In this episode we meet Dawson Moore from MichiganSloyd in Harbor Springs MI. We discuss how he got started spoon carving, challenges along the way and tips for others that want to do this type of work.
Dawson's design for the spoon mule is the best I have seen. He does have plans available on his website if you would like to build one for yourself.

Finally we get a good interview with this awesome gentleman! :) Thanks Will
Simon Petrikov thanks Simon! Dawson is a pretty awesome spoon carver. I’m happy to share his story.
I'm just starting my third Spoon Mule based on his design, this time a collapsible one I can take dissemble for the Oregon Country Fair. Thanks for your fine work, Dawson. I've made hundreds of spoons, ladles, forks, and spatulas with my Michigan Sloyd model spoon mule. Cheers.
Great stuff bro! Just bought the plans for your spoon mule!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@CreationsByWill I do. Very much!
Is there plans for the shavehorse device
Yes. There is a link to them in the Description
Hazel
Carrot made it into the video! Nice video folks.
😜 thanks! Glad you liked it. Check out the peddling wood series playlist for more stories like this!
This is an awesome interview. A real craftsman.
Thanks! Dawson does some pretty epic work. It was a great honor to get to meet him and experience what he does first hand.
Excellent interview!
“Carved spoons by hand”, whips out wood machine he actually sits in/on.
Nicholas Jonas hahah. Yeah.
The spoon mule is actually a pretty cool design that came as a result from his business having to take the shift from slowly carving each spoon to having to produce large amounts of spoons in order to sustain his market growth. The spoons are still carved by hand. The mule is simply a device that helps you hold the piece securely and safely. In the end the final shape and finish is still done off of the spoon mule.
I just started carving spoons. I can see the value of the spoon mule. I’m probably going to make one. I like that design.
Right on! let us know how it goes.
Same here, just what I´ve been looking for. Inspiring video, many thanks from Spain.
Im trying to figure out how to do the same but not confident i can get my cost of living down. So far it doesnt look like it will happen
Adam Wilson hey Adam. If it’s truly something you want to do you just have to go for it. There will be ups and downs with either path you take. Just follow the one you love the most. 🙏
Wish I could but with a family to provide for its just a dream for now. Hoping craft shows do better than etsy and facebook but we will see. Maybe next summer i can get into a farmers market.
Quite a bit of waste wood there. That was one hell of a chunk of wood for a spoon.
Yes i will try & help you out the best i can. Well i started watching the video believing it was a sp0on carving video,as i was watching carving videos about sp0on carving,i seen seconds of action @ the start of the video, then it went into a conversation about the carver. That is when i got bored & paused it then i wrote my comment & went onto watching another video. I never got to see if there was anymore action. For me, if there was action i would have rather have seen that @ the very start & then i would have probably sat & listened to you both.
Boring!
Thank you.
@@CreationsByWill Your very welcome.
GingerJewishGiraffe do you mind giving me some insight into what you did not like so I can try to produce better content? I’m pretty new at filming and editing these videos.
@@CreationsByWillI found it helpful and interesting. People keep telling me I should sell my spoons but not really have any idea how to go about it. This was some good information even for someone not wanting to make a career of it. Maybe just a little extra money for better gouges or other equipment . I usually just gift away anything I make. How do you put a dollar value or decide what a spoon is worth.
Manbunn McFanypak {just a cool guy being cool} thank you for the great feedback🙏 I’m happy you found value in the information in the video. Pricing your irk is always a challenge for every creator. It all depends on how much value you put on your own time and how much time it takes to produce each item. I’ll pass this on to Dawson to see if he can chime in on how he prices his spoons for you.
Do you have an Instagram? Would love to check out your work.
