I'm using Vienna Products, but never had the chance to compose something for live performance - let alone to publish something. This sounds like a good challenge and the Hook-hook in the end got me hooked 😃
@@ViennaSymphonicLibrary Thanks Paul! Question, we are not restricted to only 7 tracks for this? (i.e. For example, can we have more than one track of say BBO Free, and say Celestial Strings, etc) just as long as we use only the Free VSL instruments? Thanks!
Yes, any plug-in is a plug-in ;-) Don't worry, as the terms say, "We’re listening out for musicality, creativity and originality." It doesn't matter at all how loud your track is, or how polished and mastered it sounds.
Hi! This is exciting! A question: is it ok to use VEP7 as workflow setup with Cubase for the zipped DAW file? Wouldn’t want to mess that up in case you need to see all Synchron Players/instruments showing up directly in the DAW file for traceability. Thanks!
Okay, Paul, we should not use any plugins in our DAWs, but can we at least normalize whole mix or we can upload raw audio render and your team will correct levels for better listening?
Hi Arthur, no need to worry about loudness. this is not about levels at all, it's just about the composition. Jury members will listen at the level they prefer. -Martin
Do we have to do anything besides upload the files to submit our entry? I uploaded my mp3 and zipped project file, does that mean I am entered? I'm looking around for a submit entry button, or something along those lines, and am not seeing anything.
When the "Select file" button is gone and the file name with your unique code appears instead of the button, you're all set and you have successfully submitted your entry! -Martin
Hello! I have a question: Can the project be based on 48 kHz/16 bit instead of 48 kHz/24 bit because my daw doesn't have the 24-bit option when exporting in mp3
Right-click on the .cpr file and choose Compress which will create a .zip file that you can upload on the Composer Contest web page. Best of luck! -Martin
To avoid any discussion which effects are allowed and which aren't, and to what extent, please stick to what's mentioned in the requirements: "We’re listening out for musicality, creativity and originality. No additional effect plug-ins are allowed." I know what you mean, but we just want to create the same conditions for every participating composer. -Martin
Hi Paul! 2 questions regarding the rules: 1) Am I allowed to alienate/manipulate the sample content using the internal effects of the Synchron Player so a string patch might sound like a synth patch or something realy crazy for instance? 2) As I'm using Ableton Live as my DAW of choice, there are several MIDI effects and plugins (from the Max for Live environment) which allow me to map any parameter of a plugin (Synchron player) to a LFO for example to make automations "automated". So for example I take a Max for Live LFO and map CC1 to this LFO. This way my Dynamics fader is modulated by this LFO (like in a modular synth). Its like "automating automations", so you dont have to draw in those crazy automations. Is this allowed since this is no FX processor? What are the limits for using MIDI effects like arpeggiators or velocity scalers or bespoke CC automation plugins?
Yes to both, but please bear in mind that the jury is looking for creativity and originality in terms of composition, not so much in terms of sound manipulation. - Ben
Yeah! I am so excited about it!
What a fantastic way to celebrate 20 years of VSL :D
Quick Question .. I know we can't use external plugins but is it ok to use my Daws volume faders to balance out the tracks ? Thanks Paul & team VSL :)
@@liquiditey Absolutely, that's totally fine!
cool! thx for the initiative
I'm excited to be a part of this, especially the knowledge you can get from someone like Darryl

Awesome! I wonder if we have to use all the 7 instruments or maybe just 1 o two. Thank you!
Hi! Yes, that's fine! Totally up to your creative decision-making as long as it's only Hello Free instruments. Best, Andreas/VSL
@@ViennaSymphonicLibrary Thank you! :)
Great! Thank you very much for this opportunity! can I use Reaper daw for this?
You're welcome, Igor, and yes of course you can use Reaper!
Paul could you please tell me to 'Break a leg' -Thanks! Am superstitious! So I'll give it a shot!

Hi VSL team, are mastering "plug-ins" considered as plug-ins ? Without any one, the final track will very likely not be in the LUFS standard norms.
Yes, any plug-in is a plug-in ;-) Don't worry, as the terms say, "We’re listening out for musicality, creativity and originality." It doesn't matter at all how loud your track is, or how polished and mastered it sounds.
