Maddie, I think it will look great when it's all styled. A suggestion that I ended up doing in my sitting room when painting a bold colour, paint the skirting board in a darker green. It gives a bit more dimension and breaks up one flat colour! Would love the giveaway for a family get together :) @rosie_roams
Hi Rosie! CONGRATULATIONS! You are today's winner for the giveaway! The first chosen winner didn't get back to me and I couldn't get I contact with them to retrieve this prize. So you have won the restaurant vouchers! Please email me on hello@madeleineolivia.co.uk with the subject "Vlogmas Day 15 Springtide and Longstore" with your name and address, and we can get your prize sent to you. If you are ok with making it public, please also share your email address with me here in your reply, or via DM's on instagram @madeleineolivia so I can confirm it is you xxx
As far as the repointing goes, as someone who has worked with historic stone, you need to make sure you get the right person who knows what they’re doing. DON’T EVER LET ANYONE PRESSURE WASH YOUR STONE. Find someone with certifications in preservation. I’m sure there are trade organizations that do that in the UK. They should remove the paint, give it a good clean with a quaternary ammonium based cleaner, and then use historically appropriate lime mortars and techniques. You’re right that the paint on the stone is causing major problems. You may also need to get the paint tested for lead, since it might be quite old, just to make sure it’s removed properly.
I’ve been researching repointing brick and stone for a project I am working on and I second OMGitsaClaire’s advice. Stone is porous, so you want it to be able to let water out, because no matter what you do, it will get wet. If you trap the water, it breaks down the mortar quicker and the stone when you have freezes. It also works it’s way into your house. So many modern products don’t work with traditional buildings. We build air tight now, which can totally rot or destroy a historic home when not done correctly or without thinking of the house as a whole system. Definitely there are a few options for historically trained stone masons in the UK, but their timelines may be booked months in advance. I think I would use whirly bird on the coving, and maybe a white or whirly bird main door to set it off, or even just add white to the green you are using. You’ve definitely inspired a tone on tone plan for the next bedroom I redecorate. But it is fun to have your guests stay in your very own “green” room.
Really good advice! Cornish granite is really special ~ something to do with the solidity and resilience...somehow very comforting :) Maybe in the Spring/ Summer it would be interesting to engage an architectural historian to give the house the 'once over' ~ to get some more insight into the design & construction and delve into its evolving history as a home.
@@glynnL You are correct. I’m trained in cemetery and gravestone conservation here in the US. Stone needs to breathe. It needs to be able to let moisture in and out and expand and contact with fluctuations in temperature which paint doesn’t let it do. And modern Portland cement type mortars can be harmful because they don’t bond to stone in the same ways and they are also harder than the stone in some cases which can cause problems. Proper guttering and repointing with a lime-based mortar (preferably mixed with locally sourced masonry sand) will give you the most authentic look while protecting your home. And then a good clean every 5-10 years with an approved biologic cleaner to kill off any moss, mildew, or algae should keep the stone in good shape.
I would definitely recommend running a dehumidifier in the area you are drying clothes, it is amazing the amount of water they suck out of the air. It really speeds up the drying time.
I totally think once you have furniture and decor in, you’ll know you made the right decision. It’s a lovely green, and I think it will look amazing on all the spots you painted it.
I would suggest vinegar and water to use on the mold. Because its a living thing you need to disrupt the cells and vinegar works awesome. Bleach won't do much to fully kill the mold like vinegar will
I love the green, it does look good, I am a bit unsure of coving and door being green but in my 51 years I came to a way of thinking a few years ago, it's your home if you love it keep it, I don't live in your home however I sure would love too as its beautiful ❤️ ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I think once you get it another coat and maybe beautiful crisp white bedding.... and other soft touches ...it will be fabulous..like you said you can always paint it back white on the wood work... It good when you feel you need to continue...and see the end result. 👍😉
Keeping in mind what you said about not drying clothes upstairs, if you'd stil like to use this room occasionally in the cold season for drying the laundry, I'd recommend looking into getting a de-humidifier :)
The December list sounds like a great plan - this is basically what I've done with my last two houses. It's worth it to hire a certified house inspector, who will give you a detailed list of the current condition of your house. This gives you a comprehensive list to work from, and you often can do the work as you can afford it. And somehow, when you have it all on paper, it's easier to prioritize things. Any roof or water intrusion issues always come first..... And to know a professional has given you the all clear on the expensive things is a real comfort when you get to the fun things, like wall colors and furnishings. Your instincts are good about the green color - to furnish the room and see what you think. As you already know, interior design of your own house is an ever evolving, gradual process. Have fun and have a lovely Christmas!
Love the green! I think it elevates the room when the walls, doors and trim are the same colour ✨ I personally would have kept the windowsill white just so the light coming through the window has something to bounce off, but that’s just me, and I bet it’s gonna look fab when it’s done! 😍
Oh I LOVE that shade of green. We're thinking of using it for our nursery and seeing it on your walls has me convinced it's right. Especially once you get bedding and pictures in, it'll look so complete and cozy.
Love the green. I'll be honest, I find that each time I paint a room, I always find the ceiling--no matter how fine it seemed before--suddenly looks dingy and needs doing, too! Cool Yule, and thank you for taking me on your journey! Love from Buffalo, New York! 🏠🏠🎄🎄☃☃❄❄☕☕🎅🎅💖💖
You should keep the green but have one of those whitish flowery wallpapers on one of the walls! Then you’ll have the green of the walls matching the flower stems and the lighter colour of the background 🤩
Firstly, I love the color. Secondly, I always paint the ceiling the same color. Agree, when you add your decor, it breaks up the color and becomes what you envisioned.
Love the green! I personally like having a contrast, so I would keep the trim and window sill white, but that's just me. I am sure it's going to be gorgeous because your style is beautiful.
Thinking about it I personally would want a designated area to hang the washing where it's not in the way of an actual living space. If I were you I'd take the chance in the utility reno to create a space for that. Where I live we also hang our washing outside in winter when it doesn't rain. At least my grandma used to do it. you might need to transfer the rack back inside sometimes, but nothing beats the freshness of laundry dried in winter air.
I absolutely LOVE a green room, but maybe there's such a thing as too much green. I wouldn't have painted the doors or windowsill green, but if you can see yourself looking at it and loving it every day, then that's all that matters 🩷
I think the room is going to look amazing once your pictures, side tables, bedding and other decor are added. It’s a beautiful green. It will be lovely and soothing to sleep there.
Hi, I love that it’s not just me that has multiple names for their dog ! We have a chocolate brown working cocker spaniel called Charlie. He also gets called Pooky, Boo & Podgy Paws ! He definitely responses to Boo as well as Charlie ! 😁🐶
Great job on painting the room. Here in the states, we never paint the baseboards/skirting as you called them there the same color as the walls (or the crown molding.…the top one) … not sure if that is normal to do in England but I feel that it is better to accentuate those moldings keeping them white and not make them blend with the same color. The moldings, in my opinion, are special and should be showed off and not blended with the rest. But of course it is your home and you do as you wish. Love seeing your progress.
I love the green, but for me it’s a bit much everywhere. However, it’s not my home and if you love it then it’s all that matters! Can’t wait to see it all dressed❤
Honstly I would have let the skirting, coving and doors white. BUT you will see the result at the end when the furniture and decoration stuff, curtains and so on are in the room. It could look very good togher!
Fantastic plan ahead and love the colour. This really is inspiring me to just get done painting the kitchen. Just need my baby girl to be a little older so I have more than a few minutes here and there and can just get cracking. I just have to laugh at the fact that you both can use short rollers for your fairly high ceilings. There is me midget with an extender pole and a step when we were painting our house 😂
Did you consider an accent wall covered in a gorgeous wallpaper? You probably could find some on FB marketplace. Also, if the whole wall isn't feasible, you could place wp in a decent sized frame & hang it behind the bed or wherever. I do like the color though. Happy Holidays!
I love the colour to be honest. I honestly dislike vivid white. What contrast or complimentary colours are you going to use in the decore? Rose or gold?
The bedroom looks beautiful. We used green smoke in our bedroom we kept the coving doors and skirting white .. im looking forward to seeing your bedroom finished . Im struggling with what colour curtains to get . I don't want more green but nothing I see seems to go . Thanks for a great vlog x
Love the colour! Surprised you did paint the coving 😅 but its stunning!! Painting coving or avoiding painting the coving is tricky so i understand why you painted it green too! Its different and i love it 😍
Better not spray anything directly onto the moldy area. A professional told me once, by doing that the spores might get pushed in the air before you can kill them. Better spray into a cloth and then wipe the area.
I have soo many names for each (two) of our cats. I choose to think that's why they ignore me! The green will be broken up more by your soft furnishings, but it looks really great. We love Farrow and Ball paints, they last so well and look like new after several years xx

It'll be surprising once you put curtains up, bed and all the other bits in place. That colour looked more teal/turquoise at the start of the vlog. At the end it looked more green.
Oh sick! I've never been to Cornwall and it's one of the farthest places from my original home in Aus (live in London now), so that would be fun to go to what is more or less the antipode of Geelong! It would be perfect to cap it off with a lovely local restaurant or two when I do go down. N.B.: No Insta, no TT. Don't know if too cool or not cool enough!
Just a note on killing mold. On a This Old House episode, an expert showed that bleach only bleaches out the color of the mold. So he used hydrogen peroxide to actually kill the mold. Love the colour you’ve picked! We had a little bit of damp/mould in our bedroom this winter (also live in an old house) and I actually found white vinegar did a really good job of getting rid of it, as apparently is kills some mould spores in porous materials but bleach can only do the surface, so would definitely recommend 😊
Love the Longstore! Best French toast ever. Love the green, we’ve just painted our room in a similar green and like u said when everything is in it looks incredible xx
The Astonish Mould and Mildew spray is one of the best products I’ve used in my cottage. You always encourage me to get going with my home and look for things to do up or decorate. Always enjoy your vlogs Madeleine thank you. P.S still cooking the spicy Jambalaya dish!!
Maddie I love the green! I live in Sussex but my sister in-law lives just outside Newquay and I’d love to win the restaurant vouchers so that I can give them to her! 🥰🥰 Xxx
I have never been to Longstore nor Springtide! I am trying the reduce meat in my meal so I would love to eat professional vegan meal and get inspired :) I like the colour btw!
Hi I love the green! I’ve not been brave enough, to go for a bold colour. But I might after your video. I’d love to win the meal. I never get out much with my husband. I have disabilities that interfere with going out. I live in Cornwall. Thank you. Love yr Chanel x 17:04
Brilliant choice colour and doing trim n doors too, so upscale and allows accessories to shine🤩. Can’t wait to see your fabric choices. Simply gorgeous💖
Love the vlogmas videos, in fact love your channel, watched since you started. As I don’t live near Cornwall ( northeast Scotland) if I were to win please donate to a charity for someone’s Christmas. You and Alex have an amazing , well deserved Christmas break with your family. X
I had no idea air drying your clothes in a bedroom causes moisture build up😮wow I had no idea so where’s the best place then to air dry your clothes during the winter months?
Hoping to get back to the UK for my 70th birthday, my daughter is gifting me the trip and we will go together. As my Dad was born in Plymouth, we hope to get to Cornwall for sure. This gift would be fabulous! Cheers! @britbabe53
Love the colour Maddie. I wasn’t sure and in my head I would have done the doors or skirting in white but is that being conditioned to do. Would love to be entered for the vouchers. Based in Padstow and wanting to get about the county more to places that I wouldn’t necessarily go to obs not Truro!!!
I’d probably go with ebony or mahogany colours for the doors & leave the skirting & coving the same colour as all one colour gives that sense of height. It’s a dramatic difference but I’m sure you’ll love it in the next days/weeks. Looks much more cosy to me & ties in with the garden too xx
Definitely went for the right green! Makes me want to go bolder with my colours in my house! 💚 We love the longstore having only been there a couple of times but food and service has always been great! 🥰 merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🏻✨ @hosabel
Maddie, I think it will look great when it's all styled. A suggestion that I ended up doing in my sitting room when painting a bold colour, paint the skirting board in a darker green. It gives a bit more dimension and breaks up one flat colour!

Yes I’ve literally just done this. I painted my spare room and now the ceiling looks grey 😮
Yes, that green will add a nice punch of colour to the room. Good 1st choice, Alex!
Love the green! I personally like having a contrast, so I would keep the trim and window sill white, but that's just me. I am sure it's going to be gorgeous because your style is beautiful.
I keep the doors white as well the brim on the celling, more Dimension
Green is my favorite color, so I'm all in with your choice. Must say I do like that blue as well, thinking it would make a nice ceiling color.

Oh my goodness the cats curled up is so precious ❤❤❤
I love the green and the blue paint. All green is to much. I would use a Cream color or off white for the trim, doors, Crown mounding, window sill.
I love the green and as you said, it isn’t permanent. You’ve really inspired me to tackle some DIY something we have been too scared to do before! X

Yes!!! Seems like it will all come together and be amazing!!!!
Love the colour! Surprised you did paint the coving 😅 but its stunning!! Painting coving or avoiding painting the coving is tricky so i understand why you painted it green too! Its different and i love it 😍
Love the green you chose,it’s going to be beautiful when you get the furniture back in,great job!!!
Is it ok to paint all the different surfaces with the wall paint? I usually choose wood paint for door, metal paint for radiator...
You should get mould paint and do that first before your top coat.
I love the green, but would have painted the doors and skirting white to contrast. But you can easily change that if you change your mind. Xx
Better not spray anything directly onto the moldy area. A professional told me once, by doing that the spores might get pushed in the air before you can kill them. Better spray into a cloth and then wipe the area.

I love the green! We have a green kitchen and I think it makes the room look so rustic and country 😍😍
I love the whole thing green. It looks so decorator grade!
I'd paint the door in a light pinky shade like setting plaster and paint the window sill white

Love the green. Doors and trims white IMO
Merry Christmas season Madeleine. I was wondering, why not get a clothes dryer?
It'll be surprising once you put curtains up, bed and all the other bits in place. That colour looked more teal/turquoise at the start of the vlog. At the end it looked more green.
I love the green! It's going to be such a cosy room!
Crazy! MY Alexa came on when you asked your Alexa to play your song!
Love, love, love this green ❤❤❤❤ very beautiful.
🎄🎄🎄🎄Were you singing: 'Greensleeves' as you painted?🎄🎄🎄🎄
Yay a new video!!!
Just a note on killing mold. On a This Old House episode, an expert showed that bleach only bleaches out the color of the mold. So he used hydrogen peroxide to actually kill the mold. But I would recommend you get an expert's opinion on percentage and any other ingredients to use. I bought some non-oxygen bleach for my laundry and it is hydrogen peroxide. Also I have Invisalign braces; and I found that to clean them I use a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in water in a small dish and just drop them into the solution while I take the braces out to eat.
Love the green 🫶🏻💚
That was a very interesting Vlogmas. Would love to try todays giveaway.
Love the Longstore! Best French toast ever.
Love the green, we’ve just painted our room in a similar green and like u said when everything is in it looks incredible xx
Maddie we like the green.❤🌲
I would love to win the vouchers! I am visiting Cornwall in February ❤️🔥❤️🔥
I’m a uni student living in Falmouth and would love to try some restaurants in Truro x
🥰🥰 Xxx
Love the green room!
I have never been to Longstore nor Springtide! I am trying the reduce meat in my meal so I would love to eat professional vegan meal and get inspired :) I like the colour btw!
Wow what a lot of green
Lovely 🥰 💙💙💙
I don't think you made an error, it's a lovely green.
Hi I love the green! I’ve not been brave enough, to go for a bold colour. But I might after your video. I’d love to win the meal. I never get out much with my husband. I have disabilities that interfere with going out. I live in Cornwall. Thank you. Love yr Chanel x 17:04
Hi Maddie, I’d love to have it x😊
love this!
Brilliant choice colour and doing trim n doors too, so upscale and allows accessories to shine🤩. Can’t wait to see your fabric choices.
Simply gorgeous💖
Love that colour ..
I love green, but its a bit too much, but maybe with accessories it will look completely different
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Too much green. Repaint doors and trim for contrast.
Love the vlogmas videos, in fact love your channel, watched since you started. As I don’t live near Cornwall ( northeast Scotland) if I were to win please donate to a charity for someone’s Christmas. You and Alex have an amazing , well deserved Christmas break with your family. X

I would do doors white, never seen doors no walls same color. Need to break it up a bit or you get swallowed up.
Cheers! @britbabe53

Omg in earlyyy!!! Its so stress trying to think of what to comment
We love the longstore having only been there a couple of times but food and service has always been great! 🥰 merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🏻✨ @hosabel
