As a teenager, my dad built a new milkhouse for our 100 cow herd. What was unique was we had a hot water heater w/ tank and a much larger hot water tank. The larger tank and the milkhouse heater were both heated by the milk. As part of the "cooling" of the milk, the heat extracted heated things. We basically had unlimited hot water and heat. It was a great design.

We had a barn with bound up cows, the old way, in there it was the best place to be during wintertime when working outside, going in there, in the warmth, cuddle a warm cow, best thing ever! Our barn had a pretty low ceiling, so even in minus 30-32F it was warm in there 🙂 The best tractor we had to start in the winter was our small Deutz-Fahr 52 horse aircooled engine started even without heaters, the Ford 7810 we prefered to use the block heater connected to them, they always started what temp there ever was, it was a blessing to have them, warm and nice inside when plowing the roads, but being in the barn during those times when milking, was the best place to keep you warm. Our workshop had a big diesel heater that also dried the grain bins.
So many memories, and I am so happy to see these things, it brings my soul comfort to hear the milking parlour and all the cows🥰

The "gold standard" when I lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was the "outdoor hockey rink, shut down the change shack at -10° F". That basically meant that we had the rink to ourselves when temperatures dropped below that. . . . We did not notice the cold when we were younger. Wear something on your face when it gets cold. Imagine it getting so cold that milk freezes in the udder. . . . udder nonsense for sure. 😮 Keep warm. I use Sorel boots when it gets cold. Remember, warm feet, . . . warm heart.

People who don’t have livestock don’t realize how hard it is to do the usual chores when it it cold outside. Things break and batteries do not do as well and fuel doesn’t flow like it should. Things that usually take 15 minutes take 1 hr. Besides that you get warm from moving faster then you stop moving then you get cold.
On the light side. When dad and I milked 10 cows by hand. We always had Bag Balm on our hands and that kept the cows happy and our hands from chapping. Take care of yourself and family. God Bless.

I use a walk behind snow blower to make paths between buildings when deep snow comes. I'm sure you are thinking that would never start but it has electric start and always starts easily to my surprise. Just a little luxury makes brutal winter weather a little easier. I first got the path making idea from the Amish in my area that use a horse pulling a home made snow blade.

These cold snaps are really the only time I curse my ancestors for settling in Michigan. Most of our stuff runs around the clock so we don’t worry about it starting but the big heated shop is nice for those hard starting machines on the extremely cold nights. Anyone that thinks new equipment is better hasn’t worked in our climate much, we have more problems with the new tractors/loaders and skid steers than we ever did with the old stuff. We’re further north than you and I believe our coldest temps were around -11 with windchills in the low -30s for a few of those days last week. Frozen overhead doors and some ignorant malfunctioning automatic curtains made for some long days.

It's beginning to look a lot like Winter, But soon we'll have a thaw. With freezing rain and sleet we'll have a crust on the snow and it'll refreeze and be there till spring. Ah Michigan. That vapor cloud slowly rolling into the parlor looked like a scene right out of one of those old Black and White "B" science fiction movies with Vincent Price, Boris Karloff Charles Laughton, Kathleen Freeman etc
A battery maintainer is very inexpensive doesn't use much electricity, but will keep a battery right up at the top. Also electric oil pan heaters you slap on the bottom of the engine, since heat rises will help start a Diesel. ben/ michigan

It's been pretty chilly here in northeastern Connecticut the last few days during the day it's been in the upper teens and then around zero at night. As I get older, I have learned to prepare ahead of time run the diesel fuel treatment get stuff plugged in plan ahead and not struggle like I used to. We haven't had too much as far as issues go here. I think the worst thing this winter for me has been when it's been 50° three or 4 inches of rain and 60 mph winds I almost would prefer everything just to be frozen instead of dealing with that lol. Good video I liked your explanation of the heat in the parlor. That's pretty cool.

Yeah, that cold snap really made things difficult for us too, while feeding the cows, my son had issues with the tractor lifting the big round bales. We had -7 degree's and not near the snow you all had, we plugged the heater on the tractor for over 2 hours before we used it, not easy or fun. Good to see they got the tractor going, having the 4 wheel drive helps in the snow. Good luck for the up and coming weather systems coming in. I hope you all have a safe and nice week ahead.

At that temperature I'm amazed the cows aren't giving you ice cream. Back when I was young. I would go to work with my father to help him get the trucks started when it was cold. There was no such thing as a block heater or glow plugs. What he would do is. He had a bunch of aluminum saucer sleds. He would start a charcoal fire on them and slide them under the engine to warm the oil so the engine would turn over quicker. It's 12 degrees here and hopefully it's the last night of extreme cold.

This brought back memories of some of the winters At least you still had power. Remember one year we were without power for 5 days. Temps were in single digits, ton of snow and we shut the generator off about 10pm, and I prayed every morning about 5am that the tractor would start so I could hook up to the pigtail on the pole and get heat back on in the house and power to milk. A shot of ether in a JD 3020 and it started ever time. Pray for all my friends that have to work in this weather and who are taking care of their animals.

We hit -33 Last week during the storm. My tractor wouldn’t start. Hydraulics were all froze up. Thankfully we didn’t get very much snow. When you’re used to using tractors to move snow and something happens it sure changes your perspective when you can’t use it the next time you want to. I finally got it to start today a week after the cold spell. I had so much gel in the lines that I couldn’t do anything about it. Congratulations on getting it running. I worked on the dairy farm for a few years, it’s a lot more work than what people realize. thanks for the video Rhonda.

My Dad never wanted a heater in the parlor during milking, only when the cows weren't in it. In Northern VA, we don't get the low temps y'all have, but have had spells in the teens or 20's for highs. I don't Dairy anymore, but have found that a balaclava is nice, it's a hood and turtleneck that can be brought up to cover your face. I wear my regular work shoes and pullover boots, but use wool or low temp socks for my feet. Again, not as cold, but y'all might try some of them. Good luck, God Bless, and great video!

Back in the 60's and 70's, we milked Holsteins. Our barn had wooden stanchions in it. When it got cold (35 degrees F or colder), we would keep the cows in the barn. I always thought it looked neat, when the cobwebs would get frosty from the cows breathing and the cold air. We also had to keep our tractor and manure spreader in the barn to keep it from freezing up. We had gutters behind each row of cows. Had to scoop out the gutters morning and night, and then made a quick run out to the field in late afternoon (when it was usually warmer), and hoped that the manure spreader didn't freeze before we could start spreading manure. We had an old Allis-Chalmers WC tractor, and a New Idea manure spreader. They would just fit in the barn between the gutters.
