Congratulations my dude. As an IT guy who’s been where you were I can feel decompression of your soul from all the way on the other side of the world. Stoked to hear we’ll get more of you doing what you love most. Greetings from Queensland, Australia
I have so much respect for you. You seem to live your life with integrity (avoiding sponsorship if at all possible, not making promises you can't keep, being a financial support for the people in your life, reinvesting your patreon money back into the business, etc). Also, I couldn't care less that you don't upload frequently. You only upload tightly scripted videos which are educational, humorous, and tell a story (that integrity again.). My personal favorite is the one about the Ryobi soldering station. You were on a roll with the humor in that one. I rarely watch a youtube video twice, but that one I did! I'm glad that you've decided to quit a job that is stealing your soul to pursue this full time. You're obviously very good at it.
The reason I don't mind your release schedule is mainly because each video always ends up being long and high quality regardless of the topic instead of some generic idea everyone' has done. 👍 Happy to hear you're making this healthy decision in your life!
That and (trying to say this in a light manner) there are so many tech RUclips channels covering current day news, old and new gadgets, niche technologies, etc. that it feels challenging to not find something worth watching. I guess that's the blessing of having RUclips video creators that are passionate about their work.
That's one of the reasons I love this channel, Technology Connections & LGR. They're not a super strict schedule but each video they put out is a literal thesis paper on the topic at hand.q
I always assumed you did youtube full time because of the quality of the videos being so good, it's crazy to think you were doing it as a side hobby 😨 Congrats!!!
It's insane to hear you have had a day job this whole time. The quality of content you've been putting out has been far beyond your subscriber count for quite a while. I'm excited to see what new things you will produce, and the growth it will lead to.
This is great news! Finally got me on Patreon. Just wanted to say, I'm really glad you didn't promise any changes. Pretty much the same here. And how bad is the RUclips algorithm that I've been watching TC's videos obsessively for years, and not ONCE did RUclips suggest Mr. Ray Dude? The fandom Venn diagram would be a single circle if people simply knew both channels existed!
7:10 "Promises are what kill freelancers." did psychic damage to me personally but it's so true dude. i went through grueling burnout a year or two back feeling guilty over "promises" or not being able to "deliver content" regularly and it was literally destroying my health. felt that one in my fuckin heart call me a sap but i genuinely think it's beautiful when people come together and don't care about "regular content", they just wanna support someone whose work and labor they respect and enjoy. thinking about people sending you laptops and like, from my point of view, i'm willing to bet a lot of the offers come from a place of "well it's just sitting in my closet doing nothing, but i might as well give/lend it to someone who actually has the resources to show it off a bit, no matter how shitty this thing is". that's community, babey genuinely, congrats on making the leap to making videos full-time, may you find relief in ditching your awful day job ✌
I agree. I did set up a business with my wife from scratch, almost seven years ago. We are both microelectronics engineers, meat each other in the tech university, living in Germany. We have a few old friends as employees. The first two and a half years were extreme. We worked 60-70 hours a week. Sometimes even up to 90. We bought a two story office building from a loan. After work, we did another work on the house. We also live in this house and needed to transform office space into living space. We also wanted to pay off the loan as quickly as possible. We managed to earn almost a million in this time. Was it worth it? No. Not at all. We should have done it at a much slower pace and not rush it. It's a wonder that none of us had a complete mental breakdown. My wife is a very tough person. Before she moved to Germany, she lived a hard life of a native siberian. Without her, i would not have had the strength to go through all of this. As of today, it became much more relaxed. Our business got established, we have all the expensive tools and machines to assemble our own devices in house with industrial precision in a smaller scale. I would never do any assembly in China, because they don't have any respect for intellectual property of others. And EU-based production is pricey and also not super safe from foreign industrial espionage. We only buy single components. Some of our devices are used in critical infrastructure, so having everything locked down is a plus. But we can only provide on a smaller scale, as said. Due to our capabilities we get paid way better and in 1-2 years we plan to only work part time. Edit: Typo correction, I'm not a native english speaker.
I had a similar experience trying to chase twice-weekly releases for 18 months and then very suddenly having to cut back to “when it happens”. Though my stuff was, uh, not a kind of video which can go on RUclips let’s just leave it at that >.> been focusing on music and hand-drawn art instead since covid.
You, sir, are an inspiration. I'm working toward this same dream which you have now achieved. I completely empathize with almost everything about your situation (though my other channels are nowhere near as successful yet, lol) This video has given me a kick in the pants. It's time to get creating!
You’re not dense, you’re cautious and we’re nervous about financial instability. You protected yourself and everyone you support just to make sure you’re safe and sound. Cheers to many more videos over years!

Congrats! I don't know how many times I bring up your videos when chatting with other techie friends! Good luck on the new venture and I look forward to the new and quirky things you'll be sharing next!
I can tell you actually value polite criticism and corrections. Other you tubers could learn a lot from that. Glad you are making this leap. You are good at this and I enjoy your videos.
Congratulations, CRD! It's insane that you've been making these videos in your spare time. So good to hear that you'll be able to work on your passion full time! I've seen a few other RUclipsrs do the same, and in every case, you can see the happiness with their decision reflected their content. Keep up the awesome work :)
I love your work, so happy to see you being happy. It amazes me how many famous youtubers have followed you, and its probably for the same reason I do. You are knowledgeable, you are interesting, you are a good communicator, you are humble, you are kind and you are funny. I hope you can do this forever - or until you get bored.
You are one of my favourite creators/channels on RUclips, and I'm glad you've grown to the point where it's a viable living for you now. I just subbed to your Patreon, which I've been meaning to do forever tbh, good luck with the channel!
That you’ve been able to do this consistently AND keep up an IT day job is actually insane and I think we’re all incredibly happy for you. I personally can’t believe you could stand looking at a computer after getting home, I cannot bring myself to do close to anything after getting home from work and that you’ve been able to consistently put out higher than broadcast quality content for that amount of time is genuinely a feat. I am excited for your future even if it’ll be just more of the same!
My job isn't IT but I have more electronics/electrical qualifications than I do for IT. Translation all I do is troubleshoot all day long, so when I have to TS something outside work hours I really hate it. Though when mechanical I find it less horrific. BTW, the reason I never went into IT is because I still wanted to enjoy computers on my personal time. Though the only exception is anything audio.
Awesome news, congratulations and good luck! Love your videos, they're so well researched, scripted and presented. Plus you're so well adjusted, and I particularly like your honesty and candour. Wishing you the very best!
So happy you're able to go full time! You're approaching this nicely, calmly, no promises and that's great. Very level headed of you, and it's fully within the realm of the acceptable. I hope success continues to come to you as it has before. 🎉
I'm happy for you. I love your videos. The topics, the writing, your investigations, the questions you come up with, the speculations, and the stories you piece together are so entertaining. Your personality, humor, and delivery are something special. I feel both understood as a person and fascinated with ideas when I watch you do your thing. Thanks so much. I really appretiate it.
The moment you mentioned you where working there for 12 years it really validated everything you said so much more. Mans clearly a committed human with a lot of willpower.
Congrats! I lived that day job / evening RUclipsr life and it was rough. It was so liberating to go full time. No regrets and I'm still able to eat! :)
Your videos are like a treat in my sub box. I don’t know when they’re going to show up but I’m always happy when they do. Best of luck with the change, and look after yourself 👍🎉
It's always a good day when there's a CRD upload. The selfish part of me is happy that you quit your day job and will be sticking to RUclips, but ultimately I'm happy that this sounds like a very positive step in your personal life, I hope this gives you the balance you need (and deserve!) (SEASON 3 FOREVER)
I am super happy to see you doing this full time. I used to work with you, in a lower tier of support. I learned a fuckton from you, and it was clear from anyone that knows you or brought you a challenging call that the company was squandering your talent. Thank you so much dude, and good luck in this new chapter.
Hell yes man!! This kicks ass!! Been watching you for about a year now and am floored you've still been managing a day job the entire time, considering the quality and depth you go into in your videos. So happy to see you take the plunge ❤
Keep up the great work and congratulations. The amount of work you put in and the detail you present in your videos is fantastic. I have ben enjoying your channel for a long time now. There aren't many places where you can learn about all of the wonderful and nostalgic things you cover.
I appreciate you sharing this. I love your channel and watch/listen to you daily at work. Thank you for the honesty and I look forward to you continuing the same content.
Congratulations dude, been here since Technology connections shouted you out and honestly I think you're by far the best tech RUclipsr I watch. You go into far more depth on subjects than LGR and the 8-bit guy while having a better sense of humor and flow (imo) than TC and techmoan. If I could afford it long term, I would absolutely subscribe to your Patreon. Keep it up dude, you got this!
Yeah, I love TC but especially in recent times it feels like he's forcing himself to make videos about incredibly uninteresting subjects, exclusively because they might benefit the environment or whatever. I'd rather just look into those in my free time, and CRD clearly makes videos about what he's *personally* interested in, and his enthusiasm shows. Enthusiasm and sincerity will always make videos better than any unenthusiastic competition, no matter the subject matter.
LMAO when the youtube comment section is better than your real life job. Im glad that you are able to finance yourself through something that you enjoy doing. Best to you and the growth of your channel!
Just found you, and I love the pace of your speaking, very clear, fast enough to get information out in a timely fashion and very clear and intelligible. Great job, keep up the good work!
I'm SO happy for you!! I have no doubt whatsoever that you'll have more success than you can even imagine. You have a great gift in that you're able to make anything interesting! I know exactly how you feel with regard to burning the candle at both ends... Honestly, after seeing your investment in the studio I thought you had already transitioned to doing RUclips full-time. It's insanely impressive that you were managing both simultaneously! In case you still feel a bit uncomfortable, just remember that the risk/reward ratio is absolutely in your favor. Keep building what you're building and I promise it will work. I can't wait to see you grow even further as a result of this change!
The biggest enjoyment factor in Star Trek, for me, is often just indulging the fantasy that somebody incredibly compassionate, capable, cunning, and stunningly sharp is actually running the show. The idea that there's one person like that, who could call the shots, then captain the crew so deftly is like... society euphoria? I get that same feeling with these updates, you're so amazingly, exactingly ON POINT with your delivery, points, concerns, clarity, your FORMAT, and even a bit extra vulnerable. Love and vibes, you're amazing, y'gotta believe my parasocial belief! you just gotta! I'm beyond excited for season 3.5 of CRD, I'm going to have to actually sign up now! :)
Just started watching a few months back, but really enjoy your work. Hope you'll have more time to make and do things you enjoy! Grats on the decision and you have our support! ♥
I've only recently tuned in to your channel, and am quite enjoying it. Really good on you for pulling the band-aid off and taking the plunge for your own happiness. You deserve it. Good luck! Another sub here.
Nice! I quit my 17 year day job back in 2001 to do my own thing and 22 years later I'm still at it. Best decision of my life. Hard work pays off! Good luck my friend, you have a great channel.
You know what´s lowering my stress levels tremendously? It is your great content and personality! You don´t have to change ANYTHING and ill support you as much as i can!
This is such an awesomely honest video. I too have a "high-density" personality; if my wife weren't blatantly a obvious personality, I'd still be single. Congrats, hopefully if video releases increase, it's due to you enjoying it. I have been going crazy with 3D printing, learning modeling, etc because I really enjoy the exercise in frustration.
Great news. I get giddy every time I see your vids come up in my subscriptions. Gonna subscribe to your Patreon now as I've always wanted to, but was unemployed for a while until a couple weeks ago. I hope this change helps you thrive and brings you great fulfillment, your presence here is immensely appreciated.
Congratulations!! Honestly shocked you were working a full-time job doing this, because that's an insane workload and you've been doing such a fantastic job here! Seriously, your channel is a favorite of mine and I want to wish you all the best from here on out!
It is totally awesome that you were able to ditch your toxic day job and earn enough here to support your family while doing what you (and we) love with meaningful discourse with like minded people. You’re doing great and hope you never stop.
I've been wanting to support you on Patreon ever since I saw the soldering iron video, and today I finally took the time (all of the two minutes it took) to actually do it. No worries, I'm not on fixed income! It's just that every time I see a video of yours on my subs page, a dumb grin sneaks on my face because I know I'm in for a treat. I wish you all the best with your newly un-acquired day job and I'm looking forward to all the not-changes you're gonna make! Go girl, give us nothing!
I am now a patron as well. Here is the list of people I (currently) support. Combined they are better than netflix or a cable subscription. Fran Blanche, Nick Chapsas, Pam D (Cannot Be Tamed), Zack Freedman, Retronauts, Physics Girl, Javier Rivera, and now Cathode Ray Dude. The value they bring to my life is _well_ worth the $50(ish) a month I spend on them.
Hope to be joining you soon...about halfway to making it happen. Great job and that day must have felt SO GOOD :) Cheers and I have no doubt you will be doing well!
Best of luck to you in your new approach! I know such a big change can be scary. Excited to see more videos, but make sure to take some of your new found time to be with those you love!
Love the long deep dive videos. I've done bits in TV and stuff (may real job has always been music (and the tech)), but seeing the old video tech that used to be hundreds of thousands still being used is so interesting. The way you explain the principles with a little desktop rig is excellent. The analogies to modern stuff is really good. Good luck! Worth watching, for sure! :-)
You are a freaking star mate...and this is a literal guide book to health, for real. It's so great to see someone nailing this *before* it's too late. Re: 3rd camera: I vote guest camera for each video!!!!!
Congrats!! I "discovered" your channel through YT's algorithm and now I make it a habit of watching your past vids while having my morning coffee practically every day. Your content is so well researched and so so entertaining, it's honestly so delightful to find genuine content creators like yourself and see how they grow and share their passion with their communities!
Realized I hadn't already been a Patron and signed up immediately when I saw this. Congrats on being in a better place already! One thing I've always enjoyed about your videos how easy it is to just listen to how the stories/deep dives play out. In addition, the various gags and jokes that are snuck in are always a joy when they happen, even if I know that one (or two of them) is coming from a mile away. Once again, congrats on being where you are right now! Hope that the reduced stress allows you to work (and rest) more easily.
New-ish subscriber here. First off, thanks for all of your great content! Secondly, congratulations: taking that plunge is no small feat. Lastly, there is a great community of supporters behind you from what I’ve seen, and it’s quite nice to see respect both from and to the channel.
Congratulations! Best of luck to you and this channel in the future, your channel has quickly become my favorite channel I've watched after discovering it a little while ago.
One of the most wholesome videos I have ever seen on this website, and it just brought such warmth to my heart. Congratulations on your success, may you continue to see such success, may you continue to feel the warmth and the joy and the celebration of what you give to your audience.
Congrats on making such a big decision and also thanks for sharing such an intimate look into your own personal situation! It's been wild watching your channel's growth and seeing how that has reflected on you! I'm excited to see where you go on or off location, and I, for one, will definitely be excited to see all the new topics you'll be covering in the future. "Do what you love, and you'll never work another day in your life”
So happy for you! I made the jump at the end of last year to full-time youtube as well. It was a fantastic choice! Keep up the awesome content my friend!
Congratulations! It's awesome that you have this opportunity to support yourself doing things that you love. The point about promises is an important one too that I have had to learn repeatedly over my history making content across a variety of platforms, promises are trouble because you make them when your energy is high
100% believed this was the only thing you did, because of how consistently high quality your videos are. Delighted to hear that you're able to fully focus your attention on it now. Keep up the good work!
I love your channel. Most of the time i dont understand most of the technical stuff, but i still love it. Your delivery, your editing, the quirky gadgets,, its all great. Keep it up ! Greetings from Lima Peru...
You quickly became one of my favorite channels on youtube, not only because of content but because you just seem like a really pleasant and passionate dude. I'm very happy and excited for you and gonna consider joining the patreon if I can budget it :)
Just subscribed to your Patreon. I’m so happy (both selfishly and on your behalf) that you’re able to make this your full-time gig, and I want to be one of the many helping make that happen.
Congratulations!! I've just gotten into your channel this year, and honestly I really love it. I'm incredibly glad you've committed to a lifestyle that you enjoy way more, without the copious amounts of stress influencing your mental state. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see it :) PS: I've REALLY enjoyed your new Quick Start series, it's amazing!!!
Congrats, I'm really happy for you. You deserve it. Your channel is great and I can''t wait to see what things you are able to accomplish going forward with more time and less stress! Very smart move!
Good luck and best wishes for the future from Ireland. I really like your videos. You are honest and you give a great deal of insight. Keep doing what gives you pleasure.
Its of course saddening to hear how tough you've had it thus far, but know that your videos have always brightened my day! Can't wait for the hopefully bright and long future of videos ahead :)
At first I thought this was going to be a joke video since of course there's no way you hadn't *already* made this your full time job. Congrats! That's the dream... wow though I had no idea you were juggling both though. That is absolutely amazing with the level of quality your videos have been. Your non-promises are the best I could hope for. Looking forward to more.
I appreciate your attitude towards promises and how you're not gonna change what's not broken. Looking forward to your new videos, whenever they're ready! I can't financially support, but I'll continue to share your videos, hopefully that helps in some tiny way.
You've been a gem of a channel ever since i found you years ago! I'm very happy for you, and i love that you are following the way that you feel is right for you!
Hell yeah!
Congratulations on taking the plunge. You won't regret the day job I PROMISE
Holy shit it's the funny video essay guy, I love him :)
I can't WAIT until CRD's videos get so overwhelmingly high quality that one is released every 6 months. I know this sounds sarcastic but it's NOT.

Greetings from Chile and the best of luck on this new endeavour.
Well done man. This is the most incredible channel! Thank you for all the hard work you put into each video.
Congrats!!! Your talent and time is definitely the most valuable resource for the channel.
So happy you're able to go full time! You're approaching this nicely, calmly, no promises and that's great. Very level headed of you, and it's fully within the realm of the acceptable. I hope success continues to come to you as it has before. 🎉
Congrats man! Can't wait to see where you go with the channel!
Happy for you! Big fan and I’ll definitely be supporting this journey!
Congratulations! You do such a great job. I look forward to seeing the great content you produce by sharing your passion!
It's always a good day when there's a CRD upload. The selfish part of me is happy that you quit your day job and will be sticking to RUclips, but ultimately I'm happy that this sounds like a very positive step in your personal life, I hope this gives you the balance you need (and deserve!)
(SEASON 3 FOREVER)
I am super happy to see you doing this full time. I used to work with you, in a lower tier of support. I learned a fuckton from you, and it was clear from anyone that knows you or brought you a challenging call that the company was squandering your talent. Thank you so much dude, and good luck in this new chapter.
Hell yes man!! This kicks ass!! Been watching you for about a year now and am floored you've still been managing a day job the entire time, considering the quality and depth you go into in your videos. So happy to see you take the plunge ❤
Glad you're more free to do this! I always enjoy watching!!!
You're such a good, wholesome dude. I am genuinely happy you are able to make a living doing this.
Your transparency and integrity showcase your commitment to your craft in a polite and well rounded manor. Cheers m8
Much love for you and the channel man, great to hear the new change!
Congratulations on the big change! Love your videos, and glad to hear we're going to see a happier version of you in them!
Fully support this! Live your dream, we are all here to keep watching and loving this channel.
Congratulations! I'm personally super excited for whatever the future looks like
It is totally awesome that you were able to ditch your toxic day job and earn enough here to support your family while doing what you (and we) love with meaningful discourse with like minded people.
Your production quality always makes it seem as though you put in 80 hour work weeks just on this. Best of luck to you and your future endeavors.
I absolutely LOVE your videos and your personality. It is so inspiring to hear this story. Just...thank you for everything you have done.
Refreshing. Thanks man. Keep sharing and making videos. Enjoy. I continue to be subscribed.
I just found your channel tonight, and I've already binged a couple videos.
Loving the content so far!
Congratulations! You totally deserve it! I had a terrible job once that nearly killed me too. Yay for you and your fam! ;D ❤
New-ish subscriber here. First off, thanks for all of your great content! Secondly, congratulations: taking that plunge is no small feat. Lastly, there is a great community of supporters behind you from what I’ve seen, and it’s quite nice to see respect both from and to the channel.
Congratulations!!
You have no idea how much I’ve wanted an Amiga-AMOGUS shirt since I first saw it. Thank you for making them available.
Mate I love your channel. More videos! Yay. Well done for making the jump into full-time you tubing.
Good on ya man. I wish you the best success and I can’t wait to see what you turn out next. I’ll be tuning in fer sure.
Power to you man, your videos quality have always felt like a real full time quality, you being happier is just the reasonable next step!
Love the idea of location shoots. Especially broadcast facilities and the retro/modern equipment they use. Congrats on the change, and best of luck!
Congratulations!! I've just gotten into your channel this year, and honestly I really love it. I'm incredibly glad you've committed to a lifestyle that you enjoy way more, without the copious amounts of stress influencing your mental state. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see it :)
PS: I've REALLY enjoyed your new Quick Start series, it's amazing!!!
I just recently discovered your channel, and I'm glad I did. Hopefully, this can help you in that ways you need it to. Can't wait to see more.
Haha, very well done, your openness and the way you communicate are part of why we are here, besides the great content. I wish you all the best :)
Hi Congratulations, I'm enjoying watching your vidoes during my lunch while at work. Good luck for the future from Liverpool, UK.
This is so exciting, and you deserve it. You make some of the most interesting stuff on RUclips, and I hope you get to make it even better.
Congrats on a year, I’m excited for what’s to come!
