What lovely blooms these orchids have. These are on my wish list and maybe down the line I will order or get one. Thank for the tips on caring them. You are an amazing mentor keep going as I love this journey.
Hi, I really learned a lot from your videos regarding how to grow rhynchostylis from self watering pots, and I think that having the right amount of moisture is the secret for their speedy growth. I'm from the Philippines and we have the humidity of about 80-90%. I'll try potting my rhynchostylis in self watering pots.
Amazing! 😀 I'm excited for you, it's the time of year so hopefully yours arrives with a spike! 🤞💗 They are the most stunning flowers, maybe my favourite flower on an orchid!
I have the red and a white that I grow bareroot... Yours hold their leaves much better and I am now convinced that your way is the best. I don’t know how I would ever find a pot for the white because the roots are 3 feet long. Beautiful display!
I feel like they enjoy more moisture than I can provide bare root personally, but you could probably just compensate by watering very frequently bare root 🙂 Time constraints mean that wouldnt work for me personally. Problem is, if you have a 3 foot long aerial root system which you then pot, there's always a risk that those roots won't be able to adapt to the new media. It doesn't always happen, but there's that risk the old roots won't make it 🤷♀️ Pros and cons, mine went straight into this setup and just took off, I've found newer roots or roots that have growing tips anywhere along them tend to adapt better than very old roots. Any setup could potentially work if you have the right climate and can keep up with watering 🙂
They are soo gorgeous, you won't be disappointed! 🙂 Now is a good time of year to get they as they will just be kicking into active growth, they really don't do as much in cold weather compared to summer! 🙂
I can’t wait for mine to bloom... I think I have about 10... (relax, most of them are seedlings) I think 1 is definitely but maybe 3 are blooming size... the first one I ever got was ironically red. So.... I would enjoy the fragrance I guess. 😓 didn’t bloom all year long though... thinking the lighting issue? So I put a little light above it. I heard it’s not enjoying strong light like other vandas so... 🤞I am still looking for blooming size retusa.
I just encountered a "Cartoon" in bloom yesterday and my friend determined that it smelled like "Spices and lysol". The lemon bleach description is spot on.
We have got a native species growing in the wild, which is more like your second one. The blooms are much more taller and things. And the leaves are long and slender having lemon fragrance.
Even if the flowers are more closed I think it's just the cutest, most delicate thing! Ok so yes but the flowers then only lasted a week 😂 thought I'd have more time to film. It was a catasetum albovirens, and it smelled like toothpaste and looked like the little fairy navi from the zelda games 😂 I did get some pictures so I'll put them on community, and know for next time that they don't last!
Hi Annabelle. I recently found my fourth self watering pot. I’m thinking about putting in a Vandaceous type into it. I can’t make up my mind whether to use a Rhynchostylis, Neofinetia or an Angraecum. I don’t have much luck with these types as it’s so hot in my summertime so I think the continual access to water would be beneficial. Do you have Angreacoids? It would have to be one of the smaller types if I were to use one.
Hi Lynn, the ones I've had in semi-hydro / self watering the longest are the Rhynchostylis gigantea, they just took right off. I've been keeping Angraecums in SH for about a year now and they really didn't skip a best or need any adjusting, my rutenbergianum x conchoglossum is probably the miniature that's doing the best, followed by my didieri x neofinetia cross. The big Angraecums do excellently and are probably the furthest along in this system, but I've had them the longest, and you said they're out of the picture. I also have an elephantium (funny that its it's a mini!) that's slowly adapting, that was the fussiest mini IMO. Angr. Leonis also do well but they need a bit more moisture because of the fine roots, so I put some synthic wicks near the top of their pot, you could always improvise by cutting up some microfiber to wick to the top of the pot. Neo crosses do great for me, I'm still working out the pure species though, they're doing well but I just feel they could be better. They may need a bit more moisture and some synthic adding in.... 🤔 Hope that helps! Ps. Sorry, there are probably some typos with the names, didn't check them all 🤷♀️😂
The Orchid Room That’s all good info. I think I may check and see if I have a smallish growing Angreacum then. The big kinds will overtake my pot and I’m hoping to just plant and leave it. I may have to investigate finding some pots I can convert to self watering.
Hi Annabel Greetings from Goa I have 3 of the Rhynchostylis in Red/Pink and white I have been growing them bare routed in baskets and they seem to be doing just fine just that the watering frequency is more often. How long will it be before they can flower? You know our weather is humid hot and wet and I hope we will see an early bloom...
They flower in Autumn/ Winter as temperatures begin to cool, so I don't know when that will be for you, if same hemisphere then probably will start spiking in November if they are suitably sized, but it's impossible to tell as it is heavily season dependent and could vary between countries 🙂 Whenever your early winter is really.
Hi, I have a care video on these which is linked in this video and in the description. I'll link here also: ruclips.net/video/Fet1thzIsJ4/видео.html They get fed the same as all my other orchids, rain mix, silicon and seaweed with every watering. They live on a UK windowsill, phalaenopsis level light. Growing in self watering with LECA 🙂
I'm excited to hear that for when my orange eventually blooms, I would love to have one that's actually a really nice fragrance, not just one I put up with for the flowers!
@@TheOrchidRoom think these less pleasant undertones in fragrance of many orchids are plants trying to attract a certain pollinators by recreating a pheromones of their mates. Pheromones are a chemical compounds of not particularly pleasant smell. usually. You might hear me saying it already, my partner called my Coelogyne cristata a cat pee orchid. He couldn't stand it. I was more tolerant to its fragrance. Probably you know it already, same as we each see colours differently the same way we smell things differently. Apparently there is a certain percentage of population that is unable to smell freesias for some reason.
My new obsession is Rhyncostylis gigantea x phalaenopsis crosses. Just orders a rhynchostylis gigantea x phal japonica. I'm looking for a rhynchostylis gigantea x phal violacea or lueddemaniana 👀 I may have to make them myself 💀
The Rhynchopsis dragon charmy is a fussy little one, good luck! 🙂 My second one is doing alot better than the first did though! There is a Rhy. gigantea x Neo falcata called Vandachostylis pinky that's quite cute also! I've never seen a Rhynchostylis crossed with a polychilos phal, I asked before and someone said they don't hybridise well 😥
I've been obsessed with getting an aerides houlletiana x phal equestris hybrid but they arent available in europe. I've seen hybrids with the equestris before for other rhynchostylis but never for a polychilos 😢 I mentioned it in a video once and someone, I think Michael McCarthy, explained a bit more but I can't find the comment 😥 Let me know of you find out more! I'm super into the idea of polychilos x vandaceous type hybrids!
I found the comment! It was on my Neo video, Michael suggested that the Polychilos group has very limited compatibility with vandaceous types or other species in general 🤷♀️ The fact that these hybrids aren't very available leads me to think there must be something in that but I don't have much knowledge in the department, would be very interested to hear what Norman says! P.s. Tiny bit jealous that you can pop into Norman's 😀😉
A good place to start is searching for a reputable online nursery in your region that can supply them 🙂 Google is great for tracking hard to find species down!
Good description! Slightly fermented 😂 I really can't work the fragrance out, bright light definitely makes me think of cat pee 😂 It's a funny one, lots of people seem to detect it as a nice fragrance.

They are one of my favourite orchids just for the flower show! Very rewarding 🙂

Very pretty 🤩 so striking and abundant 👍🏼👍🏼 great job!
Stinky but beautiful 😂👃 Some of my favourite flowers though, I love clusters of flowers!! If only they smelled more lemony and less of cat pee 😂

You can increase humidity around roots by growing a Spanish moss entangled in those roots
I just ordered two of these online...one is the spots variety and the other is an Alba variety! Can't wait to get them!😍

Rynchostylis retusa ( state flower of Assam state in India)
They are so pretty!.🤩
So beautiful!
Thankyou! 😀💗
I agree, the spots is the more beautiful bloom. Did that mystery Catasetum ever open up?

Have a good day

Thanks, you too 🙂 the flowers are stunning, I hope you get some this year 🙂

Amazing! Please tell me how is your cultivation? Water, luminosity, fertilizers, etc... I have an orange color. Thanks! 🙏😘🇧🇷

The scent seems to vary from plant to plant. My Rhynchostylis 'orange ' has a spicy sweet scent and blooms middle of February.

@@TheOrchidRoom this orchid blooms like clockwork. It always bloom every year. I'm thinking of buying a red one this coming month.
It is beautiful. Where you bought it?
The 3 shown came from different european nurseries / sellers a few years ago
Hey, my rhynchostylis in leca is putting out a nice fat new root. Yeah! How do you fertilize? Ppm?
Well done 🙂 I give them the same as my phals, you can find my routine here ruclips.net/video/p87-HcOuRTE/видео.html
Thanks !
Just beautiful... Unfortunately it doesn't sound like I could have them with my allergies and sensitivity to strong perfumes
Might be one to avoid, or at least smell one at a show before you commit 😅
Wow
I have a Prostechea Siam Jade that has the same fragrance issue. Smells jasmine-like from a distance, but has an undertone of dirty socks up close 💀
Sounds lovely 😂What is it with these smelly orchids? 👃
