When I first started playing my guitar teacher said buy boss pedals you can't go wrong with them.. I did, they worked and sounded good.. as time passed I tried other pedal brands and moved away from boss.. now I've come full circle after 30yrs of playing and use mostly boss pedals again. They just work, do what I need them to do and at a reasonable price. Would recommend them to anyone. Awesome video, love your playing. 👍
The Boss ST-2 works amazing as an edge of breakup tone into a clean Fender-y or Vox-y tone. Give it a try man. Start with the tones at noon, level at 1:00, and roll the gain in from zero. I usually have it just cracked on. At those settings, it also makes a great overdrive.
@danharding9136 From a quick Google, May I suggest the MXR Timmy? It is what the Jan Ray is based on. Cheaper and in a full band mix would be indistinguishable. But if you like throwing away money, that's your perogative.
@nmcgregor1990 sorry mr google but I think you'll find the Jan Ray was based on an actual Timmy Pedal. They're no longer manufactured. The MXR Timmy is a cheap clone. I'm in a fortunate position where I can buy whatever pedals I want, so ive been able to compare. Your strangely strong opinion is based on RUclips and Google, evidently.
@nmcgregor1990 *prerogative The Jan Ray isn't based on the MXR Timmy. Its based on a real Timmy that are no longer manufactured. I'm in a fortunate position to buy whatever equipment I like. Some of which is cheap and some expensive. And I'm old enough to have tried most things and A B them. What i do know is You Tube and Google research should never give you enough confidence to argue the toss with people that have played said products.
I use the Boss OD-3 as a Preamp. In front of it is the MXR GT-OD and a Fuzz Face. No other Overdrive is more "stackable" than the OD-3... and Sounds amazing alone.
love it,,,mostly flat eq curve, makes a great 2nd channel...very natural gain sound...soft compression...perhaps the best bedroom playing pedal..I find the BD-2 has that icy hair on the note that helps cut in a live setting better than the OD3...but a very similar vibe.
As someone who has played guitar since the early 80s, I started out with Ibanez and Boss. Later on , I got into more expensive and “boutique” pedals. Interestingly, I often go back to my old Boss pedals (particularly MIJ versions) because they work so well!
I have a few of the more expensive, not necessarily boutique, pedals, but only due to Boss not having an equivalent. However, my favorite compressor is my Boss CP-1X. The MDP technology makes for an amazing sound. If I go to a guitar shop and there's some Boss pedals to work with, I can use them to check things out. They just work.
He's scamming working musicians with poor work on custom pedalboards, selling cheap OEM wah pedals at a huge mark up and popping off about his products being cloned without researching the product allegedly cloning his.
I am EXTREMELY satisfied with my Boss GX100. Especially the footswitch and expression pedal assignment. So flexible and easy to program. The Space Echo and amp modeling alone is worth the price.
I read somewhere that many pros use them because when they tour, they can always pick up a replacement anywhere if one goes wrong - which they don’t often do anyway!
Frank Dunnery did a video recently and he said “and there’s my boss delay which I’ve had since the 80s”. Steve overland from FM has had the same pedal board since the 80s too; boss comp, chorus and delay are on it with maybe a DS1 too I think. He did major tours in the 80s and 90s then 15 years on the pub circuit and now back to major league touring again. Same boss pedals.
Bought used DS1 for 30 dollars. Great sounding pedal since I am a Satch fan it was just bonus. Surprisingly quieter than my marshall blues breaker and RAT.
I worked in a music store early 80's when the Boss HM-2 came out, shifted buckets of them.... you couldn't shift a Tubescreamer back then. A friend of mine was working in a local studio where Steve Howe was doing a session.... he arrived with his Gibson 175 plugged it into an HM-2 and DI'd into desk.... I'll reserve judgement on the overall sound apart from saying that it sounded like Steve Howe DI'd thru a HM pedal!
I started to build my first pedal board. With the Vox tuner , a mooer booster. And then I got from nux the chorus pedal. And was shocked how much it altered the sound and act like a compressor even when not activated. So I gave it back and got the Boss chorus pedal. And it's perfect. So it's right boss is a quality what you can count on
You can certainly go wrong with Boss expression pedals. I have an EV30 and two FV500Ls. They all have a dead zone at the heel end accounting for 25-30% of the travel. There may be good ones, but 3 out of 3 is indicative that this is normal for Boss expression pedals. I have seen many forum postings from people who were unable to calibrate their pedals on their modellers, and were blaming the modeller. They only checked the expression pedal when I have pointed it out, and frequently found that the problem was the Boss expression pedal that they had been using.
You want one of the newer GE-7 with SMT, it's worth buying a new one if you can't verify it on a used pedal. OD-3 or Nobels are as good as anything. Better than a 500 currency hammertone thing with bakelite knobes and embossed company placard riveted on.
My OD-3 is my favorite drive pedal (if I don't need a fuzz and also don't need a mid push like a tube screamer does). Furhter I like my TC Electronic Cinders a lot, they say it is BOSS Blues Driver inspired.
Prince used boss. Thing with boss pedals is matching the pedal to the guitar to the amp. They've got you basically covered, it's just finding the one that works best in your particular setup
One thing I like about Boss pedals is, if you frequently change out the 9 volt batteries, the connector and wires don't seem to fail easily- unlike my Ibanez Auto Filter pedal.
Got the OD3 last year, love the sound profile. There's no use in comparing OD pedals, they all have different EQ profiles and gain levels, along with different types of clipping. No one is really "better" just better for the individual. It's highly subjective
The expensive pedal has a crisper top end, maybe it sounds ( subconsciously), reminiscent of a black-face Fender combo. That airy 8-10K feeling emphasises the reverb and the detail of the presence as if it were a negative feedback/ presence boost in the " master" section ( power amp), of the amp. The Boss pedal was just as pleasant sounding but seems to have a slightly more warm upper mid tone without as much high end,( unless that's the way you set it up) , in any case the high roll-off , at least is more forgiving of a rock player where spitty stuff is unpleasant to hear in drive sound. It may also be because the Boss is aimed at a more general market, and less care was put into the eq curve so high frequencies may be harsh under drives, in which case the Boss can mask its shortcomings like less detail in the highs, and a more Marshall/Boogie sound for rockers, in contrast with the more clear " apple juice" tone of a Fender amp... once again, drive pedsls mimicking amps, perhaps.
SD1 is awesome as a boost. I think it brings more presence than a TS and that works really well for some guitars and amps. I love the new SDE-3 as well, and have 2 versions of the HM2.
Try setting an SD1 to bypass, turn the drive all the way up and you will hear a fizz in the background. Leaky bypass in an otherwise great pedal. Most noticeable if you have a bright cap and clean sound that actually is clean.
Thank to talk about the OD1-X because it's sticking on my pedalboard for years. Try others pedals to replace it...all sent back. There is something about how the frequencies are mastering for more clarity
Boss Pedals used to be considered not only TOTL, but the industry standard. To see cork-sniffing snobs turn their noses up at Boss pedals makes me despise humanity.
I love my Boss pedals, but will throw in an unpopular opinion: these days I find TC Electronic pedals both better sounding and better value in most pedal styles. Even their tuner beats Boss IMO.
The good old Boss Metal Zone can do pretty much everything with that extensive control set it has, that said I like the Boss Mega Distortion and DS1 too. 😊
You could just have Elodie go down the line of them, and which ever one she picks is the one to use for that Next Gig. LOL. They all bring out that Stratocaster Poison for Christmas.
Hey John, I was wondering if you had tried out some of the Waza Boss pedals? I have very much been enjoying them recently and I use many of them. I have collected most of them but did not have enough money when the TB-2w came out and have avoided the heavy metal pedals so far
I've never particularly got on with my od3. I prefer the od1-x, though they are slightly different beasts. Here I like the od3 the least out of the three
Not entirely. Though satch and Vai are known for using Keeley modded ds1 back in the day who else is well known for it? Plenty just have stock boss pedals
John, Time to take a break. You have made your weekly itinerary known on your videos. There is no way you can keep that up and still have your marriage intact. There are several studies that show the correlation of Depression and RUclips.

The OD-3 is my go to overdrive pedal and has been on 90% of my pedalboards. It’s an amazing gain boost pedal fantastic for leads as you showed.
This has further cemented my belief that there is absolutely no reason to pay the unreasonable price for any Vemuram pedals 😂
The Jan Ray is worth every penny. It’s a very special pedal imo.
@danharding9136 From a quick Google, May I suggest the MXR Timmy? It is what the Jan Ray is based on. Cheaper and in a full band mix would be indistinguishable. But if you like throwing away money, that's your perogative.

Picked up the Blues Driver used last month. It sounds about perfect to me. Glassy clean crunch through to moderate crunch.
When I started playing guitar the front runners were Boss, Digitech, and Electro Harmonix, MXR. I don't get the wave of obsession for boutique pedals.
I have a few of the more expensive, not necessarily boutique, pedals, but only due to Boss not having an equivalent. However, my favorite compressor is my Boss CP-1X. Boss pedals are rock solid and sound outstanding. If they were in fancier cases, they'd be double the price.
Where's the guy who told me I work at McDonalds because I like boss pedals more than strymon. Who's laughing now???
He's scamming working musicians with poor work on custom pedalboards, selling cheap OEM wah pedals at a huge mark up and popping off about his products being cloned without researching the product allegedly cloning his.

Agreed. To me The GX even sounds better than the GT1000 core.
If you can't do it with BOSS...it's not the pedals
I read somewhere that many pros use them because when they tour, they can always pick up a replacement anywhere if one goes wrong - which they don’t often do anyway!
It is a lie. Cause Boss Pedals never brake or fail.
Frank Dunnery did a video recently and he said “and there’s my boss delay which I’ve had since the 80s”. Gilmour used the HM-2 throughout the '80's.

My favourite Boss pedal is the SD1 used as a boost for clean amps.

Johnny Marr was a big user of BOSS
Very subjective, but Ive always thought their drive pedals work best with single coils.
Prince used boss. Thing with boss pedals is matching the pedal to the guitar to the amp. They've got you basically covered, it's just finding the one that works best in your particular setup

I just ordered a eq7 and a cs3 from reverb.. can't wait until they come in

Regarding the Boss GE7, there is a modded "Analogman GE7" that is supposed to be quieter and work better. There are YT videos.

Loving the hell out of my boss sde-3 right now!
I have the sd1. It is a fantastic pedal. High end with lots of harmonics.
I really like the OD1x - it’s like a hi fi drive, but OD3, BD2w and SD1w are always on my board sd1 into bd2 works very well
I love my Boss pedals, but will throw in an unpopular opinion: these days I find TC Electronic pedals both better sounding and better value in most pedal styles. Even their tuner beats Boss IMO.
Spot on.
I bought a 2009 BD-2 today… cheap as…. it’s friggn great…
Boss OD-3. Everyone should own one.
There's a reason Boss pedals have been around since 1973 .... Boss pedals are reliable, simple as that ! Try the EQ John....
Hey John. I bought your Angry Driver on eBay! A fab pedal. Many thanks. Naz
Proof boss pedals are as good as the vemuram. The od3 sounds almost identical to shanks until you gun them
OD 3 was my choice before I switched solely to amp gain and I don’t use gain pedals for other reason than as a booster.
Also easy to replace if pedals fuck up whilst on tour.
The good old Boss Metal Zone can do pretty much everything with that extensive control set it has, that said I like the Boss Mega Distortion and DS1 too. 😊

Gear is just a texture for the music.
OD3 sounds more "open" and less compressed to me. A little less hair too.
I think I need to get one again. It's been years.
Probably just had more gain on the od1-x. Theres more control over the gain and EQ on the od1-x than the od3
Hey John, I was wondering if you had tried out some of the Waza Boss pedals? I have very much been enjoying them recently and I use many of them. I have collected most of them but did not have enough money when the TB-2w came out and have avoided the heavy metal pedals so far
Think the waza sd1 was in here earlier in the year
Curious about the various Boss delay pedals....
I love my DD2 spec DD3 (same long chip as the DD2)
Boss is Boss. Hence the name hehe.
I'll never part with my CE-2. Pure magic
They’re great but they so heavy lol! An all boss pedalboard probably weighs 40lbs 🤣🤣
OD3 is better than the other two
I've never particularly got on with my od3. I prefer the od1-x, though they are slightly different beasts. Here I like the od3 the least out of the three
Usual suspects here... Bd-2W and a Sd-1 on my boards.
I want them all 😢 😂😂😂
Really only the the Keeley modded versions for pros
Not entirely. Though satch and Vai are known for using Keeley modded ds1 back in the day who else is well known for it? Plenty just have stock boss pedals
6 years ago, on Mike Stern's rig rundown his rig consisted of 7 Boss pedals and not much else.

It's a real shame that the effects in the Boss GX100 don't sound like the actual pedals. I sold my GX100 because the effects in it were poor.
Arent they ripping us of?
They seem priced fair for original circuits. It's not like a $200 clone of common "iconic" pedals that everyone already has.
Primeiro!!!!!
