That's actually hilarious that nintendo missed the most obvious opportunity to have special themed challenges in the open world around specific enemies to unlock them as playable characters

It confuses me cause they had been developing this since 2017. No one saw an opportunity?

Second of all: how did you make the “Read more” text be reversed
I learn from this that I still enjoy and prefer Sonic All-Star racing
I like how it took the community like a week to already discover a new wave of insane shortcuts. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t get a new game for ten years
That happens every Mario kart then there’s a drought and years later everyone finds even better shortcuts
I just thought it felt refreshing because it’s happening with a new game but you’re absolutely right
Well that mostly happened because MKW is literally the only reason right now to get a Switch2
Of course they discovered a new wave of insane shortcuts... The game hasn't been out that long.
It helps that the game's mechanics actively encourage you to find and use those short cuts. Wall riding is literally a back of the box feature of this game, and that trick off of anything system wasn't implemented by accident. Nintendo designed this game with crazy shortcuts in mind, no two ways about it.

I just don’t understand why adding intermissions has to mean the tracks have to be 1 lap. I feel like it would’ve been great having the intermissions but still doing 3 laps of each track, sure it takes a bit longer but I feel like that was the best solution. Only playing 1 lap is just so strange
Agreed. If the worry was making a gaming session too long, they could just make the intermission a bit shorter, so there could be more time dedicated to playing all 3 laps of each course
Easy add more food items more speed options just for intermissions
Thats what I thought was going to happen, or like the placement of the intermission race would determine your place on the starting line of the next race
My theory is that they started with making Kamek turning you into enemies (maybe it had bad effects on your driving or something), then said “what the hell, put them in the roster”.
That makes way more sense. I'd even say they had that idea first, then were like "ayo, if we already have a Kamek model, why not add him on tour?", then someone was like "why not add the enemies on tour as well?", and a third guy said "why not add them to 8DX? We have DLC coming out for that game anyway!" and everyone agreed
I really love that since 90% of people are getting MKW with the bundle that means there’s going to be a lot less physical copies that could be sold second hand, which means that even more people are going to have to pay the full 80 dollars for that game
Exactly as intended by Nintendo. It's business
If I'm getting a switch 2, it will be second hand and there is no way in hell I would even bother looking for MKW, just sticking with 8 deluxe as it seems to be the better game.
Lmao that’s so funny

@p.8967Diddy has obvious PR issues at the moment but otherwise yeah
It looks like a really fun game, but 80 dollars is insane. It's clear they just wanted people to buy the bundle for 50 dollars which is a much more reasonable price.
But that still makes the total $500, which is absurd.
@@novamarpo3 Same price as a PS5. Gaming is a luxury, like most hobbies.

@@LaserBungalowps5 is 450 physical and 400 digital as far as I know. Been that way for a few months. Still cheaper
No the answer is no, it is 100% not worth the $80 price tag
Living in a country in south america where videogames and such are luxury products, Mario Kart World costs 95 dollars here! 75 if you buy the bundle... So this video is very much appreciated
yep. between 650 and 700 for the switch 2 is just insane. a month's salary for just the console. and like you said, 95 for a single game. Steam is such a big competitor here for a reason, no bullshit and a lot of sales throughout the year, a very consumer friendly return policy, and a platform were you can be sure wherever pc you move to you'll have your games with you, unlike nintendo.
The thing is, that's just how all of gaming is with countries with lower GDP/lower value currency. It's not a problem of the industry, it's a problem of the economy & wealth inequality where, if priced proportionally, they would be selling all of their South American products at a total loss, and they would be required to raise the costs further elsewhere to balance that out.
Another issue would then arise where many people take advantage of the price difference in relation to their own currency, and will start scalping product from your market and selling it in theirs for close to full price. This has been a thing with Virtual currency, online subscriptions and Digital Games for decades at this point, Xbox has been awash with people buying Xbox Live membership codes for cheap from markets where the value of those subscriptions is lower in order to allow those markets to participate. The only way to combat that is to have region locking, but then that drives up costs as you then need to make specific runs of consoles and games targeted to that market, which is exactly what they have done to the Japanese-Only line of Switch 2s that are lower priced to allow for Japanese people to be able to afford the console while their economy is under extreme strain.
It's the last option you want to take if you're already selling your hardware at a loss, and require a large volume of sales in the accessories and software to make up for that cost. This isn't something the platforms can simply wave away and cater to without wide systemic change and more aid and assistance to poorer parts of the world in order to improve conditions and raise more people out of poverty. It's immensely frustrating that any and all help in enabling the poorer people in the world to access luxuries that are much more affordable in wealthy nations gets immediately swamped with grifters and greedy exploiters looking to enrich themselves easily and quickly while fucking over the target market.

Not enough people are talking about it, but knockout tour while a "battle royale" as many call it is better referred to an elimination mode. Tons of older racing games had it. It's not something new at all, but a racing game feature I'm glad to see return.
the difference is it takes place through many different locations in one coherent path without loading screens
@@amarhastings6849 That's true. I was mainly referring to the concept. I know it's not the same as knockout tour but I played some PS2 games that eliminated people every lap or section of the course. Both no loading screens. Granted they were nowhere near as big as the tracks in this game.
@@amarhastings6849 Split Second is a 2010 arcade racing game with explosions, and it has an elimination mode. After 60 seconds from the start, last place gets eliminated every 20 second until there is only one racer remaining. You race on a single unique racetrack, just like knockout tour.

I’m really upset they didn’t include Kamek/Magikoopa. They really seem to hate him for some reason because he’s barely ever included in these types of games. And yes I know he’s an item but that’s not an excuse because Lakitu is still the flag waver/ref and yet he’s also playable.
It's weird because I'd expect the movie to drive his popularity up. I also think his design is quite unique, there's no reason to just make him an item even tho he just became a racer in 8.
@p.8967 World was developed concurrently with Wonder, so Kamek was likely already finished as an item before he was even added to 8 Deluxe. That's why he's not playable and why the Wonder Flower wasn't used instead
But Lakitu is duplicable, Kamek is usually one of a kind, unless they wanted the Kamek item to just be a normal Magikoopa item.

Nice to see Schaff making a full on game review for once. For the money I spent, $50 USD with the bundle, this is a solid enough follow up to a game we’ve been trapped with for 11 years, although it doesn’t really feel like an improvement, more a companion.
Also yes to your point at 8:59, Nintendo is just obligated to bring back this mode in every game, and it was only peak in 8DX since they had nothing else to add besides new characters, being able to hold an extra item, and two new items. It was not out of good faith, but rather just doing it for the sake of the game being distinct enough from its original incarnation in 8. They don’t care about the mode and it’s never been more apparent.
Right, like I still felt the desire to play MK8 later, just because I like those tracks a bit more honestly.
Yeah, for $50 bucks the game is a steal considering how many hours I'm going to sink into it gradually over time. I don't like saying this, but so would $80 if you're going from a pure "hours played" metric...which isn't fair though. Especially because it will require an online subscription anyway.

The absurdly chance based unlockable characters are to make sure it takes long enough to unlock everything for the completionists. Now it's almost guaranteed to be "enough hours to be worth the price."
I NEED THE DELTARUNE VIDEO NOW
The question if "Mario Kart World" specifically is worth 80 dollars is kind of pointless. It's not about if *this one game* is worth 80, is if *any game* is worth 80. There will be another game coming out soon that will also be priced at 80 and we'll have to have this whole conversation again. The question kind of implies that maybe this particular game is not worth the price, but another one might.
and in that regard i say, no, it is not. even less so considering that the boxes with download keys will also fall under the 80 dolar tag, so you won't even be able to trade your game in or sell it second hand, so you can't even mitigate the cost.
The issue with expecting game prices to stay the same is that game development is becoming VASTLY more expensive. You need to pay your staff more, the lease on your offices increases, utilities and hardware goes up, all of it outpacing inflation. If you scale back the budget and make smaller games, people complain that there's not enough to do. If you pull an EA and try to reclaim some of the losses via Post-Purchase revenue streams (DLC created pre-launch & Microstransactions), you get called greedy & suffer backlash (which is usually justified). If you pull an Activision and instead cut back on staff & use AI Gen tools to make assets & save time, then you're not only greedy, but also actively harming the industry.
There's no way to win against a consumerbase that's so violently opposed to any slip in quality, being behind the times, or adjusting prices to reflect the realities of modern economics & trying to avoid laying off staff to cut costs, or to avoid extreme crunch and unsavory practices I.E Microtransaction storefronts and Always Online gameplay that monetises your data for the platform to sell.
Expecting AAA games to remain the same price as 20 years ago when 480p and 4K60 are vastly different in the length of time it takes to create assets and the difference in required staff across the board is a massive revenue sucker.
You can't hope to keep producing games if your profits are being swallowed by running costs. The Switch 2 is a massive swing for Nintendo in regard to upfront investment. They are selling the consoles at a _steep_ loss in comparison to the original Switch. The last 2 times they tried to price the hardware more closely to the production costs, they suffered severe backlash and were forced to heavily discount the consoles shortly after launch in order to stay afloat, the Wii U didn't survive it, while the 3DS managed to bounce back by launching a cheaper option in the 2DS.
The difference in cost between Digital and Physical is purely to cover the fact that the new Game Carts are vastly more expensive to produce than the Switch 1 carts, as they are a very new high-speed flash memory module that isn't standardised yet. Remember how much the different capacities of iPhones and iPods used to cost when internal flash storage was new? Same for the cost of the PS3 and other Blu Ray players back in the mid 2000s. New tech innovations always have a high upfront cost to pay off some of the R&D performed in developing it, and prices will come down as the old tech is phased out and the new tech becomes the standard.
The only way to ensure that things don't get worse and that the industry doesn't suffer another Atari-level crash is to educate people on the true cost of the hobby, to acknowledge the risk that businesses take in being in the space, and to keep an open and good faith conversation to ensure accurate and justified criticism of the issues with the medium, rather than outright rejecting change and advocating for boycotting, piracy & financial ruin because you're uninformed on the reasons for the change and refuse to engage in the discussion at all. That is what leads to platforms wanting Always-Online, all-digital, DRM heavy & anti-tamper filled products that delve further and further into anti-consumer practices in order to protect their operation in the space.
You need to target the root of the problem, the increased production cost & stupidity of leaders willing to push for a trade war in the hopes of decimating foreign economies so badly that they will accept any bad deal offered & worsen their own lives just to stay afloat in the global economic system. The blatant greed of politicians who want nothing more than to bleed every nation of their wealth to install themselves as The Global Rulers who make all of the decisions.
You can't demand change by refusing to engage with the system.
@Whiteythereaper This is a really good point and I haven't seen anything similar in the rest of the comment section.
To be fair, though, AAA games are probably one of the less important things we're losing
@@WhiteythereaperI agree. The average person who buys these products don’t go on social media, look at a bunch of comments and say, ‘I won’t get this.’ The people in the comment sections of social media who are complaining about the corporate antics are only a fraction of the industry. Companies are not going to listen to that minority unless it hurts their product moderately or severely.
If you guys want people to listen, then unionize, or go to news stations, or spread the word in public. Going on a social media platform to complain, particularly in someone’s comment section, is not going to make a lot of people listen. Especially when these comments are in a massive sea of other comments across social media.

I don't know why, but Schaff's rant about unlockable characters reminded me of a completely unrelated game that actually did exactly what he suggested Nintendo should have done with this game. So, Lego DC Super Villains.
There are three ways to unlock characters over the course of playing this game. The first and most obvious is playing through the story and unlocking characters as they appear in said story. The second is the single unlockable character in every story level that you unlock by finding their portrait, spraying graffiti on it, and taking a selfie with it. The third and most compelling way is through the open world. Not only are there some characters who have little tasks for you to assist them with that let you unlock them, like Golden Glider, Krypto, Kite-Man, Polka-dot Man, Calendar Man, Vixen, Starfire, Psycho-Pirate, Doctor Light, the Trickster, Bronze Tiger, and Gentleman Ghost, but some are hidden in briefcases around the open world that you have to find and break in order to get them. And that's not even getting into the five bosses of the open world, those being Killer Croc, Red Hood, Frankenstein's Monster, Katana, and Doomsday. Fight and beat them, and they become unlockable. Unlocking characters in LDCSV is the most satisfying out of all the Lego DC games because of how diverse the options of unlocking them are
Kite Man, Hell Yeah!
Lego DC super villains is so damn good
@@Python-xs2ivbetter than it had any right to be, honestly
Lego Star Wars, the Skywalker Saga also did this correctly.
@@squeaks5677true, but what I remember most from that game is exploration. Getting to actually explore iconic areas from across the Skywalker Saga was really cool
0:02 HE GOT A NEW SPONSORSHIP YESS!!!!!
Oof. I can’t believe that’s how you unlock 11 of the characters. Your idea is perfect. Can you imagine how fun it would be to drive around looking for secret characters to unlock (with hints on where to find them), then you get to race them on original themed tracks and need to use different skills and tricks to win? Heck, even clear conditions could be pretty fun too. It breaks my heart thinking of what could have been.
The bigger problem is that even if you get the bundle to get it cheaper, it’s ignoring all future games they decided to make 80$. Next Mario and Zelda are bare minimum 70$, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried charging 80. But now, they have to directly compete with the previous titles that are not only still amazing, but are cheaper. Nintendo has basically forced even greater expectations on themselves to deliver the absolute best to justify these prices, and any slip up at all is going to hurt them even worse than if they were just priced like normal. Like why on earth does Nintendo, the biggest and most famous gaming company in the world, need to charge more money? They’ve already invested into a movie and possibly more, as well as investing into two freaking amusement parks. Yet they are somehow strapped for cash?! It’s complete greed, they know these will sell millions earn back profit ten times over, the price hike is completely unnecessary.
They need that money for patent trolling.
Considering most businesses are “spend money, then make money back”, it actually makes sense that they invest a ton into the movies and theme parks and can make a chunk of it back with the games
i think the thing i hate the most is that nintendo probably wont address literally any of the issues with the games
This. It's Nintendo, they don't really listen to the players. And even if they do, not short-term. Or like in a paid DLC. This could be the ultimate Mario Kart still, but I doubt Nintendo will improve Free Roam specifically & for everything else they'll probably just ask money in a DLC in like months.
Nintendo makes good games, but they are not consumer-friendly in practices. That's always been their shackle.
im sure theyll add stuff like they did with OG 8, but they wont address anything because they show no signs of weakness
Yeah some of the problems sound like they are fixable but knowing Nintendo it would probably not happen, that would require them to listen to their community

The review can be resumed in a single sentence: "the game is great, but the price is too high".
The decision to lock the NPC characters behind a convoluted method instead of something fun and straightforward reminds me of a quote from our favorite blue puppet, Arlo:
"Why have something _fun_ when you could have something NEW???"
From his Paper Mario the Origami King review. I remember that.
"Only rarely do you get normal three lap courses instead of intermissions plus one lap in online" ~Schaff
I think that's mostly because people don't know yet they can choose between the two
Okay I do need to ask this because I feel like I’m going insane, but the plus button does let you choose any course and lets it be 3 laps, right? I don’t have the game myself but from streamers I’ve seen them press plus to select a far off map and it does 3 laps of that. Like I don’t understand where the “if you want 3 laps you have to do random select” comes from
@@mushplush9665 Yeah you got it, but as I said not everyone knows that, so most people just select a course normally (which means it gets the intermission)
@@mushplush9665yes, but only in custom lobbies. In general online play, thats why everyone goes random for track picks, It forces 3 laps.
@@spinosaurusiii7027okay cool because I said this days ago on the Mario kart Reddit page and the only reply I got from it just said “wrong” and what I said was getting down voted, so I just didn’t know if I was somehow incorrect
This doesn’t work in online worldwide VS lobbies, only private lobbies.
There’s zero way to matchmake and always play 3 laps, which is stupid.
Anyone else hoping Schaff will consider a ranking of CTR: Nitro-Fueled or Diddy Kong Racing in the future. Their tracks & rosters would make for fun videos of he ever made them.
I would love to see him ranking CTRNF's tracks
Imagine if he does a ranking of the Sonic Racing games
He _needs_ to play Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, it's definitely up his alley
Not to be mean to Mario Kart and its fans, but CTR is legit the real man’s Mario Kart, and Nitro-Fueled low-key ruined MK8 for me. I definitely hope Schaff looks at that game because it seems to very much be something he would love…if you ignored the monetization controversy that came after launch. Fuck Activision

Not sure if you know this, but picking the Random option in online races results in a 3-lap race :) It's still annoying, but in a good lobby, near everyone will pick Random.
Apparently you can pick if you press + or something? French streamer I watch got to play tracks not in the initial selection without picking random, tho I can't check how exactly they do it. Only that guy in the chat mentioned the + button
@@ZedDevStuff I think that only works if you're in a private lobby. If you're playing with strangers, you can't do that.
16:00 Me, my brother, and one of his friends unironically spent 3+ hours just unlocking fishbone, I got it a half hour in, but good lord that lake rng in free roam did not spare the other two 💀. It was hard enough just getting the Kamek item in free roam.
I wish they added more into the open world like a story mode.
Wait til he finds out what they did to worldwide races
I still don't get how Mario Kart just doesn't ever copy Diddy Kong Racing's open world story formula. That was peak single player racing, and would translated well to World.
To them, Mario has to be unique, different, embody a feeling, and mechanics will drop in and out so long the feeling of the game and mechanics are unified.
In Mario platformers, this is justified; for all there are enough “mainline platformers”, they aren’t as frequent as they used to be, and for Nintendo especially Mario is the god they pray to to sustain Nintendo. Infrequent platformers that shake things up drastically is good for that series, and has been proven to historically work - it helps that platformers aren’t really a genre much less than they are a set of rules to make various obstacle courses.
It doesn’t work with the Mario Kart series because, well, there is only so far you can go with a Mario Kart game before it is not a Mario Kart game, and unlike platformers, there are only a few ways to make a wacky racing game feel fun to play. And even if they did figure it out (and they have, as far as movement has gone), a double gacha system is not it.
Mario Kart World is good, but let’s be honest the only reason it’s $80 for this game is because Nintendo knows that people will buy it no matter how much the game costs
It probably helps drive sales towards the bundle. I'd assume 90% of people if not more bought the bundle and not seperately
It’s not even good lol

The missions and the open world has so SOOOO much potential, like think about it
Like if u explore the maps, u can find missions to do and the missions can be
Escort a heavy package to the finish line as fast as u can without damaging it and you’ll be graded for how fast u do and how safe the package is. A stealth mission where u must reach the finish line without being spotted, or a escort mission where u must take a character to their destination before the time runs out, I have more ideas but those are the ones that could’ve made the open worlds more fun and interesting than finding and collecting P-Coins, and that could’ve been the perfect way to earn characters, and with the missions, the higher your grades are, the more characters and costumes u can earn
And another thing is that they could’ve done secret missions where if u find them, they could’ve been themed to other Nintendo Games like Pikmin, Pokemon or Zelda, like rounding up the Pikmin to safety and avoid Bulbords along the way, defeat the monsters as u gain more and more power by collecting the fragments of the Triforce, or racing Koraidon to the finish line before he does, and you can earn special karts and costumes for completing them, even tho the roster is jam packed and there won’t be anymore room for more characters, u will still feel accomplished with finding these secret missions and earning special prizes by finding and completing
But in the end it was a missed opportunity, Mario Kart World is very expensive and yet, Nintendo wasn’t innovated in this next Mario Kart installment after years, instead of pushing their creativity and making this game big than the Mario Kart games before, they just played it safe
Racing games don't always benefit from inventive side missions to unlock things. Just try sega all stars racing transformed and go as far as you can.
No because that would be more than Nintendo needs to do and they don't like to try anymore
The roster doesn't suck, but the character select screen sure does!
Finally, someone else who realizes that Conkdor is the best part of the game! They’re the best character ever!
Shout-outs to Sidestepper for finally being playable... 42 years after being introduced.
