  • Battery-powered sconces, does it get much better? I've wanted to improve the lighting in the current living room for some time now, but since we have a ton of renovations scheduled before getting to rewiring this floor, I was stoked to dream up these sconces using some LED strips!

How to make, or how I made, a pair sconces - no electrical required.
    Let’s get into it.
I started by squaring a roughly 2.5ft piece of 8/4 walnut
    Then, I ripped 2 1.5” wide pieces
And equally squared off the ends of each
To create a recess for the strip of LED lights that will illuminate the sconce, I measured and marked a half in space in the center of each piece.
Then, using the table saw with the blade height at 3/8th of an inch, I ripped the recess.
I used a chisel to clean up the blade marks.
To add some texture and cohesion with much of the rest of my Rocky Mountain Collection, i used the trim router to add a 45 degree bevel on all the 90 degree edges.
Pleased with the light fixture progress, I switched to the batter boxes that will also serve to anchor the sconces to the wall.
I cut 4x6” pieces from another cut of 8/4 walnut
Setting the blade height to just higher than depth of the battery boxes on the LED strips, and setting the fence to just wider than ¼” I cleared the center of the blocks.
I removed the remaining chips and used a chisel and plane to remove the saw marks
Then I set the table saw blade to cut a recess on the three side to facilitate a slide to cap the top and bottom of the battery boxes
I used the cross cut sled to then create the pieces to fit the recess
To allow the wire to cross from the battery box and light fixture, I marked the center of the box face, and used the bandsaw to cut a crease.
I placed the battery box and wire in place, then glued a fitted piece of walnut that would house the keyhole used to anchor the sconce to the wall.
So that I could access the battery boxes without removing the sconce from the wall, i cut a half inch pull for the bottom slides.
To piece the battery box and light fixture together, I cut yet another slot in the fixture with the table saw to perfectly fit the boxes.
And again used the chisel to clean the cut marks
Before sanding everything down, I added a slight chamfer to the boxes using a router.
After a finishing level sand down, I added the keyhole anchors recesses to the boxes
Then glued the boxes to the fixtures,
Before using a semi gloss polyurethane to finish the walnut.
Once the finish dried, i cut the LED strips to size using the provided cut marks and used the self adhesive to place them
Then, all that was left to do was simply install the sconces in their new home.
    And that’s a wrap
