Yeah this video was truly amazing. Also a Clemson fan but you perfectly encapsulated how the rivalry heated up after we finally snapped such a long drought in 74. Good luck tomorrow and looking forward to many matchups to come
Great recap of the rivalry. One of the best I have seen. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it with us. A lot of people do not realize how great this rivalry was, especially from 1977-'87 when the two teams were 5-5-1 in those 11 meetings against each other and the average margin of victory was 4.7 points. I hate that these two rivals, who are only 70 miles apart, do not play every year anymore.
I appreciate the love man. I wish these 2 played each other every year, that decade you mention is what got me to make this video in the first place. I couldn't believe just how closely contested each and every game was, not to mention the national championship implications that came along with it.
I grew up watching Georgia and Clemson battle in the 80s. Was one of the top rivalries in all college football at that time. Looking forward to next weekend. Should be a good one. GATA Dawgs
When doing research for this video I was amazed at how great the rivalry was in the 80s. 7 of the 8 games were one score games, with the only one not included being the 1981 9 turnover game, and even that one was only a 10 point deficit. Can't wait for next weekend, I think it will be closer then most people expect. Go Dawgs!
19:58 I was in the band for Clemson for this game, and let me tell you, being on that field for pregame, you couldn't even hear yourself think with how loud and hyped up the crowd was!

A very timely post. I have a few thoughts about the Clemson-Georgia Series. The 1980 & 1981 games took this series to a new level. I was fortunate enough to see the 1986 & 1987 games in person. Both were two of the best college football games that I've ever seen in person. This series was the most important college football series in the country for the first half of the 1980's.. Florida State, Florida and Miami were waiting in the wings. It was shocking to see all of the missed tackles during these highlights. During the early 1980's four athletes towered over college sports. Ralph Sampson, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and Herchel Walker. Amazingly Sampson and Ewing stayed four years while Jordan and Walker stayed three years. Unheard of in today's NIL system.
As not just a Clemson fan, but a fan of college football, I really loved this video. I like how you even though you’re a Georgia fan you describe this rivalry for exactly what it is. Historically, Georgia dominates this rivalry,, however, the past 30 to 40 years have been very competitive, with Georgia still taking the lead. I love this series between these two bitter rivals,, and I can’t wait for another edition of it when it kicks off on August 31st. Go tigers!
Great video! I grew up in Georgia, so I’ve always loved this rivalry, even though it has only been played a handful of times in my life. And, I hate Georgia more than anybody including South Carolina and NC State.
@@gridironlore33-18 the 1980/81 games are amazing. My man you should keep doing Rivalry series!! I know Georgia is your school but if you were to do this for rivalries throughout the country that'd be awesome!!
Much appreciated man. I've got another rivalry video planned for a few weeks from now, but I'll definitely consider doing more rivalry videos in the future!
Born in 75 a UGA fan. I live 45 minutes from Clemson and 55 minutes from Athens. Went to all UGA home games (and some away) from 80 to 2005. My father still has season tix. My kids go but I don't. 80 UGA then 81 Clemson made this "not anymore annual" rivalry one of the best in sports. Maybe it's because I'm an 80's kid but this rivalry was intense. All through the 80's this was must see. I'm excited for this year's game. Go Dawgs! I must say I grew up hating Clemson but have grown to respect them and pull for them as my second team (blasphemy for a UGA fan) This year's game will be close!
I grew up being told to hate Clemson, being in an entire gamecock fan family in columbia. After setting foot on the campus, I was awestruck and was one of only 6 in my graduating class to enroll there in 2005. My wife's dad (he passed away before we got married) was a trainer on clemson's '81 team and had an ongoing bet with a UGA fan friend, where he'd have to put a bulldog statue in front his house if clemson lost, and vice versa with a tiger, until the two met again.
I did live in Athens for a year in 2013 before moving back home (to me) to the upstate, 25 minutes from clemson, and the rivalry definitely lost fire, so much that I would just wear my clemson stuff out and all the fans and students just welcomed me, saying "hey we both hate usc!" The worst comment I got was "clemson sucks!" while watching the 2014 matchup at Cutter's pub in Athens. I still really love the town, but being 27 in a college town on the east side, walking distance to campus, was a bit tough. Every so often we still venture there to tube down the river. Only went to one game (vs App St) there in 2013 and it's a great gameday atmosphere. If this year's edition wasn't in Atlanta and at noon, I'd have gone, but we're saving our annual away game for Virginia Tech.
Lastly, any dislike I have for UGA is directly a result of kirby smart being an Alabama product. I know Richt didn't take the team to the next level, but I respected him as a coach for continually stringing together 9+ win seasons. If I had to pick an SEC team to root for, it'd be UGA. Unfortunately being 15 minutes from the border of GA means there are a few obnoxious fans where I used to work, but I just point out I've seen the dawgs in person more times than they have and that usually quiets them.
He did not show it, but there was a play when it looked on t.v. that Herschel crossed the goal line and was pushed back over and the refs ruled no touchdown.
It may not have had a classic ending but the story around the 1991 game was pretty neat. I can understand why its forgotten. Still can't believe Dooley went for 2 in 1977 after the penalty (try was from the 8 yard line instead of the 3) - and then running the same play as the TD. Crazy.
I have to wonder if Dooley would have kicked the extra point if overtime existed back then. I think he understood that anything but a win would mean Georgia would fall out of the rankings. That game is a hidden gem.

What about the 1991 game? I remember everyone (Georgia and Clemson) doing the tomahawk chop when they announced that the Braves have cliched the NL west.
I forgot to include Clemson outside of the SEC as one of the programs UGA pushed past in national dominance in CFB in this past era. This rivalry alone is historic but even the crossover between Clemson being the national champion every other year with Dabo to Kirby Smart and UGA’s ascension as national championship fixtures is just as relevant. It’s Clemson’s team record for turnovers forced, but it is not Georgia’s team record for turnovers. This is because Georgia holds the NCAA record for single game turnovers with 13 in a 48-6 loss against Georgia Tech in 1951

I tried to keep it to the one score games. While that one was close through 3 quarters it turned into a bit of a blowout for the dawgs, and it’s important to stay as unbiased as possible in videos like these
Most Georgia fans that live in SC, are just gamecock fans that got tired of getting beat every year, so the switched to the Georgia bandwagon.
Auburn fan here. I see UGA has been kicking our asses so thoroughly that they are having to resort to making up rivalries.
with all due respect, I've never once heard UGA and Clemson were heated rivals lol
Because recently they never played often like they used too, but Clemson is sorta georgias Rival out of conference lol which makes sense.
@@thegreatacky7983 yeah, guess it would. wonder if Clemson will join the SEC in the next decade? then they'd get to play constantly that'd be nice
As a Georgia fan, I would say that Clemson would be on a low tier on our rivals list.
@@XDrang93 well for being out of conference yeah, SEC is just one big rivalry conference
You are either very young or you weren't paying attention.
1993 game was a turning point also
Not much of a war when one team wins 80% of the time
“Georgia always seems to have some attractive cheerleaders”
Woah there buddy that’d get yuh cancelled today
That 2013 game was peak
Go Dawgs
SUCH A GREAT RIVALRY THERE'S NO HISTORY OR BACKSTORY
You forgot that revenge game where gurly and chubb was featured
