Thanks for sharing so generously with us. I'm a newbie and greatly appreciate it! Looking forward to seeing your beauties blooming again here in SC this year!
I will share this with some members of the club who are interested in starting hybridizing. Hopefully, some other members will see how easy it is to produce seeds. They can find out how hard it is to get keeper seedlings. But, it's really fun to use our imaginations and see what's blooming in the seedlings each day during bloom season. Thanks for all you do for DLs, Dano! David Bishop Shady Rest Garden, Cartersville, GA
This is the best video I have come across on You Tube that made any sense and also answered a lot of questions and gave me confidence to start cultivating a lily my Mom got that is floundering. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!
My daylillyswas at 55 oak tree Dr. Slidell and 126 Grand ChampionsSlidell La. it has been so long you may not remember me as a customer God Bless the best blooming daylillys I ever grew thank you
Thank you for putting this info on here, I'll be saving this one. I've wanted to do this for a very long time, your tips are invaluable, and not seen on other videos, every question I had was answered during the video. Can't wait to see what I get after trying to pollinate some a few weeks ago, probably dumb luck if anything comes of this yrs attempt. Thanks again. Oh and that's the best use of an ice cube tray I've seen yet.
Im in Canada, should I be lucky enough to get seeds from my daylilies, should I plant them in my garden in fall or wait until spring? Zone 3 and we get winters of down to -38 sometimes. Thanks so much for all your tips. I am going to try some of my neighbours asiatic or oriental lillies and see if they work with my tawny day lilies. I also have some lovely yellow and red daylily to mix with my orange and yelllw day lily. :)
Hi, Thank you for the video! I have a few questions for if you don't mind: 1. How do you know if it has been pollinated already by a bee or something like that? 2. Is it possible for the stigma to take on pollen from different flowers? You mentioned in the video that it is one pollen per seed pod so I just wondered how you prevent natural cross pollination or if that is a concern. Thank you for your time! Respectfully, Amanda
1. you dont!!! due to location of sex organs and time of day it is rare to get bee (wild) crosses no nectar in daylilies so not many bees, pollen is way away from stigma. when style can take pollen, early morn the pollen is not dry, when pollen dry late morn, the stigma "closes" 2. most crosses use "other" pollen, selfing is usually not done
great video... how many days do you stratify the seeds (minimum, maximum)?... what characteristics do you look for when choosing parents? Thank you for a excellent video...
enjoyed the video. will these steps also work for Tiger Liliy plants? I'm not looking to cross pollinate at this time but want to increase the number of plants I have. will I still have to pollinate the Stigma or will that happen naturally? do I have to remove the bloom and expose the Ovary? I have plenty of orange ones but just got a few yellow, red and peach ones. btw, do you know if I can divide the root bulbs to get more plants? the couple red ones have a bunch of roots bulbs on them. ty, John :-)
conversions are lab mutants - chemically treated. all tets today are from these mutants! tet on tet there is a document suggesting what you propose is possible. I do not believe any seed would result. have done the dip tet cross 1000s of time, mainly by mistake, no seed
Correct me if I’m wrong. After you cross pollinated you stripped the flower exposing the ovary. Is this your normal practice or was it done as an educational demonstration. Forgive me if my question is stupid but I am new at this.
When do seed pods form on day lily? I am in my first season of growing tawny orange day lilies. I have not seen any seed pods form yet. I am going to try this tomorrow :)
pods will form at base of flower 2 - 3 days after it bloomed you usually have to pollinate, selfing will usually work problems: parents could be sterile, DLs have two ploidlities - dip and tet they will not cross, too hot, too dry, too wet, deer ate them.... just saying!
Dan so good to see you I used to be one of your customers,it’s been awhile since hurricane Katerina. I now live in a Senior development, please send me one of your catalogues I love your reblooming daylillies add. 172A cross creek Dr. Slidell,70461 looking forward to getting and buying some daylillys so good to see you on RUclips.I am now77 small garden boy am I lucky 👍🙏🏻
LadybugDaylilies.... Not sure what I have here in MI. We are going into fall and I harvested a bunch of seeds. I will put them in the refrigerator for a while just to be sure. Thanks for the fast response
The background noise really needs to be cut down in this video. The content is great, but the noise is very distracting. I think if you put some more work into it, you could remake this video, monetize it, and get a lot more views.
FINALLY, I found the video that answered all my questions about this process! You deserve a stout medal just for this!
thxs1
Thank you for this nice demonstration: exactly what I was looking for.
Could you make another similar video to show us how you then plant the seeds?

Thank you from Australia.
Great info in the vvideo that I could not find elsewhere on RUclips. Appreciate your help.
Thanks for the flowers Dan, they look great up here in Ohio. Take care.
Excellent. Thank You! Most information in one video I have found.
the crickets and their sound-- so mesmerizing!!! so nostalgic and peaceful!!

Thank you for the nice detailed video. Very nicely done. Nice music too. Subscribed.
Love it. Now I have to go out and figure out where the seed pods are.
Wow... !!! My best friend, Great... Awesome... Full watched. Thanks Have a happy day!
Detailed af!! Super informative

Idk I'm no expert. Somehow several daylilies ended up cross pollinated without my intervention.
Lovely explanation, thank You!
great video... how many days do you stratify the seeds (minimum, maximum)?... what characteristics do you look for when choosing parents?
Thank you for a excellent video...
I dont need to stratify, all my plants are evergreen.
most important is the plants whats to grow and bloom over a LONG time
How many times (months, weeks ) do you keep the seeds in the fridge before putting back in soil? Or if you sell the seeds?
Shout out from NJ!!😁🥳

the process is the same for most flowering plants
This is really helpful! So are you saying it’s ineffective to make crosses after 10:30? Is it a temperature thing or time of day? Thank you so much!
It is a heat thing! up north on days below 80' the flowers usually can take pollen all day!
@@LadybugDaylilies Thank you so much for your reply! That will help me a lot!
My mom cut the flowers with the styles off a few hrs after I crossed this morning. Some still had the ovary. Do you think she ruined them?
When making the conversions, when you choose to try for a tetra out of a (diplod?), you would use the pollen of the DI on the stigma of the Tetra?
conversions are lab mutants - chemically treated. all tets today are from these mutants! tet on tet

have done the dip tet cross 1000s of time, mainly by mistake, no seed
what part of florida are you in? im by nasa and I'm wondering if the 95 degree days are going to really hurt the flowers?
I am a resident of West Bengal, India. I have purchased almost 200 rhizomes in last three years but I did not get good varieties. Thanks.
Love your videos!

I exposed the ovary for demonstration only!

LadybugDaylilies i tried your tap tap method today so we shall see and will try a few more tomorrow, thanks for the video
Hi. Just a quick question, why do I refrigerat the seeds if they are dry? Thank you.
I use the fridge to hold my seed to keep from germinating, maybe 2-4 weeks. In Florida nothing is dry in the summer!
when do you plant your seeds
Thank You!!
Thanks for all the good info! :-)
Thank you very much!
Foliage on my daylilies are weak, what should I do ??
Thanks for sharing
Will it pruduce geowable seeds
Thank you
interesting info. :)

so they will not seed unless you do this?
they can get crossed with insects, wind, or something bumping into the flowers but all those conditions are very rare

Funny, you don’t look like a daylilly.

actually I like the garden sounds..... real! not electrical noise
Love the vid, very helpful and am grateful. Thank you!
