The little lever she pulls down and pushes back is how the machine knows to come back to the start. Basically the machine goes in reverse pushing the fabric towards you then when it get to the top it comes back normally (feeding out the back of the machine) to finish the other side. Hope that helps! 😊
Thank you for this easy tutorial and simple explanation. I’ve always been afraid to do button holes because they never were done in the right place no matter what I did. I think I’ll try it now.
Better tip. Use a seam ripper. It’s really easy to control how much you are cutting. And you use the tip of it to make sure you stop in the right place
Pro tip if your sewing machine doesn’t have this: you can use a zigzag stitch with the length at 0 and do the same thing- sew a little rectangle and cut the middle out
I watched 3 videos before this and this is the only one that explained how to do the lever. It's a key step for someone who has never done it before! THANK YOU for providing an actual step by step!!!! Just sewed my first buttonhole by machine!!!
Seriously, all your shorts are the best I've ever seen on RUclips! Your short tutorial on this and the finishing zig zag stitching is what I've been needing and looking for for such a long time! Thank you, please keep these coming.
I have this exact same sewing machine and have never known how to sew a buttonhole. And ive been sewing for like 15 years. This is a Godsend. Thank you!
tbh i use old sewing machines, i have learned 2 years ago how to make button holes without this foot, sooo i do it manually instead of automatically with my newer sewing machine i bought
I've been sewing for a good while now and I've searched high and low over the years for a comprehensive tutorial like this that actually shows WHERE to situate your needle on the buttonhole marking! I didn't have an easy go-to bookmarked tutorial because I couldn't find one so I just gave up. *bookmarked* ❤❤❤TYSVM
Super helpful! I don't do button holes often, and haven't done them in YEARS... I have a newer machine now which is very different from my old machine, so I'm glad I found this video! 😊
Finding your channel has been a god send. I was never formally taught how to use my machine (I basically read the manual and figured most of it out myself), and your videos have filled in what I couldn't figure out.
I just got a sewing machine from a friend, on long loaning since she never got around to use it, and thank god i just came across this video I had no idea what the weird looking white part was for and almost thought i broke something off!
Dudeee, I ruined a whole piece of fabric trying to remember how to work this out only to watch this and realise I wasn't pulling the last lever down!! Thank you for this
When I was learning to sew, all these buttonhole doodads either had not yet been invented or were not available to home semstresses. I had to learn to do it with just zigzag and a miniscule stitch length. All these tricks and tools make buttonholing look like a cinch!!
There is a bar that you pull down that is in front if the sewing machine when you make the button hole. The bar will keep it from going any further than it needs to go and you don’t have to watch it
I think that part tends to vary on the machine. my old machine had something like that, but I have friends who's machines have nothing of the sort. my newer, much fancier Janome just stops when it detects it gets to the end and does a backstitch/endstitch automatically!
Everytime I drop my button in the button foot I end up having a too small buttonhole so I have to do a bunch of tests and resize it before going on my actual fabric. Do you have any tips or advice on why it doesn't work ? I also have a singer, not this exact model, but the foot is the exact same and I also have the lever to pull down and push. Thank you !
Can you please make a tutorial like this for all the little sewing machine foots? I swear I can't figure this stuff out--your videos make them all make so much sense.!
You can say Buttonhole as many times as you need to when you're teaching how to make a buttonhole. I don't think anyone took offense, or thought you were saying butthole. I think it was completely clear that buttonhole is what you meant as you were truly teaching creating buttonholes from scratch. Thank you
I haven't ever seen this sewing button hole ever , ty for sharing never new this still learning and would much learn more from Smithers BC Canada God Bless
You put the button in the foot so the machine knows how big to make the buttonhole. The foot has a piece sticking out that moves when the button is put on the foot, and that piece hits the lever and signals the machine to start the second half of the buttonhole!
I used to have that same machine but it completely fell apart after a year. No repair shop would touch it, saying it’s meant to fall apart with plastic parts. They said if I was serious about sewing to buy a vintage machine with metal parts. I got a 120 year old machine and it’s never broken down.
Ah so that’s what that thing that slides down is! I gotta ready my manual again. Good thing I don’t throw manuals away, even for my sewing machine from 2008!
DRINKING GAME!!! Every time she says "Buttonhole" we take a drink of our barely hot herbal tea!😅 Seriously, this is the best "Buttonhole" tutorial ever!!! Thank you!
Great stuff. Now I got 2 machines, one surger and one for embroidery. Got an automatic setting for button holes like that one. But my embroidery dewing maching is 45 years old. It was a professional machine at the time costing around 8000$ back then, in today's money.
I have this sewing machine. When I make buttonholes, I leave the thread ends long. Then, I use a hand sewing needle to pull the threads to the back side and tie them.
Thank you for the tips . Marking with tailor's chalk the buttonhole is genius. Placing the pin before opening is genius. Sorry for overuse of genius! 🤣🤣🤣
Guys 😅 read your Manuel it says there the even have pictures some will not have that laver, I am not saying don’t watch what to do in a video but you divice may not have this
So I’m extremely new to sewing f I’m sure I’m missing the obvious question I’m about to ask…what is the point of putting the button in the slot if the machine doesn’t stop on its own? Like I said I’m sure I’m missing the obvious but I’d appreciate any help I can get!
OH MY GOD this is the best buttonhole tutorial! That's what that little lever is for! Thank you so much!!
My thoughts exactly! You said them better tho
The little lever she pulls down and pushes back is how the machine knows to come back to the start. Basically the machine goes in reverse pushing the fabric towards you then when it get to the top it comes back normally (feeding out the back of the machine) to finish the other side. Hope that helps! 😊
My little lever is to thread my needles
Thank you for this easy tutorial and simple explanation. I’ve always been afraid to do button holes because they never were done in the right place no matter what I did. I think I’ll try it now.
@@babymomma9728That's a different lever (obviously). Some machines have both.
A tip for when you rip the fabric for a buttonhole: go from both sides and end in the middle. That way you minimize the risk of ripping the stitches
Great idea!
I was taught to put in pins at the end so that the pin would stop me ☺️
Better tip. Use a seam ripper. It’s really easy to control how much you are cutting. And you use the tip of it to make sure you stop in the right place
Pro tip if your sewing machine doesn’t have this: you can use a zigzag stitch with the length at 0 and do the same thing- sew a little rectangle and cut the middle out
Might do this lol my buttonhole foot is mad at me it says e7 and won't see
I watched 3 videos before this and this is the only one that explained how to do the lever. It's a key step for someone who has never done it before! THANK YOU for providing an actual step by step!!!! Just sewed my first buttonhole by machine!!!
Ahhh, my favorite kind of comment! Yay!
Its so easy to do with the Singer Heavy Duty.
Seriously, all your shorts are the best I've ever seen on RUclips! Your short tutorial on this and the finishing zig zag stitching is what I've been needing and looking for for such a long time! Thank you, please keep these coming.
I never realized how complicated sewing machines are. I'm impressed
Wow, the best buttonhole tutorial ever!!!!!!
I have this exact same sewing machine and have never known how to sew a buttonhole. And ive been sewing for like 15 years. This is a Godsend. Thank you!
Please tell me what machine this is
@@mikapika2809 it's the Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine.
Do you not have an owners manual? That should show you how to sew on a button and make a button hole.
@@mikapika2809 Singer Heavy duty 4432
@@mikapika2809 Its the Singer Heavy Duty 4432 I believe- I have the same one as well and its great.

LOVE your tutorials! How thorough you are speaking and demonstrating ALL the steps!!
❤Thank you for sharing this information ❤
Incredibly helpful actually
I’m glad!!
My button hole foot is one of my favorite machine gadgets.
Super helpful! I don't do button holes often, and haven't done them in YEARS... I have a newer machine now which is very different from my old machine, so I'm glad I found this video! 😊
THATS WHAT THAT FOOT DOES!!!
A tip for making the actual opening is to place a pin at the end so you don't rip through the stitching, because it will go straight on through lol.
Best buttonhole tutorial I found, which is crazy! Because you literally did it in a short! 👏👏 Nice job, girlie ❤️
Finding your channel has been a god send. I was never formally taught how to use my machine (I basically read the manual and figured most of it out myself), and your videos have filled in what I couldn't figure out.

Just figured this out on my own last night😅
Thank you so much for sharing these tips, tricks, and tutorials! 😊💜
The only helpful thing I found😭😭💗💗💗
Thank you so much for this video. You saved my life!!!
Cant say it enough..wish I would have had a community of helpers when I began to sew
When I was learning to sew, all these buttonhole doodads either had not yet been invented or were not available to home semstresses. I had to learn to do it with just zigzag and a miniscule stitch length. All these tricks and tools make buttonholing look like a cinch!!

I also don’t use a special contraption to make button holes. Just mark and stitch. Sew lock stitches at each end. Cut out and you’re done.
I am getting a sewing machine just because you are such a good teacher.
I’ve been following you for a few days and learned so many tips!
You have great talent !
Is crazy how fast the machine finishes the buttonhole. For me, it takes me about 15 to 20 min for a buttonhole by hand.
Thank you !
Wow amazingly taught...Thank you so much!

Yes!! Working on that now! :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this ❤
That's just perfect. Could you do more videos pleas.
I just got this sewing machine for Christmas! Thank you!
Amazing! I've always tested to use this foot and finally had the opportunity to do it and executed it perfectly! Thank you!!
Yay! I’m glad this video helped! ♥️
Beautiful sewing room!
Your videos are extremely helpful for this newbie! Thanks!
Totally brilliant 👏👏👏 thank you
Love it... u make it sound so easy...
Plz make more shorts
I mean, my 1960s Pfaff, that I found a thrift store for 25 bucks, has a button for this :)
What a nifty trick. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve never done this yet but so glad this popped on my feed and we have the same machine wooo
Yay!! The heavy duty is the best!!

Thank you for making this video it was very helpful
Thank you for the demonstration ❤
Great tutorial 🎉
So interesting. I have never even thought of trying to create a button hole.
You made me see its not that tuff.
that’s what that thing is! I’ve finally figured it out! Thanks
DRINKING GAME!!! Every time she says "Buttonhole" we take a drink of our barely hot herbal tea!😅
Seriously, this is the best "Buttonhole" tutorial ever!!! Thank you!
This video saved my project, and probably the sewing machine, from the trash.
Once again thank you for sharing!
I think it's best to just check the manual for your sewing machine. How exactly to do something and the settings to use just depend on the model.
That is the fanciest damn sewing machine I have ever seen. I need to get one immediately
What brand of sewing machine are you using? I have a 1976 portable Husqvarna Viking. It has the button hole mechanism built in. No extra attachments.
Great stuff. Now I got 2 machines, one surger and one for embroidery. Got an automatic setting for button holes like that one. But my embroidery dewing maching is 45 years old. It was a professional machine at the time costing around 8000$ back then, in today's money.
You never hit a dozen, you good
Plus points for showing how the actual hole is ripped open
So clean thank you
Thank you that was really helpful
The best!!! thank you thank you!!
My Beinen 880 does the most amazing buttonholes. I was a bit nervous, it's not like this way. But so worth it.
I have button hole chisel, it’s super cute I find it better than the seam ripper
I want this machine so badly
I have this sewing machine. When I make buttonholes, I leave the thread ends long. Then, I use a hand sewing needle to pull the threads to the back side and tie them.
Great tip thank you, that’s also a stunning machine, would love one for myself 😅
i’ve seen that foot in my sewing machine but never knew what it was for until now! Haven’t needed to see a button on but good to know 😊
Does this machine support sewing the actual button? Or do you have to sew it by hand?
BIG THANKS 🙏🏾
This is just what I needed to understand how to do this! Thank you for sharing
Thank you very much ❤❤❤❤ really I was having a problem with it 😊😊😊😊
Annnnddd that's enough internet for me today. My mind is too far in the gutter for this... haha buttonhole.
It’s the worst word
Always wondered how the button hole was made!
Now ya know!! :)
That's what that symbol is for?! All this time I had been sewing my button holes by hand 😂...
Thanks for the tutorial!
Is the lever supposed to be attached to machine already? Or do I have to purchase one and attach it myself
Thanks so much why do we need to put the button in the machine at the top? If we don’t what happens?😊
I am saving this video as I have never been able to use this foot since I bought the sewing machine
So glad!!
SO THATS HOW YOU MAKE THE STITCH TURN AROUND
Thank you for the tips . Marking with tailor's chalk the buttonhole is genius. Placing the pin before opening is genius. Sorry for overuse of genius! 🤣🤣🤣
Ohhh that's how you use this thank you
By the last “buttonhole” everyone should be in a trance.
“Sorry for the amount of times I said‘buttonhole’” lmao😂
What kind of machine do you have? Ive been looking at the singers!
Thank so much for the tips!! I have the same machine and don’t know how to use the button hole maker!! Thanks!!
Thank u. Now I know how to use this one
I have the exact seeing machine. Best investment ever.
I swear the background lofi girl playlist brought back memories of my exams
Guys 😅 read your Manuel it says there the even have pictures some will not have that laver, I am not saying don’t watch what to do in a video but you divice may not have this
Yes, when all else fails, read the manual! 🤣
What sewing machine are you using?? I really need to a new one
It looks like the singer heavy duty, I have one and I love it!
So I’m extremely new to sewing f I’m sure I’m missing the obvious question I’m about to ask…what is the point of putting the button in the slot if the machine doesn’t stop on its own? Like I said I’m sure I’m missing the obvious but I’d appreciate any help I can get!
