I have always been firmly in the position of "Clark Kent is the most interesting part of Superman" since, from my view, yeah without the identity of Clark Kent: a baby in a basket found on a doorstep, guy who spent the first 20+ years of his life in a small farm town doing dishes and homework and getting grounded for staying out too late on a school night, then became a freaking journalist in a big city, guy who has to deal with his entire culture being dead and being adopted into a new one, without all that Superman is just a guy who punches really damn hard. And dont get me wrong that is cool but it's only cool for like, 5 issues. It really feels like to me the Clark Kent half of the character is really where the Character is. Without him you dont have the same drama in the News Room, the witty snark in the JL, the the emotional connection between hero and civilians, you basically end up with that Superman Expy in Astro City or Metroman from megamind. Most of the narrative drama comes from being "some guy trying live his life who also happens to be Superman"
Anyway I cant wait for the next issue now because damn I want some of that Super Beefcake, I'm hoping for a nice shot of some Greek sculpted cheeks if you know where I'm going.

Seeing these people view and trying to figure out what’s Superman and what happened.
Future State really connective that you need all the stories to both really know and enjoy the story.
Also... I can’t lie these are how I see Superman. But for me... I see him as Power, Kindness, Justice and a bit of Clark.

  • @thomasdeja523

My view on Superman is basically he represents the Idealized Immigrant Experience in America--he comes from far away, rolls up his sleeves and says, 'Hey, thanks for letting me in....here is what I can do. How can I help?' Clark Kent would do that whether he had powers or not; those powers are just a tool he can use in his efforts to contribute to the betterment of the country.
This is why I think Superman is a much more relevant character than many people think he is, even more so after what we just went through here.

One of my favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series was "Legends of the Dark Knight", where three kids had different impressions of Batman. One thought he had wings and fangs; the second kid's uncle told him a tale of the Silver Age Batman vs. the Joker; the third told the tale of The Dark Knight Returns Batman fighting the Mutant leader. They encounter another kid named Joel, who imagined Batman with a rubber suit and a car that could climb walls; he is immediately deemed lame. This issue missed an opportunity to do the same with Superman.

Superman is many things to many people but there are aspects of the man that I don't think are really explored in the books. The "overpowered" vs. "the man" argument has been done a lot, but I've had some curious arguments over the years (since I'm a Superman fan). While I've had the "Superman can and should do anything he wants" Snyder take years before Man of Steel, the most interesting is the reverse of that. "Superman can be good because he has the power to be good. Regular people can't be as pure as Superman because of the fear of reprisal, where Superman can do anything without fear so if he wants to be pure good, he can." This argument makes me think about life to this day.

This is often a discussion I wind up having with others because I'm a lifelong Superman fan. And it's the common complaint about him is that he's boring or he can just solve any problem with his powers, but that's defining him BY his powers.
For me, there's a good reason that a mulititude of characters that have come along since his inception have failed: because it's Superman's *character* that makes him interesting, not his powers.
Think about how many knockoff Superman characters there have tried to be and none of them have the longevity and popularity of Clark Kent aka Superman.
He's good, he's kind, he's optimistic and humble, self-sacrificing and giving.
To which some might say 'boring', but in real life most people actually want to or are like that. And we always admire the people that act that way.
I welcome any comic or story that lets us reflect on Superman and what he means to us because we're also reflecting on ourselves, and that too is a very good thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this title, it gave you a retrospect of the Superman mythos and the pivotal question: who is Superman? The lack of action did not upset me but the narrative build-up to the War World storyline was compelling and well thought out. The artistic layout of the issue is beautiful and I hope they continue this style throughout this series. What bothers me is the lack of interconnecting storyline issues centered around the Metropolis heroes, unlike Gotham City heroes where each issue weaves an intricate web around The Batman. Maybe that is why there are smaller storylines integrated within each Superman title. To say the least, the side stories in Superman: War World were much more satisfying tales than the Superman of Metropolis ones. But the question remains: is Clark Kent Superman or is Superman Clark Kent?

I was down for this. Clark is the best part of Superman, though the power is important too. It's a good man doing good because he's good, but he also needs the power to back it up, to reassure people who see him that everything is going to be ok even they don't look like they will be. A man who will support truth and justice, but will take the time to talk you out of suicide or save your cat. The world needs Superman, and I kind of wish we had one.

I personally would have to agree with you, Sasha. I think that this first issue is really well done, but I do see why some people might view it as them being cheated. I got a very different vibe from the cover than I did the actual issue, but I completely understand what it's doing. It's setting up the story. I'm sure the next issue will give more of what people wanted, but I'm very pleased with what I got. After all, not every issue has to be all action all the time for me. There needs to be some room for quieter moments, for characters to just be, and to see the impact that the heroes have on others. :)

Soon as she found the group outside the memorial I thought of the Rick and Morty Story Train episode. "What is it with you people and your stories about Superman?" Also seems like evil Supes was referenced in the story about Kryptonians coming back to terraform earth and the fear surrounding it

This comic book looks really awesome I love how it's tearing the different personalities concepts and ideas the different sides of Superman apart how we get to them think of Superman as a person not just this concept that is basically just so alien that no one could like it because it's too alien it's not a good thing it's Superman so he's not relatable I think if this book is contained to be done right which so far it has been for me and that this could be one of the most relatable Superman books and can get a lot of people into it that being said you do have to have the right outlook on Superman you have to have a little bit of knowledge on Superman already and you either have to be really frustrated with Superman from being unrelatable or you have to be really really enjoying Superman but feel like it's missing something and really really loves Superman on some level or just like Superman but want to book like this I don't know I think this book will do really well

I hate cover-bait. As someone who initially got into comics because of the art cover-bait screams to me to buy it. Then I do. Because I am gullible and easily amused.
I’m also buying this book because you made it sound interesting. Those things are mutually exclusive... aren’t they?

  • @SuperMitchells1

I actually agree with sadies take on superman as a whole. The characterisation of who superman is by his hero identity and alter ego is what makes him interesting but his powers add a whole lot more to the story. But it largely depends on the writer, if someone can craft a good story around superman in a way that is thought provoking but also a digestible read for many than it can add so much more to everything that is superman. I honestly prefer the stories that wax philosophy every so often but don’t get me wrong I do enjoy the op muscleboi aspect of his character but that can make it cheap so it’s a fine line to cross.

To me, because he has all the powers, he has to be written as Clark Kent at the core to be interesting. A midwestern farm boy trying to be a hero. In contrast Batman without powers, has to be written as Batman. Bruce Wayne isn't even a person, just a mask. It's because these characters are such polar opposites that they work well together.

I can see why people could potentially be salty about the cover, but at the same time the way that it's been set up, I can see a war breaking out on earth over time. Whatever battle Superman is fighting eventually following him back home once he escapes, and either he has to prep the new Justice League to face off against War World, or the Magistrate expands it's reach and he has to help beat them down as well as the worlds people have built for themselves regarding how they see Superman, and by extension all other heroes, collide in spectacular fashion.... Wishful thinking, but we'll see what happens.

This was a very interesting comic because of the comic nerd debate, with a lot of ideas thrown around. But that cover is misleading.
Who is Superman and where did his value come from. Clark Kent vs Superman. Anyone else get a Superman 3 flashback?
I like the facial expressions in this book. This makes future state more interesting
