I am not American but have visited there a few times. Generally everyone gives tips, if you don’t it would be quite rude and people will get angry. They are paid very little amount money as salary so they really depend on tips to make a living. Even if the service is bad, I would say generally people give around 5% tips. 20% tips seems to be the average amount given for normal services.
It really is quite interesting, I’ve never seen any other country with such a big tipping culture.
