In this episode our crews recorded the entire trip of Orange County Transportation Authority final premium intercounty express line, route 794 from the first stop in Costa Mesa to the last stop at La Sierra neighborhood of Riverside.
OCTA Route 794 is Monday thru Friday AM/PM rush hour only bus service, with five afternoon trips departing Costa Mesa, and six morning trips departing La Sierra Metrolink Station in Riverside.
In the 1960s this route was originally known as line 59, which traveled from Long Beach through Orange County on its way to Riverside proper (SCRTD, 1965), in the 1970s it was known as line 860 (SCRTD, 1979), and was operated by the Southern California Rapid Transit District (RTD). In 1983, RTD introduced a new, substantial renumbering system of all bus lines, while keeping an earlier grid system pattern and soon after Line 860 became Line 149 (SCRTD, 2013).
The District faced projections of system-wide reductions in service due to decreasing of funding from federal and state. The District planned to close division 16 in Pomona which Line 149 was based at, downsizing of division 6 in Venice was ongoing, and smaller lines were taken over by LADOT (Miller, 1988).
Line 149 was canceled when the counties of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino created the Inland Empire Connection (IEC) in 1990 (Novak, 2014). The new IEC Route 149 operated alongside the former RTD route from the Mall of Orange in Orange County to downtown Riverside by way of the 91 Freeway (RTA, 1995; Novak, 2014), the western and some eastern portions of the former line was assumed by OCTD, a predecessor agency to present day OCTA and to the Riverside Transit Agency (RTA). For OCTA, portions of the former line evolved into a premium express route between Costa Mesa and Riverside (OCTA, 2019). Route 794 is a remnant of the eastern portion of Line 149 (SCRTD, 1984).
There will be continuous video coverage from Hyland/Scenic Avenues in Costa Mesa to La Sierra Metrolink Station in Riverside. We hope you enjoy this ride along on OCTA's most distant eastbound intercounty express route. The featured vehicle in this episode is a New Flyer C40LFR - Suburban class (CPTDB, 2019). These are scenes of that afternoon.
