    From USA:Texas. Usually one syllable: Skwirl. My Iowa family uses two syllables, just as you demonstrate.

    In American English we don't even use 2 syllables. It's just "skwirl" like "swirl".
    I don't know which acedemic circles that 2 syllable "skwur-rul" came from, but it's not used in common speech. (Unless I'm just speaking for the Mid-Atlantic 🤔)

      In both British and American English this word has two syllables. However, there might be a tendency to drop the last and reduced syllable. In the same way we can say either chocolate or choc-late. Academics do not decide on how we pronounce English, unlike most languages. Thank you for the comment, which adds light on dropping reduced syllables.

      @@EnglishwithJoe That's so weird. I feel like if I said "skwur-rul" I'd get stared at for a full minute before they ask if I'm having a stroke 😅
      I could probably get away with saying chaw-ka-let, tho.

      Also from the mid-atlantic, but yes, I pronounce it as one syllable.

      Ya man. Scwerl or skwurl something like that. One syllable in common spoken English for sure. I'm from California but haven't noticed friends from the east coast doing it different. I don't care what the dictionary says and I'm an insufferable pedant who protested adding a new definition to "decimate".

    Does the British pronunciation of Squirt sound more like the American Squirrel or squid?

    • @EnglishwithJoe
      @EnglishwithJoe  3 года назад +1

      Yes, it does! Absolutely. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. Both British and American pronunciation of 'squirt' are pronounced /skwɝːt/, and the American pron of 'squirrel' is /ˈskwɝː.əl/. Nice tip!

    I apologize for those grey squirrels. The red ones are so much cuter. I would also say that in the US it comes out as almost as one syllable, albeit a very long one. Great vid.

      I believe it was a Victorian gentlemen who released some American greys into an English park for the bemusement of his friends, so we can only blame ourselves for that ecological disaster! I have never seen a red squirrel in the UK and I grew up in London. Cheers for the comment!
