I have driven this car with the 1.4 petrol for 2500kms in Italy over the past13 days. I find the engine very tractable which is necessary when pulling away from tights corners. There is not a huge turbo lag! It pulls well from 1500 rpms and up. The car is so quiet on the highway! I find it stable and with good on centre feel and turn in. Overall I am quite impressed.
Dear Sir, I carefully listened to your comments and words about the eye of the hyundai i30. Let me comment on your unprofessional and impartiality in your evaluation of the hyundai brand's real offer. I understand that you only talk about your impressions, but given that you have the task to evaluate the vehicle for future customers, I advise you to be much more professional and not under the influence of other brands of which they are of no better quality. They only have a tradition of their name that has become obsolete over the years and therefore only a high price does not mean real quality. I continue to wish you many successes and pleasures of testing the new cars of all brands.
Golf? A premium car? Honnney, even here in South East Asia where car prices are sky high, the Golf's pricing is equivalent to that of a Toyota Corolla. Don't get blinded by the badge.
I run a new i10 alongside a BMW M140i and being my first Hyundai I'm pleasantly surprised by this brand, fit and finish, build quality what you get for the money combined with 5 years warranty, what isn't there to like.
From a i30 owner I agree with most of what he said ...the car has massive turbo lag it hates eneven roads gearbox is very very notchy and even crunches in 1st to 2nd if you try to gear down too fast it dosnt really like gear changes and would be better in auto as the manual has no more "feel" This car is a real cruiser at heart because the gearbox doesn't like to be changed too fast your reduced to be unsporty with it. Good points are it's a good on the motorway it's a motorway car and is happiest in 6th gear cruising it's very comfortable and has good stability around back roads good traction. I live in the countryside and it's fine but I find spares are difficult to source like discs (which only lasted 30.000) as their are 2 types and u.k. is not yet used to Korean cars. So you get advised to go to the main dealer a lot which is very expensive. For a 30.000 mile service they wanted over £400 it's a light service with only the oil and filter changed and a run thru the check list I got it done for £150. Major service is at 40.000 when it will be much more expensive. The navigation unit is a bit of an eyesore and don't use the sat Nav on it as it's hopeless. Why don't car companies use Google which is far superior You would think I hate this car but I don't it's just that it needs a lot of improvement that's why it's life came to an end I guess.
Well , damn , I went to a test drive in the i30 with the 1.4 turbo engine and it was really good , I'm 1.88 m tall( ~6.18 ft tall) and not that slim and I had enough head and leg room
James I think that you are exaggerating. I had to leave my Focus at the dealer as the engine nearly exploded. I rented this exact i30. I think it is more comfortable in town ( I did not even have a Zetec-S Focus), quiet and I don't think that the controls are that numb after all(I agree on the clutch feel though). However the car provides a serene environment, stress free and Lord it does have a better reliability record that this damn Focus.
I agree with you on the clutch pedal. All Hyundai/Kia's I've driven have had terribly numb clutch pedals with absolutely no feel what so ever on where the biting point is. I always feel like a learner idiot when I drive a Hyundai or Kia cause often have a tendency to stall.
Good review J. The flaws are relatively minor (and may not even matter to the average motorist) but they are something that Hyundai could easily address for their 2018 cars. Similar negative comments on steering and handling were made about the first ix35, however the revised one was substantially improved. I have owned both and the revised version drives like a different car entirely and is much better. Keep up the excellent reviews. :-)
I always though Hyundai was rubbish. Never owned one though. Ive now owned a 2017 i30 1.6T (SR) for a bit over 6 months, almost 15 thou km's on it, and I love it. Sure the clutch takes a bit to get used to at first, (you hardly stall it like this guy suggests, unless you dump it out, but that's L plate level driving) but if you are an experienced manual driver it doesn't take long to adapt, and works well for quick shifts. Like I said I wasn't sure about this brand for a long time, but after trying out this model it's well made overall for a Hyundai , interior is decent quality for the price, no rattles at all, quite solid. The Turbo 1.6 is great for this size car, has a nice intake sound. Good value for money.
Why is James Batchelor so negative about this car? Other car review videos all gave positive ratings. Why is he saying that this car is soggy and numb? I got so angry after watching this video.
I really liked this channel, but now in every video you just say how good Volkswagen is and that every other car isn't as good, so this channel is really is going down! The i30 is too bland you say?!and the golf is great you say and that is the blandest car in the world! One more review like this and I won't be a subscriber anymore!
What the actual fûck is going on in the comment section? Sure, he compares the i30 a lot to the Golf. Because it’s the main competition!... It doesn’t have very good road feel and the interior is a bit dull. But for people that can’t care less of such things and just want a comfortable and modern luxury ass hauler, this is actually a great car. James even went ahead and recommended it. I don’t get why you idiots hate him.
Jake lets reply like one of his reviews the presentet appears smug when he gets up to speed and comes across as a toff with his brownshoe trims. People dont find him relatable unlike The previous two models/presenters who presented with charisma. Should you want to invest time in this model dont bother you can find better elsewhere.
I bought 2017 brand new Seat Leon ST 1.0 DSG and I changed it after 90 000 kms for new Hyundai i30 wagon 1.4 turbo DCT. Leon St was great car but ride comfort was the worst part was suspension. It was too stiff. Of cource Seat interriors are nicer than in Hyundai. What he said about steering feel. The latest car which had steering feel was mine first car, Toyota Corolla from the year 1992! One one plus thing I got 7-years unlimited warranty in my car!
Excellent balanced review. I'm sure the i30 will be a good car but I just find the design just doesn't grab me. They've been hyping this up in NZ where Hyundai have become quite expensive, that's before the dealer knocks 5K off the price.
I had I30 2016. for 25000km. Yea, u dont impress young girls with it, and i was pretty biased like my friends. But i have to say, its good car...but look, how i30 looks like in 2009 f.a and look at golf in 2009 and then move to present...new golf 7 and this i30. In february im going to pick up new golf but trust me, I could not decide which car i have to choose, i30 or golf. After couple of rides with both models with same specification, I choose golf. Little bit looks better, and i prefer simple golf design(boring yea). So it was about personal preferencies. But heats off for i30...
I notice when sitting in the front and back how high his knees were. So he,s basically just sitting on his spine, his legs are not taking any weight off his backside. Ok for very small people I suggest.
@@han666 I'm 1. 70 something tall and after setting the front seat to my height when I sit at the back my knees touch the hard back rest so very unconfortable. Also front seats seem a bit narrow.
he seemed certain he was going to have this car from the off! with the value, the after care+warranty what's not to like I think they look nice (as nice as other cars in class anyway). overly well speced in respect of higher price competitors cars. an appalling review!
Not really, the insides of this car are boring. And it has serious issues with the clutch. They also say it is one of the most silent cars out there. But like a proper idiot, you only hear the negatives and not the positive that this is a long distance driving car rather than a town car, and in that market one of the safest, most reliable, silent and comfortable you can get for that price. What else should he have said? Squee and do a striptease on the hood saying "Hyundai I love you!" for you to be satisfied?
lol, if a Golf is a premium car why did VW have to make an actual premium edition of it in the form of an Audi A3? Common dude, even VW itself is starting to feel their lack of premium image. In fact workers in VW factories are now asking to produce Skoda's in German factories because they are loosing customers to it in large numbers. VW has overproduction problems on all of their models, while you have to wait months for your newly ordered Skoda. Even VW knows this. Every new chassis format they launch these days is launched under either Seat, Audi or Skoda (f.e. the new Polo platform is already released in the Seat Ibiza) People who care for badges and quality shift up to Audi. People who care about value for money go Skoda. People who care about design and younger image go Seat. VW is loosing customers because they fail to stand out on either side of the spectrum.
Let's not hate James for this one shall we? I actually agree with this review. I really like modern Hyundai's; I'm not a badge snob and judge a car based off of the things that actually matter. The tuscon, I10, I20, I40 etc are really good. The previous generation I30 was also really good, but this one is quite frankly disappointing,
Comparing this car to a car that for similar spec in Sweden cost around 6-7k pounds more. What do you mean competing with the big boys. How is this a competition
The previous i30 was a much more interesting design, I think Hyundai have played it far too safe with this one. The reason for interiors being black is that it cuts down on reflections in the windscreen, if they added wood it wouldn't be real, or carbon fibre or aluminium, so they're damned if so & damned if don't.
I'm done with this channel. How is a Volkswagen with the same bland interior acceptable and not this car? Nothing but a bunch of badge snobs from Carbuyer.
Just fuck off to CarWoW already then. Seriously it is getting tiresome by now. James does a good job and has a calm and pleasant way of explaining things. He spend quite a bit of time on both the good and the bad of the car and it was all well argumented. Just buzz off or just follow both channels really. The amount of hate James gets from guys like you is just, annoying and fucked up by now.
Europeans can't get over VW. Give it up, Korea's creeping up and will surpassed German cars. About 90% Europeans reviews on RUclips shit on this car, haters

I agree, Golf is not in the same class
'the interior is black and therefore dull' What do you want, a green and yellow interior??
How about some colour to chose from?
He likes neon green
i think he means, Anything to spruce up interor, like an interesting radio or colored spedomiter anything somewhat interesting to look at on the dash
Black is nice black is elegant..

A major reason for buying a Hyundai is its incredible reliability that they are known for.
He didn’t like it from the start so he made sure we didn’t
Most biased review I've ever seen seriously
Golf? A premium car? Honnney, even here in South East Asia where car prices are sky high, the Golf's pricing is equivalent to that of a Toyota Corolla. Don't get blinded by the badge.
Price is not the thing that makes something feel "premium", otherwise anything would not be premium because Rolls-Royce exist
That’s because when it comes to the maintenance of a Golf, it’ll be like you’re paying similar to a premium car. 🤣
Why does the Golf always get away with being average and dull, yet this car has a 'dull' interior and its the worst thing ever...?
Atleast Hyundai ar3 reliabl3
Quality
Reputation
I run a new i10 alongside a BMW M140i and being my first Hyundai I'm pleasantly surprised by this brand, fit and finish, build quality what you get for the money combined with 5 years warranty, what isn't there to like.
I wonder how much VW paid him to run this car down.
its better than the renaults, peugeots, the focus and many more.
Well the Golf doesn't exactly set the world alight does it James. The Golf premium. I don't think so
From a i30 owner I agree with most of what he said ...the car has massive turbo lag it hates eneven roads gearbox is very very notchy and even crunches in 1st to 2nd if you try to gear down too fast it dosnt really like gear changes and would be better in auto as the manual has no more "feel" This car is a real cruiser at heart because the gearbox doesn't like to be changed too fast your reduced to be unsporty with it. I'd choose this over a Golf any day. It's cheaper, more reliable and better looking in my opinion.
When was the last time you saw a Hyundai broken down at the side of the road? I don’t t think I need to say anymore
Very well equipped, good reliability, looks nice, good price. That's what I want. Black plastic? Who give a fu..k!!!
In the real world you can get these in the U.K. from online brokers with 20%+ discount...that does perhaps change the buying decision!
I think I would rather keep moving in this, than sit in my broken down VAG car stroking the soft touch plastics!!
Does this thing come with an automatic? Is it any good? There was no mention of that ...
Dont let this guy drive the i30n
😂
what a effin biased review
did you say jetta and premium in the same sentence? that's the biggest joke i've heard for the day.
I think you have some problem with Hyundai or something??

This guy has got to be a brexiteer tory. Those boatshoes give it away. Thats why you cant feel the bite point.
HaaHaa great comment on a shit review

A pound shop Quentin Willson. It's actually a good all round car. Golfs are overrated and expensive.
god the normal i30 and the i30 N is a night and day difference... Albert really did work his magic on i30N
These comments are almost as negative as his review.
He reluctantly praised it up whilst looking to run it down.
Trust me if dis was made by germans or brits, dis guy will be allll praises! Clearly u guys dont like korean technology no matter how good it is!
Or perhaps this car is just not particularly good. Had you thought of that? i10 and other Koreans get praised & recommended.

love it better then most of expensive suvs
Ok, im late for the show....but ive seen plenty of other reviews saying no noticeable turbo lag...so which is it ?
Doesn't seem a biased review to me at all. Fairly judged - lots of ups and downs mentioned.

Black is the best color for the interior plastic. Try selling any other color interior second hand and see what happens
Golf premium class hmm?
Poor view
How much vs golf price.? Compare to Mercedes b class instead.
I notice when sitting in the front and back how high his knees were. So he,s basically just sitting on his spine, his legs are not taking any weight off his backside. Ok for very small people I suggest.
He tends to sit very near the steering wheel, so there is actually less rear space than he says.

So far almost every Hyundai i30 review I watched looked biased.
Why is he so NEGATIVE about this car??? Does James Batchelor and Carbuyer hate Hyundai???
They are just mad because they didn't get invited to the i30 N launch.

Because the whole press are just puppets of VW.

Embarassing? More than this review?
You can tell it was designed by the same person who used to design VW Golfs. I think the old one looks a lot better.
Haha 😂 Australia get a 1.6lt turbo petrol with 201HP. Why would Hyundai give the UK such rubbish choice?
David Lauw and yet here in the uk we’ve now got the 2 litre turbo charged 250 bhp i30N. Not such a rubbish choice now eh?!
Such a small pp energy guy
why the f you want all car brands to be luxories how ever you say that, i dont want that this is why i buy i30

This seems like a well built car. Technology and hardware look great.
