Seeing CPU load, I wonder if this exact device really uses iGPU for AI hardware acceleration and "deep learning". Two AI tasks and 7 cameras at approx. 50% CPU load looks like open source deepstack or tensorflow cpu solution (gpu reserved to nvidia cards). The question is then, why not to enable 720/920/1520+ series to use their hidden capacity? They got the same CPU. 8 free camera licenses or HDMI port do not explain the price point well enough for me. Raspberry Pi 4B + TPU coral would probably do better at a fraction of price, but of course requiring bit more user engagement. Although personally I'm still loyal to Synology, I currently struggle to find good arguments to convince myself to continue with this friendship. As always Tom, appreciate the content you share with us.
i have a dva3219 - i turned off all the ai features because it kept seeing hubcaps as faces, and if there was a plant in front of a stationary car, it would detect the car over and over again if the wind blew the plant around. Pretty neat, but definitely needs a bit more polish.
Just a minor correction: The VisualStations that Synology makes are basically not sold anymore. They were terribly buggy and the company is embarrassed/moving away from those products. You can barely find one to buy anymore. I'd love if they made a new model, but the chip shortage probably made it tricky.
Another great video sir! I'm in the process of pitching this system now for the use at the front gate of a gated community. As a long-time Synology user, I recently received a DVA1622 I have been playing around with. The ANPR and people/vehicle counting features, as well as the other potential app usage (i.e. docker for Unifi Controler deployment) makes this very competitive and versatile.
Thanks very much Sir. I have an impending installation and your video was very helpful in helping me to familiarize myself with the device as well as plan the installation so I dont look stupid at the client site. Will report back
Your LPR example is more than ideal - an oncoming very-slow moving vehicle is a no-brainer. I wonder how this unit would work out on that street for passing traffic
The amcrest camera night vision does a good job of seeing it, but obviously results may vary depending on angle of camera and what camera you have and how good the night vision is on it
I agree with Vissago - don't buy this for the face recognition... it is terrible in my testing. I uploaded pics of my wife and kids, and keep "correcting" the unknown faces. So far it can only identify them about 40% of the time even if they are looking right at the camera. Today as I backed out our van it recognized each wheel as an "Unknown face". When I arrived back home... same thing... there were four "Unknown face" events that were the wheels on our van. It also bumps the processing power from 2% to 26% and draws about 10 more watts of power. If it helps anyone, it did seem to do a little better at recognizing in h264 instead of h265. As much as I wanted to love it, I've gone back to my Eufy doorbell to tell me when there is a person at the door.
How does the recognition work from far away with high def cameras? Something to floor higher. Even just being able to get the snapshots of people and then review them easily would help.
Looks cool and all but only 2 deep video tasks means I can only get person detection on 2 feeds? That's rough. I have 5 cameras, so no chance at getting person detection to work on all 5 with the $800 model. The next step up is a $2500 unit and that's a big ask. The current solution is Blue Iris with Deep Stack AI. Works Okay but the NVR software from blue iris leaves some to be desired. With really only 2 deep video tasks this unit is super underpowered unless you have a very specific and known usecase. Seems like it's kinda of built to get you to upgrade to the bigger model.
I like the license model and Synology as a platform as a whole. Anyone else know of any other suites of hardware/software that you prefer over this? Especially if you have a ITSM/MSP experience and how it relates to that specifically.
Thanks for yet a great video. Only looking at the AI part , how does this stake up with the BlueIris AI ? I have been waiting on this NVR for a long time and the AI part looks good.
Really helpful video, thanks. I’ll be looking at this for home use. On a other note, a video showing how an intercom works in Surveillance Station would be great. Doesn’t seem to be any great videos on RUclips on it.
Thank you for the long review and information. small question please. So a Facial recognition task you can setup. is it "per camera" or can a task include multiple cameras?
So do i get it right.. i can use the DVA1622 as a normal NAS for my videos / photos to storage but i can also use it as a Surveillance Station with all this Ai stuff?
Hello, please can my explain: is big Difference in Survival station 9 software when compare: DVA1622 (with disabled DVA AI TASK) + AI cameras VS DS720+ with AI cameras, Whats is Difference in filtering or finding event when i use AI only from cameras, is any advantages of DVA in this setup ?
Do you have any recommendations on PIR cameras that work well with the Synologys. Currently running Ubiquiti cameras, and I am tired of having to delete false positives from the recordings.
Shame those advanced features are only available on DVA, just bought 1821+ and went for some overkill with ram/cache etc.... but not able to get those toys to play with.....bummer...hopefully they add it later with SW update.
Does someone know if via api it is possible to write our own custom events to the video stream? And easily search/find and jump to this custom tags in the video stream? This is useful for something like access control where I may want to jump to all videos of a certain users code/card being used to open doors. Thanks
What are your thoughts on the ds cam app? The app doesn’t seem to be able to distinguish between advanced events and motion events. If this was fixed it would greatly improve the overall experience with surveillance station.
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I should have clarified that I’m talking about the ds cam phone app. I don’t see any way to just get advanced or smart notifications such as people detection or vehicle. It just sends all the motion notifications no matter what it is. BTW, great videos and content in those videos. I appreciate the information and the effort.
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I am also interested in this. Can you configure that the DS mobile app only receives the Vehicle & Person mobile notifications? The default Synology motion detection notifications are useless. As they trigger on quick shadow changes & toggle of indoor lights.

Synology resource monitor does not report GPU performance, and that was the reason I doubted about iGPU utilization in AI/DL tasks.
This is perfect timing…I’ve been looking into this for the last 3 days
I've been meaning to set up a camera-based vehicle, pedestrian, and cycling counter on my street in addition to calculating travel speeds.
Great vid man, thanks for making it!

I have a DVA and it works well in my garage. Maybe try contacting support?

Update, my designed solution was chosen over other proposals. They opted for the DVA3221. I have a DVA 1622 for demo purposes though.

You have confirmed my decision. Thank you. 👍
Your LPR example is more than ideal - an oncoming very-slow moving vehicle is a no-brainer. I wonder how this unit would work out on that street for passing traffic
That's pretty cool thanks for sharing.
Also on DVA1622 having local console open (logged in) on HDMI port was adding about 20% of CPU load even without playing any videos.
Great video. How is the license plate reader at night time?
The amcrest camera night vision does a good job of seeing it, but obviously results may vary depending on angle of camera and what camera you have and how good the night vision is on it
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS cool thanks these looks like great units might pick one up

These recent price increases for everything are getting concerning. Every single thing.
Can face recognition be added to the DS923+ NAS?
You might want to double check in their forums but I don't think so.
Shame those advanced features are only available on DVA, just bought 1821+ and went for some overkill with ram/cache etc.... but not able to get those toys to play with.....bummer...hopefully they add it later with SW update.
they won't. This is an DVA feature becuase it needs special hardware.
@@vlaktorbb the DVA1622 has no special hardware…
