tricks to make all the effects possible. Thank you Rob, nicely done.
Robocop, Predator and many other 80s action movies qualify. Back then they were using real guns loaded with blanks (and sometimes with actual bullets, I think - the jungle shootout scene from Predator was no joke), not props. Hollywood movie directors certainly do have lots of money to still use traditional effects, so why do they rely on cheap CGI? On the contrary, Japanese movie directors are almost never using CGI, because that's their tradition.
Your right on that point.lets see the remastered star trek its like your watching an intro to a 2001 video game and back when some of these films were made when Puppets and make up where phenomenal.
I have to say American Werewolf in London to me was always a great special effects movie. Considering the movie was made so long ago and the transformation of the werewolf happened in a very well lit area and didn't rely on darkness to conceal the effects so they looked better. But all time best practical effects has to go to Evil Dead I and II. Sam Rami and Bruce Campbell revealed a lot of the secrets of the movies effects in the commentary on the DVD. The reason for it is because it was done on such a low budget. Things like when the black clouds rolling in over the moon is really shot through an Aquarium with water and they dumped ink into the water. Just a genius film.
That's actually an effects device called a "Cloud Tank", which was a technique used in all films before the advent of CGI replaced that technique completely...
Possessed Furby meh...inception is actually nothing new (and ludicrous when you get into the layers), and I'm convinced dark knight is just pity value - and after the insult that was Batman Begins I sure as hell was done with the re-franchise
+Possessed Furby Inception confused me! what was it? they had to dream another person's dream to find them and save them or something? i don''t know! i only have a "c average" brain!
Hell yeah! When I saw the title of this video I was hoping they would at least give "The Thing" and honorable mention, let alone the #1 spot. Without a doubt my favorite horror movie. The special effects were far ahead of its time and I still get chills sometimes when I watch it.
I like the Queen Alien from the second movie best because as well as the kick ass design which took the original alien design up a notch it also had that womb thing which looked awesome as hell, especially one it gets some grenades blasted into it!
remember seeing The Thing back in 1982 when you literally went into the theatre without know a Thing about the movie, no pun intended, the trailer didn't give away spoilers so when you went into that theatre and shit started to hit the fan everyone in there was freaking out, one of those movie moments that I remember like it was yesterday
AValveFanboy That as may be, but it was still overused. And prosthetic Bolg looked immense! Miniatures and prosthetic work will always look better than CGI because it's all real. The Hobbit just looks touched up to the extreme, almost cartoon
AValveFanboy I agree with you for most of it, but the forge scene at the end of the desolation of Smaug has noticeably worse CGi liquid effects than Terminator 2. Now, The liquid terminator is impressive, but if you look closely, it is slightly dated. It is hidden well, however, by good camera angles. That gold in the forge, however...
The "baby' from Eraserhead is still one of those most stunning effects I've seen. Why wasn't The Exorcist in there? Dick Smith's make up made the movie. Dawn of the Dead (the original) had numerous effects moments that were pretty wild back in '78. I would also add Evil Dead 2, Re-Animator, Altered States, and the Road Warrior. The all made the best with what limited technology they had and still turned out movies that are infinetely better than anything that people with triple their brudget can make nowadays. Less is sometimes more...whereas more just creates lazy and uninspired movies.
The Thing (1982) is a masterpiece. Amazing how it was unfairly panned when it was released as it is truely one of the best suspense/sci-fi movies made. John Carpenter went in a totally different direction than the original "The Thing From Another World" and made his version a classic.
Gonz Junior Okay..You are an idiot. By asking if the T-rex was real he ment " was it a puppet or CGI" Seriously! Dont make drunk comments! You'll look like an idiot.
Im surprised they didnt mention Terminator 2... mostly CGI was used on T-1000 in there...but for example to make Sarahs dream scene where city goes on fire...they actually made a whole model just to blow it up... the same goes to T-800 when he was shot by a swat in Cyberdine.. Im not talking about T-800s endosceleton that is masterpiece by itself...i mean lack of CGI and all of those effects and tricks did their job making this sciense fiction movie tolook so realistic
Cybopath No, no it shouldn't. You must not have ever seen The Thing. Which you should, because it's still way more tense than anything that passes for suspense/horror these days.
OgreSamanosuke John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favourite films and it should be on the list but there is more to practical effects than just animatronics. There are scenes in T2 people don't even realize are effect shots and if the Freaking Matrix Reloaded gets a mention T2 should.
OgreSamanosuke The Thing is a great movie... its a classic horror movie but you can see that it became old... you cant say the same about T2 even tough it was made 23 years ago it still looks like a descent modern movie..even better.
Practical needs to make a big come back. Just use CGI to clean it up around the edges where need be. I zone out during these hour long CGI cartoon destruction scenes at the end of movies now.
I am a film director and I'm working on a low-budget full-length film . The challenge is not only the low budget, but I aim to use NO CGI at all.

The 80s: A gold mine for epic movies in general.
The Thing is a class film. A good plot , great script, great effects , actors turning in a great performance.
What is there not to like about it?
I agree, its such a masterpiece. The way the story is made on relying trust and who's the 'thing' or not is one the best plot ever.

Your surprised The Thing got no 1? The thing in Sfx was no where near Jurassic park, it was good, and the effects were pretty good, but The Thing is The Thing, there is no way it wouldn’t be on this list
You can't say that a movie is the best at using practical effects when the majority of it is CGI
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 majority, no. half, yes
100% of perfect practical effects is still better than half
@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 ?
The Fly is an incredibly sad and disturbing movie but it has awesome effects.
Hellraiser where Frank comes back to life from a drop of blood, they made an anatomically correct wax model of him and melted it, then showed it in reverse as Frank coming back to life. Then there is the scene where he is chained up by pin head and his face is stretched out by fishing hooks.
Yeah dude, a scene on either Hellraiser 1 or 2 should be recognized for sure.
Bar none the Thing makes me cringe!
Just watched a couple of HRs tonight and couldn't agree more. Frank's rebirth deserves honorable mention. Still, hard to argue with "The Thing"
that's amazing!!! i always thought it was shoot on stop motion, but that reverse footage thing is even better!!
I watched the original "Hellraiser" the other day for the first time in 15 years or so. The effects still held up well, except maybe for the hooks in the skin effect. All the rest though were good. Slimy Frank was still nauseating.
Before I clicked on this vid I said, "If The Thing (1982) isn't on this list, I am going to shit a brick."
bingo
whenever i think of amazing practical movie effects, it is the exact scene here from The Thing
Dave Jordan
I would have gone with the dog going through the roof in the kennel.
when i was 10 i remember how the ting terrified me ....
Shitted bricks play havoc on the sewer system.
Same here - Its head and shoulders above above anything else - Rob Bottin is the man!
This is your best list, hands down.
Bill Devo Devo?
For entertainment value, yes. But they left out Terminator, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones.
I was thinking of "The Thing" the entire way through the list. By number 2 I was upset because, usually, what the viewer thinks is number 1 won't be number 1.
But then you showed "The Thing" and I audibly squealed with joy. :)
I love that fucking movie. So innovative, and genuinely creepy. What a classic :D
A lot of these older movies impress the hell out of me for what they were able to accomplish for the time periods they were made.
Predator had it all...They made him invisible by dressing him in a mirrored tile suit.
One of my all time favourite scenes is the werewolf turning scene in An American werewolf in London. Absolutely love it!
To be honest, I agree with this list almost completely 100%. The top 3 are definitely right on.
Another good entry would have been the Terminator movies, especially Terminator 2. The T1000 was done with CG effects, but almost everything was practical, and the movie definitely still holds up today.
Star Wars should surely have been here. All of the ships and aliens were miniatures and puppets rather than cgi and they still look great.
I will just say it here, Star Wars on Blu Ray is way less spectacular than it was on DVD. Everything looks like plastic and it becomes really apparent during some scenes.
Don't know about Star Trek. Haven't seen that on Blu-Ray yet. I assume it is the same deal.
Oh god.... that knife.
*throws up*
first came hitchcock. Then Kubrick. Then Spielberg. Now we have Nolan. These are the greatest directors through the decades
MasterAqua Keymaster I kinda feel like QT should be in the list too. The way he does dialogue and characters is amazing.
e3102bete
If you mean tarantino i put him more in the scorsesee, and coppola category. They're great directors, but they make more....for a lack of a better term....violent movies.
MasterAqua Keymaster Meh, QT was a good screenplayer. I don't really like him as a director. One of my most favorite Tarantino films was Kill Bill.
***** When you mentioned Star Wars, I remembered the latest Star Wars episode directed by J.J Abrams. Which I expected to have an excessive use of lens flares xD
MasterAqua Keymaster Dont forget Ridley Scott ;-)
Andrew Cunningham mm. Lb
You dont say ;)
Ilovediamonds470 I think I know why your ex broke up with you. :)
and now let's all thank stan winston ;)
Yannick Bislin It's a shame, I feel like hollywood's animatronic era died when he did. Sad really.
I miss the non-CGI days.
***** yeah because everything was really there! the actual monsters were not real, but they sure did look real!
***** If you do it really well you can get away with it for backgrounds and stuff like that, but it's just not good enough to keep characters from looking goofy to me.
***** amen brother
Talking about non-CGI, JJ Abrams (director of the newcoming Star Wars VII) has announced he will use the least amount of CGI possible and keep the old ways, with miniatures and stuff, just like the original trilogy.
***** Dude, Abrams is an hardcore fan of the original trilogy (just watch some Lost episodes, there's ton of easter eggs and references). If he says he's gonna do it that way, that's because he is going to. I trust the guy.
Nothing can trump the Thing its 30 yrs old and decimates everything after it. Just watched it today. Ha
Starwars
Almost 40 years old now.
@@dancepiglover forgot i wrote this. Yep still stands against time for me.
the thing looks scary af, must watch
+D3m0nator same xD
+D3m0nator You won't regret it. The movie is super tense and the effects are perfect. They didn't even show you the head spider.
Movies like "The Fly" and "The Thing" are fantastic examples of how to do a remake correctly. Not to mention that their special effects are phenomenal.
+D3m0nator dont bother with the 2011 one tho
The Thing is my favorite horror film of all time. You won't be disappointed.
I prefer practical over cgi it gives the movie character
Yeah I agree
Barry Allen than you will love Mad Max: Fury Road! this movie is fucking amazing! over 80% of the effects is practical!
The Blob 1988, had realy cool Special effects too
The THING! YEAH!
glad to see The Thing in first place...far better than all the CGI shit made today, a real classic! :)
I would also include Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, one of best animatronics EVER created! a truly masterpiece of special FX
great choices anyways :D
Wait u mean 1986 version right ?
Thomas Fernandez
obviously! :P
the old versión one is just a puppet! XD
but the 86 Audrey animatronic is PRODIGIOUS :D
Anon Nymous The effects in Where the Wild Things Are are a combination of the two, and IMO looks really great.
i was talking to my friend about this very thing, its so true. the older effects are magic, all CGI just doesn't look as good.
I think Star Wars should be on this list.
TheChainsawboy yeah like how the hell did they not even mention it?
TheChainsawboy Yeah! Those effects were fucking awesome!
Is that the talking plant?
It was directed by Frank Oz, Jim Henson's longtime friend and collaborator.
He had the whole Henson workshop and George Lucas' assets behind him.
Jurassic Park still being more realistic than all the others so many years later...
There's still a good cgi heavy movie every once in awhile.
zeph94
it's a perfect balance of Practical / CG
Finally someone gets it
American Werewolf In London, and Cronenberg's The Fly are my two favourite films for practical effects...
Actually, and The Thing, thats pretty incredible.
Yeah that scene from the thing is one of the most disgusting and realistic of all time, every time i almost puke (in a good way)
The thing was really scary dude.
Gursagar Ishar
IS really scary.
Zevin X I didnt find the thing scary... though that's probably from me and my friends muting it and voicing it over ourselves with random crap.
Caesar454 Blasphemy!
Watching this video made me realize how awesome movies were back then. Even if some movies were really cheesy, there’s a charm in them. Especially with these effects.
To this day The Thing _still_ scares the shit out of me.
what no Star Wars?
the original trilogy had alot of epic special effects
Oh gjeez, are you suggesting that videos like these are absolute bullshit?
vincentpol no, i am saying that Star Wars should have been here. i like this list, but Star Wars should have been here.
you cant denie that industrial light and magic are geniuses.
NunuInc No exactly, that's why videos like these are bullshit and is nothing more than an intern's afternoon work of combining a few of his own personal favorites. Instead of calling this the top 10 of , it should be the top 10 of of person . These things are nothing more than to attract views without actual content. So you really shouldn't look too much into the credibility of these videos.
the new Evil Dead for practical effects there were amazing.
The Thing..100% agree! Over 30 years later..still my favorite effects movie.
Another thing about Matrix: Reloaded, was that the ENTIRE FREEWAY was made specifically for the film in a desert. It was 3 miles long and was torn down after filming.
While you are correct about the freeway being made for the film, you are wrong about the location. It was not filmed in a desert. It was filmed in Alameda, California which is in the San Francisco Bay Area right next to the city of Oakland and is far from being a desert.
yeah, and Mythbusters have also used that strip of freeway for 2 of their myths i think.
jiangx18 What do you not get about "tore it down"
I think more than a couple of myths
***** They used the empty land where the freeway was built.
They missed the classic face melt from "Raiders of the Lost Ark"!
and the face decomposition scene from Poltergeist
That scene was badass
face it, they missed a lot
What about the melting face in Raiders? That still gives me the creeps every time I see it
You were definately right about The Thing!
It wasn't a practical effect. It was CGI.
Yes, in 1981 they used computers to simulate melting wax mannequins... ;-)
I love practical effects so much better than CGI.
I just saw The Thing a couple of month ago and i was like this 0.0 i mean impressive!
I think the effects in the thing are still holding up without any hint of cgi they even used a man with severed limbs, and some illusionist tricks to make all the effects possible. Thank you Rob, nicely done.
I think 2001 should've been on this list. That movie still looks pretty clean.
No bullets used in Predator. All explosives set inside the trees. Watch the how it's made, or something like that, where they talk about that scene.
Thanks for explaining. My bad I didn't realize that they could use mini explosives as well.
PrekiFromPoland No offense taken. Shows just how well done that shot was using the power of illusion.
PrekiFromPoland What Japanese movies would you recommend? I'd like to check some out.
Speaking of Japanese movies the effect on Tetsuo, The Iron Man? Absolutely crazy.
how awesome would it be if they would still use these.
Your right on that point.lets see the remastered star trek its like your watching an intro to a 2001 video game and back when some of these films were made when Puppets and make up where phenomenal.
The main reason i love Alien and Aliens over all the others!! Alien queen was jaw dropping!!!
yes!
No Little Shop of Horrors......Audrey II (the plant) was amazing.
The Dark Knight and Inception. 2 of the best movies of our time.
Possessed Furby nah
What? No mention of the face melting scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Nice profile pic
***** damn right!
***** those were pretty good effects considering the time when it was done and tech available.
When the fly monster spits acid in the face of a man in the fly 2 it's horryfing but amazing effects
Hell yeah! When I saw the title of this video I was hoping they would at least give "The Thing" and honorable mention, let alone the #1 spot. Without a doubt my favorite horror movie. The special effects were far ahead of its time and I still get chills sometimes when I watch it.
The Fly II had some pretty damn good practical effects! Just check out the "Face Melt" scene, you'll know what I mean lol
Jurassic park should be number 1. More than 20 years later nothing comes close to the T-rex breakout scene
You forgot every Muppet movie.
An American werewolf in London's transformation was INCREDIBLE. Rick Baker is everything.
Oh, so the Necromorphs in Dead Space were inspired by the Thing.
Yes. They say that on the making of Dead space.
I agree with The Thing Boeing number one, but Videodrome deserved to be number 2 instead of jurassic park in my opinion.
David Cronenberg films alone would make a great list.
I like the Queen Alien from the second movie best because as well as the kick ass design which took the original alien design up a notch it also had that womb thing which looked awesome as hell, especially one it gets some grenades blasted into it!
I would love to be a director, and I adore practical effects! I think they not only add realism, but can also be more engaging!
You better have The Thing as number one. Way out in front in this category.
Great list, agree 100%
remember seeing The Thing back in 1982 when you literally went into the theatre without know a Thing about the movie, no pun intended, the trailer didn't give away spoilers so when you went into that theatre and shit started to hit the fan everyone in there was freaking out, one of those movie moments that I remember like it was yesterday
The THING!!!! Fantastic list 👍🏼
Oh, Peter Jackson :/ I wish you'd gone down this route again for The Hobbit trilogy.....
Hahaha totally some of the CGI was shit in the Desolation of Smaug
Archie M Ticehurst Indeed. I especially found the CGI horses to be particularly terrible!
I thought the CG in the Hobbit movies looked pretty fluid. Although, that might have been just me freaking out at how cool the 48FPS looked.
Star Wars (before ACTUAL CGI was used), Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., maybe even Gremlins.
Yes, I WAS surprised Eraserhead wasn’t there.
So... you choose Matrix: Reloaded instead of leaving room for Star Wars.... or even Raiders of the Lost Ark.... or E.T.... or anything else?!?!
***** Steven spielberg never made star wars.
William Jay "(excluding star wars)."
i love lamp i love lamp
I think they chose those due to the fact that the practical FX were so good, they went undetected, and were classed as CGI.
What do you have against the Matrix is it because it's a better movie than your star wars....lol jk... To each it's own I guess.... lol
Batfan: "What gives you the rights? What's the difference between you and me?"
Dark Knight: "I'M NOT WEARING HOCKEY PANTS!"
The Thing (1982) is a masterpiece.
Amazing how it was unfairly panned when it was released as it is truely one of the best suspense/sci-fi movies made.
John Carpenter went in a totally different direction than the original "The Thing From Another World" and made his version a classic.
That T-rex was real?!
Just the close-up's
Gonz Junior Okay..You are an idiot. By asking if the T-rex was real he ment " was it a puppet or CGI" Seriously! Dont make drunk comments! You'll look like an idiot.
Goddamn, Jurassic Park 1 and 2 look just as real now as they did when I was a kid.
Damn Mojo Top 10's always put me in a youtube loop!!!
I'm surprised Terminator isn't on this list also.
I should be.
They put that on there bad practical effects video for some reason.
Most of these were pre-CGI, and probably WOULD use CGI if they'd been made today.
Terminator 2 should be number one. That film uses animatronics, make-up, miniatures, stop-motion and rear projection to the best of their abilities.
Cybopath No, no it shouldn't. You must not have ever seen The Thing. Which you should, because it's still way more tense than anything that passes for suspense/horror these days.
OgreSamanosuke
John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favourite films and it should be on the list but there is more to practical effects than just animatronics.
I knew "the thing" would get number 1, one of my favorite movies of all time
