[TSW:2] I am bad at British trains. Can I meet the schedule in the snow in Train Sim World 2?

  • I am not super familiar with vacuum brakes, nor do I have a good feel for them, and a stopping service is lots of precise use of brakes. Can we keep to the timetable? Let's make it snowy for extra difficulty...

    The Jubilee, BR 45632 rolled forward with the sounds of steam and steel on the cold, snowy, January morning. Hyce could remember the smell of the coal, the chippy winter winds, and the warmth of the roaring, crackling fire. The clouds were a dark blanket over the city. Yet, he could not think of a more beautiful way to start my morning.

  • @Streaky100001
    @Streaky100001 2 года назад +5

    Here's a question then Hyce, you say that in the real thing the engineer is feeling the steam chest pressure feedback through the throttle, could you maybe give more detail of what you're feeling? I mean, are we talking about vibration in the throttle bar, or some sort of resistance? Or some sort of tendency for the regulator to try and move itself in a direction that you're working against? Just curious, as from the outside it just looks like a large lump of metal that I can't see giving much feedback, but clearly it does somehow.

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 года назад +4

      When you're about to slip, the engines try to throw the throttle bar wide open. My presumption (not confirmed nor would I know how one could confirm it) is that the steam is "backing up" in the branch pipes and dry pipe prior to slipping, and then pushes on the throttle valve. It's a phenomena I've run into on all three engines I've run.

    • @Streaky100001
      @Streaky100001 2 года назад +1

      @@Hyce777 Ah, interesting. That theory certainly sounds plausible to someone with limited knowledge of steam loco mechanics anyways. I guess it could be confirmed, if you really wanted to. There's almost certainly a way of getting a pressure transducer, or older pressure gauge, into those pipes, although I'd imagine it's not the easiest thing to do, and probably not worth it to settle idle curiosity lol. But, yes, it would make sense, from the videos I've seen of steam engines slipping, it usually looks like they sit trying to pull away against resistance, some times even starting to very slowly roll, but then, it's as though a switch is flipped, and all of a sudden they go from 0 to everything on the slip very quick, almost like they were sat building pressure somewhere in the system as you suggest, until it reaches the point where there's enough pressure to overcome the friction between the wheels and the track, and then all of that built up pressure acts instantaneously as soon as the friction lets go. Of course, as I say, my knowledge here is very limited, so I may be spouting rubbish lol, I just know steam locos look cool as heck, that's the limit of my knowledge that I'm confident is correct lol, the rest is just bits and pieces I've picked up that may or may not be accurate.
      So, anyways, what's the normal response when you feel that throttle trying to push itself wide open? Is it just close it up a little? Or slam it all the way shut, then start opening it back up slowly? Or... how do you go from feeling it's about to slip, to... not slipping?
      Thanks for your insights, it's always great to hear how things work in the real world from people who've done it :)

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 года назад

      Yes, but you're also the country that decided running cars without brakes was fine and decided to limit speeds based on that, lol!

    • @Streaky100001
      @Streaky100001 2 года назад +1

      I mean..... who needs brakes? They don't make the train go faster. I'm all for solving one problem at a time, lets make it go fast then worry about making it stop while we're screaming through the station. As long as you keep blowing the whistle all the way anything bad that happens is everyone else's fault for not taking note of the warning signal. Anyways, worst case scenario, the fireman can stop the train Fred Flintstone style, it's fine.
      Also, just another fun fact for you about British railways of the era... we're also the country that decided disconnect the rear car/cars of a passanger train while the train was running at mainline, express train speed was a smart idea. (If you've not seen slip cars, the principle was that if you want an express service, but also want to drop some passengers off at a minor station on route, any passengers for that station sit in the rear car, that has it's own independent brakes, and a brakeman, at the appropriate moment the rear car detaches, and the brakeman brings it to a stop at the platform, then you get everyone off and get the stations shunter to get the car off the mainline sharpish before the next express train comes through... we we're really smart about safety things!)
