Yay, they're shutting down the power. Can't wait to move on to an intermittent power source.

Doesn't bother me I went 100% solar battery. Not because I support the solar energy because it was $15,000 cheaper to put on my property than hooking up to the mains. No more quarterly bills no more being held to ransom for price gouging.

It's like being on a 'metaphorical' coal fired plane and they shut down the engines 10 miles from the runway hoping the plane will make with battery power that hasn't been installed yet.

Usually after a power plant breaks even in terms of investment and revenue (maybe 20 years after starting operation), you are running it on pure profit. Not sure what the case is here... Just that it is shutting down, no reasons given.

Owners described it as not viable in 2013, announced this closure in 2015 and in 2018. AGL has cited cost of ongoing maintenance as the primary factor in stating that it was "not viable".

Where are all the renewables in place, up and running reliably after its 3 month trial, then a gradual shutdown to ensure the original stable base load is maintained

It is claimed that the Liddell power plant is being replaced by a giant battery with a capacity of 500 MW. The numbers don’t add up. Liddell has a capacity of 2,000 MW.
The giant battery will be charged using wind and solar when it’s windy and sunny. On a windless night (12 hrs) it will have an output of 500 MWh.
Liddell, on a windless night (12 hrs) had an output of 24,000 MWh.
    Liddell is not being replaced.

Liddell hasnt operated at full capacity for years. Last year it averaged 800MW. It had to restart a turbine every couple of weeks and was only available 5% of the time for peak demand. If you look at current demand trends on the grid, renewables are cutting heavily into daytime grid demand in particular. This used to be when coal plants made most of their money. Records are being set each year for minimum daytime demand. The battery is aiming to get through the early evening peak when demand is tightest. For the rest of the time there is plenty of alternative forms of generation. On a windless night, power consumption drops right away so it is not a concern. Even if Liddell could output 24,000 MWh (which it was no longer capable of) the power would not be needed because the demand is not there as people sleep
