Excellent book! I am often not blown completely out of the water as to the identity of the murderer (I often guess and guess correctly) but this one really blew me away. I did not suspect for a second but it worked so well. Probably one of my top three Christies to be honest, I'm glad you liked it too!
Great video/review as usual, Mara. I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that Christie had seen a quite famous British actress in the vein of Carlotta Adams. The author was so impressed by the actress that she she drew the inspiration for this book from her performance. Unfortunately I can’t recall the name of the actress, but Christie was was very open the whole thing.
Yes, she did indeed! I don't recall the name of the actress, but yes, she was inspired by someone who accidentally ODed on sleeping drugs who was an impressionist
It always amazes me how when you talk about Agatha Christie's books, the entire book comes flooding back to me :D This one was one of my more recent favourites but you still picked up on details I'd forgotten!
spoilers!! how did you feel about poirot solving it sort of by chance? it’s self aware in that poirot considers it a failure, but i thought it was a bit of a cop out that that’s how he figured it out. thoughts?
I think this is one of Christie's most entertaining books. I do think, however, that if the novel had come clean about Edgeware's homosexuality it would have strengthened the narrative.
Yes his gay Ness is pretty strongly suggested. And the butler was used just to throw us off. Edgeware was painted as a man of weird tastes. I think it was very hacky , the way we were thrown off from the truth.
I'm gonna be honest, I wasn't a fan. But to be fair I'm a bit biased because I am personally not a fan of this type of murder plot and it's reveal. But also I wasn't fond of the references and description of the Jewish characters in the book. It felt a bit anti-semitic to me, now I understand that could be the period when it was written, but it felt like it aged like milk. Plus I found parts a bit homophobic when it came to the butler and Lord Edgware.

I really loved this one more on this reread than I had the first time around! I think it's got a lot of her classic touches, plus a great premise
This will be my next Agatha Christie read. I just got done reading THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES and I love it!
Oh great! I'm glad you enjoyed "Styles" - it's a wonderful one :)
@@bookslikewhoa Is there a gay stuff in this one ? I read that somewhere I think 🤔
I love your intro!!

Lez be friends
You attribute way too many of your own biases to AC. I don’t think there was anything pointing to Lord Edgeware being gay. That’s a reach.
Reading Edgeware as queer coded is actually a pretty common position in Christie literary studies
