- Hurricane Helene is tonight going to make landfall around Florida’s Big Bend as a major tropical storm, bringing “unsurvivable conditions” due to a coastal storm surge near the centre of the hurricane up to 20 feet (6 metres). Destructive large waves are on top of that 20 foot storm surge.
At the time of recording this (10am Thursday, ET) Helene had sustained winds of 125mph (200kmh) and gusts to 155mph (250kmh).
The storm is very large, covering 400 miles (645km) across with tropical storm force winds.
Helene is also tracking very quickly northwards overnight tonight.
Keep up to date with official warnings from local authorities and the National Hurricane Center as tracking, maps, totals and timings may still change in the coming hours. This was a snapshot of conditions and forecasts just as severe weather was setting in and ramping up on Thursday PM Eastern Time.

Visited my son in Pensacola a few years back and experienced the tail end of a major storm. Very scary night but we survived.
My wife has a sister who lives near Pensacola hope the flooding isn’t to bad
NE FL dodged this one, prayer to other side of the coastline! 🙏
I'm praying that people leave who are to evacuate and everyone uses common sense and stay SAFE !! ❤ I am in S.C. and I'm worried-cant imagine what poor Florida feels like-its scary ! 😢
Thank you for sharing this
Will Helene reach as far North as Virginia and DC?
It's possible some rain may spillover from the south and west into those two areas, but for now most severe weather is south-west of there.
One little change will bring back calm. Thank you for the reminder.
Hurricanes are getting stronger, sea level rise is accelerating and floods are increasing due to Climate Change.
Hurricanes have been here since the beginning of time
@tinatovar7548 So has the Greenhouse Effect.
Don’t think we need the weather from Florida
A lot of us are interested actually. And Weather Watch is a good channel to watch. If you aren't interested, simply watch something else.
