- This Abu Ambassadeur reel came in the shop with a few issues. This video show the diagnostic process I use to determine why the reel has failed and how to solve the issues.

Great Video my Friend, I have an Old 5500 Ambassadeur Pro Max that’s spinning rough lol but it gave me 20 years of great service and my Largest Channel Cat from the New River, well 16 pounds so Huge to me.
That is awesome! The rough ride is probably gear wear over time - Thanks - Dennis
Excellent job. Good to know that brake placement needs to be checked prior to reassembly. That will help on my two 5500’s.
It is an easy mistake to make - Checking helps avoid the issue - Dennis
Interesting episode. I have become a big fan of the channel. I ran into an issue today at at estate sale. Very nice Bass Pro brand baitcaster and everything seemed to work nicely, except the drag was locked up tight. I reduced the tension all the way, but still could not get the spool to turn against the drag. Obviously, not a place where I could dig into the reel to try to assess the problem, so I passed on it. I there a quick check I could have done to assess whether this could be easily fixed?
Not really. You did the right thing in passing on it. It could have been a quick fix, but if parts were needed, you would be out of luck
A couple of tips, if I might be so bold.
1. Before taking anything apart, cut a strip of kitchen cling film and wrap it over the line on the spool.
2. With those tiny circlips (C-clips or whatever you call them), trying to force them off using a screwdriver at the pointed ends is a great way to cut your fingers and launch that clip into oblivion. A better way, IMHO, is to insert a small, flat screwdriver blade squarely into the gap at the midpoint of the clip and gently rotate the screwdriver. That way you can wrap your finger around the blade and feel the clip moving out - no explosive tension or punctured fingers.
I always appreciate the tips. Thanks for sharing - Dennis
I've got an Abu Garcia 6501 C3 that randomly goes into free-spool when fighting larger fish. I've had it happen at least 5 times in the past couple months. 3 times while fighting a 24lb halibut, and twice while fighting a 5' Soupfin Shark. The second time it happened while fighting the shark, the line wrapped around the free-spool button - glad the fish was running out of gas! Any ideas what would cause the reel to randomly go free-spool while under load?
My first thought is a weak yoke spring - That spring keeps tension on the pinion gear, which engages with the spool to hold it firm. It may be that you are pushing the limits of the reel beyond what it has been designed to handle - Of course, if the free spool release button gets bumped during the fight, that would cause the same issue - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m definitely not bumping the release button, and it only happens when fighting larger fish, so I guess I’m just trying to push the reel beyond its limits. I’ve had this reel for about 15 or 20 years, and it never happened prior to this summer. But if the springs are getting weak, then I guess it’s time for some repair or replacement.
