- In the 1960s, gambling in Britain suddenly got glamorous. James Bond helped make casinos cool. But, there was a real-life king of high-society gambling, a man called John Aspinall.

its not gambling. its a system; based on the odds; that relentlessly takes a percentage off the punter. your chances of a big win; about zero.

Card games are for mugs because you are fighting chance, but certain gambling scenarios such as horse racing can be very lucrative if you put the work in and study the cards and form back to front. I did really well betting american claiming horse races, smaller fields but high odds and simple oval tracks, and if you really study the form you can pick a winner from a mile off, so much so that on one occasion i lumped £500 on a horse and won £4500 profit (9/1), and believe me i am not a high stakes gambler, more a £10 bet at the best of times, but claiming races and devotion to studying the information fills you with huge confidence to win. On the flip side i NEVER bet UK horse racing, in that respect i agree with you, total mugs game, too many horses, patheticly low odds and filled with corruption and fixing. In the claiming races there is no benefit to be had from tampering because the horses are changing hands so it's always a fair race.
Fascinating documentary! Aspinall just provided entertainment. His clients had big egos, and were very vain. I don't feel sorry for them. Their fortunes often were stolen or robbed from other countries or peoples anyway. And with such major character flaws one could argue that they deserved to lose everything.
