+Elijah Torres That can be true. I meant that society in general is much more open to it. Thirty years ago, the AIDS epidemic was making it very hard for us to be out of the closet. We could get fired from our jobs, lose our apartments, and get beat up in the streets. Much progress has been made.
Your welcome. But, honestly, I was no activist. I just lived my life, tried to be a good person, treated others decently, and tried to show people that we gays are not much different from everyone else. Still, it wasn't always easy. Lol. But, life never is.
He's so positive and a good role model for youths. I'm not gay so I would never fully understand but I could imagine it would be so hard for a teen to find a role model who is successful and open. Also, side note, he's so cute LOL...I'm sorry!!! I'm female and I found myself starring at him haha... honest opinion ._.
Greg Louganis did this in the early 90's and didn't have it so good. Good for Gus for doing this and making the video for people to come out in sports. Sports is extremely homophobic. Gus is a very handsome man... This will help him market himself.
Great messages, nice smile..... P.S. My mum didn't know. I told her when I was 18. Maybe if Gus did likewise at that age she might not have known either.
Think of it as a 'face' that represents you and your community so that others will have a more positive outlook as opposed to the rampant negativity of homosexuality that have been generated over the years.
When he said that it's best just to get it off your shoulders I felt so emotional. I don't know whether or not I am straight or gay or bi. I grew up a Christian and I love God and my commitment to Him ales me want to continue on the path that my parents and my Christian lifestyle have laid out for me but I'm so scared that I might be gay. I don't want to be like that and even though I support people like gus and am glad that they know who they are, my lifetime values and morals don't give me the choice to be anything but straight. It's not like I'm denying myself (because I'm not sure what I am) it's more like my will to stay faithful to my religion keeps conflicting with a nagging little voice in my head and the views of the world
Just know that although your religion is important to you, you should always recognize finding yourself and who you are. I'm not that religious, but I know that no matter what the Bible says, God will love you. So many people are going to tell you differently but when you have a whole community lifting you up, it just will validate you so much more. I haven't come out formally, some of my friends know but accepting and embracing who you are is so important. If your family and friends really love you, they will accept you for being gay/bi. As a society we've come so far in accepting those who come out and even if you were taught that "being gay is a sin", so many other things are sins, too, but we have grown out of them in society. It is ok to "grow out" of the standard that being gay is a sin. You cannot change who you are. And it's ok to be who you are. Sorry if that was confusing :/
avery wagner thank you for your answer but I think I'll just need to think this out on my own. My religion and love for God is more important to me than anything else so I don't want to stray away from that but I also don't want to live a life full of denial. Thank you
You are awesome and I believe the first major celebrity in your sport to come out! LGBTQ folks (including me) in NW PA think you are awesome! Keep doing what your are doing!
yes!!!another boy sorry ladies but the labs will have him or me.ha ha like to see the good ones are either married in jail or gay so basically download secretly gay are in the closet
I think it is harder for young men today, as they feel the need to 'confess' to complete strangers by 'coming out'? Why be so ashamed of yourself that you have to make a statement and accept the label that society wants you to put on yourself. In my day coming out never even crossed my mind? I just live my life, and my sexuality never even crosses my mind? It is hardly a defining factor? It's pretty irrelevant actually who I sleep with? Why would someone need a label? Bizarre?
Why on earth would you gauge your self worth by the acceptance of other people? Anyone that feels they need to 'make a statement' to others about their sexuality before they can live their life must have some big mental health problem? It's no one else's business, why label yourself as 'gay' according to their definition. It's not for your benefit, it's for theirs. Why are so many gay men so weak that they need to come out? You need to be confident in yourself and accept yourself, just do what you want to do, and if anyone else is remotely interested or asks questions, that's their problem? Just fancying men or sleeping with them doesn't make you gay, just like having sex with women doesn't make you straight.
The norm in society is that you're straight unless you tell people you're not. It's his choice and that in no way makes him weak. That makes him strong, because he is a figure of representation for so many people which is what a lot of young people need.
Why is it that homosexuals advertise to the world what their sexuality is? Is it going to make things better in your bedroom? Is it to get accepted more? Is it to get more work? Who cares what you do at home, is it better to advertise? If you want to practice that at home just do your thing in private, I don't wish to know what you are, when I look at you I see a man.
+skatersaxman Listen up, you fucking moron. People in this society are obsessed with who is gay. It's not like there aren't any punitive repercussions once the knowledge that you're gay is found out. This often happens inadvertently, and people's romantic interests become apparent one way or another. Then when this happens, many people in this world seem to think it is fit to cause you all sorts of anguish. One significant way, among many others in which this happens, is that people collude to make this official through passing laws that discriminate against you in employment and housing. Affecting a person's basic needs. Another is verbal harassment that is direct or indirect(saying something's "gay" that means it's rubbish in e.g,) People aren't exactly ignoring that fact people are gay in our world. So, what really is it you're trying to say, dipshit? Homosexuals don't have to "advertise" anything. Many people deliberately put their noses into it, and given the harmful consequences of this, gay people need to confront this to stop it. It's the only good choice for them to make when dealing with the world. Get It?
It's not about advertising it. It's about representation. I am gay and I feel so alone in it. Seeing other people talk about it openly makes me feel less alone in who I am. And that's why gay people come out publicly and talk about it: to represent it in order to make others feel less alone.
skatersaxman lmao at home? you're not just gay at home, you're gay everywhere. to advertise? for what so people like you can hate. Make things better in the bedroom? If that isnt single handedly the dumbest thing i have ever read. What kind of ignorant idiot comments that. You i guess.

It's so much easier for young gay men today than it was 20 or 30 yrs ago. You guys don't realize how lucky you are. Be yourself, be happy.
+Art Stricklen You're right. I never really thought of that. It couldve been worse. Thank you.
+Elijah Torres That can be true. I meant that society in general is much more open to it. Thirty years ago, the AIDS epidemic was making it very hard for us to be out of the closet. We could get fired from our jobs, lose our apartments, and get beat up in the streets. Much progress has been made.
+Art Stricklen I'm 55. I was there. Now is a much better time to be young and gay.
A sincere thanks for paving the way Art!

Your awesome Gus. Thanks for your courage and honesty.
He is so eloquent and natural. I imagine he did rehearse for the video, but it seems he didn't...in a good way. Great job!

thats a good story. tnx.
If this guy was ugly (but still a talented skier) no one would give a damn. That's how shallow society is.
well, you are right unfortunately
Think of it as a 'face' that represents you and your community so that others will have a more positive outlook as opposed to the rampant negativity of homosexuality that have been generated over the years.
Your point?

Oh, So What?!?!?!?!
I am Gay myself, and it doesn't mean, I do not like men.
Oh, now I'm Bisexual???
Deal With It!
ta'ta'
Why can't you resort to using descent English language for replying to a question, without using obscene language?
Good for you, Gus, but in a way, who cares??
