@@robcallaghan738 If the pre 1997 system had continued in the All Ireland hurling championships all the way to now Galway might never have joined The Leinster Hurling Championship or there Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard or Joe McDonagh cups might never have happened Ulster hurling championship winning team would still be playing in All Ireland hurling semi finals of course.
Martin Walsh Yes. It was funny how Galway would never get the chance of an easy semi final v Ulster , I was always Munster or Leinster who played them!! Galway I remember best Cork in the semifinals in 1985 .. wet wet day, my first memory of Galway hurling !!! I’m still scratching my head over Galway v Tipp in the 89 semifinal !!!
Disastrous. Embarrassing. Poor shooting, bad luck, an enormous gulf between Kilkeeny and Galway at that time, poor belief in themselves in this game and in 1981 over confidence. A surprise they won in 1980 because it did absolutely nothing to stabilize the irregular performances of 81 85 and 86.
That was the 1st of 3 All Ireland hurling finals in a row with Galway won in 1980 lost in 1979 & 1981.
‘85 v Offaly ‘86 v Cork ‘90 v Cork 93’ v Kilkenny 01’ v Tipperary, .. Hard days .. but got there a few times after and inbetween

The days when Galway only had to win two matches to win an all Ireland and could rarely do it
Very poor Kilkenny team. Shinnors had nightmares for years afterwards, basically scoring two own-goals.
Galway have a terrible record in hurling finals
I might as well mention mayo in the football
at least one can console the other in times of defeat.
